Joshua Staples (born 2004) is an Australian competitive swimmer. He is the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific champion in the 400-metre freestyle, 800-metre freestyle, 1500-metre freestyle, and 4×200-metre freestyle relay. In 2022, he was part of a first sweep of all men's individual freestyle events at a single Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships by Australian swimmers, winning three of the six gold medals with Flynn Southam winning the other three.
Staples was born in Casuarina, Northern Territory, where he trained under the guidance of Peter Brasher as part of the Casuarina Storm Swimming Club. [2] He currently trains with the St Peters Western swim club, where he is coached by Dean Boxall. [1]
After being named to the 2021 Australian World Junior Team, Staples took part in a training camp, held in Darwin before the 2021 Australian Swimming Championships, as one of two contingents, the other including senior Australian swimmers Kyle Chalmers and Travis Mahoney. [1] The following year, he won the bronze medal in the 800-metre freestyle at the 2022 Australian Swimming Championships, held in Adelaide in May, with a time of 7:58.26. [3] He also placed fifth in the 400-metre freestyle with a 3:50.07, fifth in the 1500-metre freestyle with a 15:23.55, and eighth in the 400-metre individual medley with a 4:26.24. [4] Based on his results, he was named to the Australia roster for the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. [5]

Day one of competition at the Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Honolulu, United States, for the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships in August, Staples won the gold medal in the 1500-metre freestyle with a personal best time of 15:18.54, earning nine points for Australia. [6] [7] The following day, he placed eighth in the 400-metre individual medley, finishing in a time of 4:29.97 and scoring one point for Australia. [6] Later in the same finals session, he helped win the gold medal in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay in a Championships record time of 7:13.07, contributing a time of 1:47.84 for the fourth leg of the relay in the final. [6] [8] In the 400-metre freestyle on day three, he won the gold medal in a personal best and Championships record time of 3:48.36, lowering the record over two full seconds from the 3:50.51 it was set at in 2010 by Nicholas Caldwell of the United States, and achieved nine points for Australia. [9] [10] For the 4×100-metre freestyle relay later in the same session, he split a 50.79 for the anchor leg of the relay, helping finish second in a time of 3:21.42 swimming exhibition. [6]
The fourth and final day of competition, Staples won the gold medal in the 800-metre freestyle with a personal best time of 7:56.29, which was just 1.13 seconds off the Championships record of 7:55.16 set by Robert Finke of the United States in 2016 and earned nine additional points for Australia. [6] [11] Between his three gold medals in his individual freestyle events and the three gold medals won by fellow Australian Flynn Southam in the 50-metre freestyle, 100-metre freestyle, and 200-metre freestyle, the 2022 Championships marked the first time swimmers representing Australia won all possible gold medals in the men's individual freestyle events at a single Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships. [11] When points were summed for each athlete across their individual events, he was the highest scoring male competitor with 28 points, which was five points lower than the highest scoring female competitor Erin Gemmell of the United States. [12]
On the first day of the 2023 Australian Swimming Championships, in April in Gold Coast, Queensland, Staples ranked fourth in the preliminaries of the 400-metre freestyle with a 3:52.90 and qualified for the evening final, where he placed sixth in a time of 3:52.43 that was 0.05 seconds ahead of seventh-place finisher Mack Horton. For the second day, he placed second in the age final of the 200-metre freestyle with a 1:50.48 before placing sixth in the 1500-metre freestyle with a 15:44.96. On the third evening, he placed fifth in the 200-metre individual medley with a personal best time of 2:02.44 and sixth in the 800-metre freestyle with a 8:09.43. The fourth day, he improved upon his eighth-place finish in the 400-metre individual medley from the same competition in 2022, this time placing seventh with a 4:25.75. [13]
In June, at the 2023 Australian Swimming Trials in Melbourne, Staples placed seventeenth in the 400-metre freestyle on day one with a 3:57.40, fifty-second in the 200-metre freestyle on day two with a 1:57.07, and eighth in the 800-metre freestyle on day three with a 8:06.11. [14]

