Joseph Lual Acuil

Minister Joseph Lual Acuil Lual, (born 1948) also written as Joseph Lual Achuil, is a South Sudanese politician and civil servant, and the father of the Melbourne United basketball player Jo Lual-Acuil. [1]

Background

Joseph Lual is born in 1948 near Kuajok, where he completed primary school in 1957. He attended secondary school at Ricks Institute in Liberia and received in 1973 a degree in Business Administration at the University of Liberia. [2] From 1973 to 1978 Mr. Lual was a teacher at Ricks Institute, after which he joined the Liberian Ministry of Finance as a senior tax officer.

Early 1980s he returned to Sudan and worked for the Bahr el Ghazal state administration till 1989. In the following ten years Mr Lual worked for the Sudanese Red Crescent Society and the administrations of Gogrial province and Warrap State. In 1999 he joined the World Food Programme (WFP) in South Sudan, where he was a senior national officer till June 2010, when he was appointed National Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management based in Khartoum for the Republic of Sudan. [3] After Independence of South Sudan he joined the South Sudanese government in the same role as Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Disaster Management till 23 July 2013, when President Salva Kiir relieved all ministers and re-configured the ministries. [4] In May 2015 Joseph Lual Acuil was appointed by President Salva Kiir as Head of the National Communications Authority. [5]

Kuol Manyang is a South Sudanese politician. He is a member of the SPLM. He became governor of Jonglei state on 15 December 2007, following the first former governor, Philip Thon Leek from Dinka Bor, to curb cattle raiding and abduction of children in the region.

Nhial Deng Nhial

Lieutenant General Nhial Deng Nhial is a South Sudanese politician and a member of the ruling Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM). He was Minister of Foreign Affairs 2011 to 2013 and 2018 to 2019 after having served as the caretaker Minister of Defense since 10 July 2011. Prior to that he served as the pre-independence South Sudanese Minister of SPLA and Veteran Affairs, from 22 December 2008 until 9 July 2011.

South Sudan Peoples Defence Forces

The South Sudan People's Defence Forces (SSPDF), formerly the Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), is the army of the Republic of South Sudan. The SPLA was founded as a guerrilla movement against the government of Sudan in 1983 and was a key participant of the Second Sudanese Civil War, led by John Garang. After Garang's death in 2005, Salva Kiir was named the SPLA's new Commander-in-Chief. As of 2010, the SPLA was divided into divisions of 10,000–14,000 soldiers.

The Bank of South Sudan is the central bank of the Republic of South Sudan. Established in July 2011, by an Act of Parliament, it replaced the now defunct Bank of Southern Sudan, a branch of the Bank of Sudan, which had served as the central bank of Southern Sudan, during the period between February 2005 until July 2011. The bank is fully owned by the Government of South Sudan.

South Sudanese Civil War

The South Sudanese Civil War was a conflict in South Sudan between forces of the government and opposition forces. In December 2013, President Kiir accused his former deputy Riek Machar and ten others of attempting a coup d'état. Machar denied trying to start a coup and fled to lead the SPLM – in opposition (SPLM-IO). Fighting broke out between the Sudan People's Liberation Movement (SPLM) and SPLM-IO, igniting the civil war. Ugandan troops were deployed to fight alongside the South Sudanese government. The United Nations has peacekeepers in the country as part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).

Joseph Lual-Acuil Jr. is a South Sudanese Australian professional basketball player for Melbourne United of the National Basketball League (NBL). He played college basketball for Neosho County Community College and Baylor University.
