The music of Malawi has historically been influenced by its triple cultural heritage of British, African, and American music. Malawians, known for their history as travellers and migrant workers, have contributed to the spread of their music across the African continent, blending it with various musical forms. A significant factor in this musical amalgamation was World War II, during which soldiers transported music to distant lands and brought it back, leading to the popularity of guitar and banjo duos as dance bands by the war's end. Both instruments were imported. Additionally, Malawians working in mines in South Africa and Mozambique influenced the fusion of music styles, giving rise to genres such as Kwela.
John Zenus Ungapake Tembo was a Malawian politician who served for years as President of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP). Tembo comes from the Dedza District in central Malawi, and he was a teacher by profession. Beginning in the 1960s he was an important politician in Malawi, and he was a key figure in the regime of Hastings Banda (1964–1994). He has been variously described as "physically slight, ascetic, fastidious" and "cunning". He was replaced as President of the MCP in August 2013.

He has been voted as Malawi’s best rapper twice Joy FM fans and in 2021 was crowned King of Malawian Hiphop by the audience of one of Malawi's biggest online platforms, Mikozi Networks. He was introduced to Malawian audiences under Rush records with the single “I’m Home” and his popularity grew to solidify his place as one of Malawi's greatest hip-hop artists. He has had subsequent hits since then. His song “zipepese” number 2 on FM 101 Power’s urban music chart. In 2010 he collaborated with Malawian born rising act Onesimus Muzik on a track titled "Beautiful" He also collaborated with Lucius Banda, Tigris, and Maskal on track "Malawi Goodlife" in 2011.

Kelvin Khuzumba popularly known as Nesnes is a Malawian rnb artist and songwriter. He became popular after releasing songs such as Chidodo and It’s not fair in early 2010s which saw success in Malawi selling 60 copies in a single week. He featured Conel Chyoon and Lap T in the album which has songs like Chibwelele, Kadya Ubwelele, Sionse, Ndinjoye and Mundilanditse.
Lawrence Mbenjere is a Malawian musician, songwriter, composer and producer. His breakthrough came in the late 1990s with his band Machuluka Sounds, gaining recognition for their unique fusion of traditional Malawian rhythms with modern influences. He came into public in 2005 with his debut album Ndimasilira, which had a hit Chiphaso (passport).
Sir Paul Banda is a Malawian musician, songwriter, producer and videographer. In 2023, Banda received a lifetime award. He is a member of the Malawian pop group called the Alleluya Band, which he founded in the 1970s. He is regarded as the founder of modern Malawi music. During his time in early 2000s and 1990s, he taught different artists to sing. These artists include Malume Bokosi, Lucius Banda, Paul Chaphuka and many more. He is the older brother of Lucius Banda.
Alleluya Band is an oldest Malawian music group founded by Paul Banda his brother Lucius Banda from Balaka. The band started and rose to fame in 1970s. The band's current leader is Coss Chiwalo. In 2021, the group released their 13th album in May. In 2018 and 2019, the band visited Rome and met with Pope Francis for Panama for World Youth Day. In 2020, after the band embarked from Italy, they were quarantined due to Covid-19. The band has also shared stage with different artists such as Skeffa Chimoto and Dan Lufani.
Mizaya Princess Chitsulo, best known as Princess Chitsulo, is a Malawian gospel singer, activist and businesswoman. In 2001, she was honored an award for Best Female Vocalist in the Malawi Gin Competition. In 2014, she also got awarded as best female artist and her song titled Ndidzayimba Nyimbo was voted as the best song of the year.
Grace Chinga Moffat or simply Grace Chinga, was a Malawian gospel singer, songwriter and vocalist. She released her debut studio album titled Uleke (Stop) in 2004 that had a hit song titled Thandizo Langa which made her gain national recognition. In 2009, Chinga released her third studio album titled Udzayimba Nyimbo before releasing the fourth studio album titled Esther in 2016.
Chiku Malinga Chitsundi Banda, best known as Malinga Mafia, is a Malawian dancehall artist and songwriter. In 2018, he won a Nyasa Music Award as Best Dancehall artist of the year. His collaboration with Hyphen titled Tsidya lina won the Best collaboration of the year 2018. In 2017, he won the Best Music Video in Nyasa Music Awards. In 2016, he was awarded a UMP Award for Album of the Year as well as Best Reggae/Dancehall Act in years 2017 and 2018.

The annual presentation event that takes place in major cities of the country features performances by artists and they are one of the major Malawi's music industry awards. The event recognizes Malawian music from all genres, including traditional, soul, and gospel. The awards also promote culture, with the 2017 event host of an African Print party that encourages people to showcase their traditional outfits. The awards include media sister awards and its categories are split into male and female.

Lloyd Phiri is a Malawian gospel musician and praise and worship leader. He released his debut album "Sachedwa Safulumira" in 2013, containing 10 tracks which received positive reviews and established him as a rising star in the Malawian gospel music scene. He has since released several successful albums and singles, including "Mundikondane", "Mwalaika", and "Ndilibe ".
Geoffrey Zigoma was a Malawian gospel musician and songwriter. He was the first to break local music sales’ record by selling over 100,000 copies in Malawi, but was later surpassed by Mlaka Maliro’s Dzanja Lalemba which sold over 131,000 copies in four months. He was also an outspoken advocate for albinos in Malawi and faced discrimination. His last album, Ndathera mwa Yesu, features songs that talk about his battle against skin cancer.