Nicholas David Ffrost is an Australian freestyle swimmer and relay veteran who has contributed to the Australian 4×200-metre freestyle relay to capture 8 international medals. He was an Australian Institute of Sport scholarship holder. Ffrost's first international meet was the 2006 Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Ffrost competed in the 4×200-metre freestyle relay. He swam the first leg in the final to help Australia win the bronze medal. He went on to make the final in the individual 200-metre freestyle, finishing 8th place. He placed 11th in the 400-metre freestyle semi-finals, but did not advance to the finals.
Blair Catherine Evans is an Australian middle distance freestyle swimmer.
Kathleen Genevieve Ledecky is an American competitive swimmer. She has won seven Olympic gold medals and 19 world championship gold medals, the most in history for a female swimmer. Ledecky's six individual gold medals at the Olympics, 14 individual gold medals at the World Aquatics Championships, and 22 overall medals at the World Aquatics Championships are records in women's swimming. Ledecky is the world record holder in the women's 800- and 1500-meter freestyle as well as the former world record holder in the women's 400-meter freestyle. She also holds the fastest-ever times in the women's 500-, 1000-, and 1650-yard freestyle events. She is widely regarded as one of the greatest Olympians and the greatest female swimmer of all time.
Mackenzie James Horton is an Australian freestyle swimmer. He is an Olympic gold medallist, World Championships medallist, and Commonwealth Games medallist. At the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, he finished first in the 400m freestyle, winning his first gold medal and became the first male swimmer from the state of Victoria to do so in the Games' history.

Andrew Hammond Seliskar is a retired American competitive swimmer. He won the gold medal in the 200 meter butterfly at the 2013 FINA World Junior Swimming Championships in Dubai, breaking the Championships record.
Ariarne Elizabeth Titmus, is an Australian swimmer. She is the reigning Olympic champion in the women's 200-metre and 400-metre freestyle, having won both events at the 2020 Summer Olympics, and the former world record holder in the long course and short course 400-metre freestyle events. In 2019 and 2020, she competed representing the Cali Condors in the International Swimming League.
Sean Grieshop is an American competitive swimmer. Grieshop swam for Nitro Swimming in Texas, and after setting numerous National Age Group records, he now swims for the University of California Berkeley Golden Bears. At the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships, he won the bronze medal in the 1500 meter freestyle with a time of 15:29.87. While competing at the 2015 World Junior Championships, he set his first Junior World Record in the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay with teammates Grant Shoults, Maxime Rooney, and Grant House. At the same meet, he won the gold medal in the 400m individual medley as well as bronze in the 200m individual medley.
Brendon Smith is an Australian swimmer. He won the bronze medal in the 400 metre individual medley at the 2020 Summer Olympics and has competed in the Summer Universiade and the 2021 Australian Swimming Trials.
Matthew "Matt" Sates is a South African swimmer. He is the African record holder in the short course 200 metre freestyle, 400 metre freestyle, and 200 metre individual medley as well as the South African record holder in the 400 metre individual medley. He is the 2022 World Short Course champion in the 200 metre individual medley and bronze medalist in the 400 metre individual medley. At the 2022 NCAA Division I Championships, he won the NCAA title in the 500 yard freestyle. For the 2021 FINA Swimming World Cup, he was the overall male winner, earning a total of 18 medals, including 13 gold medals.
Lani Pallister is an Australian competitive swimmer. She is a world record holder in two sports, with a world record in swimming, the short course 4×200-metre freestyle relay, and world records in life saving for the youth age group in the 100-metre rescue medley and 200-metre super lifesaver. She holds the Oceanian, Commonwealth, and Australian records in the short course 1500-metre freestyle and the Australian record in the short course 800-metre freestyle. She is the first female World Short Course champion in the 1500-metre freestyle, winning the inaugural event for women at the 2022 edition. The 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Swimming Championships were held from 24 to 27 August 2022 at Veterans Memorial Aquatic Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, United States. Competition was conducted in a long course pool. Swimmers between the ages of 13 and 18 competed. Each country was allowed to enter more than two swimmers per event, however only the two fastest swimmers per country in the preliminary heats of each event were eligible for medals. Events were contested in a heats and finals format.
Flynn Southam is an Australian swimmer. At the 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships, he won gold medals in the 50 metre freestyle, 100 metre freestyle, and 200 metre freestyle. Thomas Heilman is an American competitive swimmer. He is a world junior record holder in the long course 4×100 meter freestyle relay. He is also a 2022 Junior Pan Pacific Championships gold medalist in the 100 meter butterfly, 4×100 meter freestyle relay, and 4×100 meter medley relay, and a silver medalist in the 100 meter freestyle, 200 meter butterfly, and 4×200 meter freestyle relay.
Erin Gemmell is an American competitive swimmer. She is an American record holder in the short course 4×200 meter freestyle relay.
