Josiah Schakel (born January 19, 1999) is a Canadian professional football linebacker for the Edmonton Elks of the Canadian Football League (CFL). He played U Sports football at Alberta. He has also been a member of the Calgary Stampeders.
Schakel played high school football at Bev Facey Community High School in Sherwood Park, Alberta. [1]
Schakel played U Sports football at Alberta. He won the Presidents' Trophy in 2021 as the top U Sports defensive player. [2] [3]
Schakel was selected by the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League (CFL) in the second round, with the 14th overall pick, of the 2022 CFL Draft. [4] [5] He signed with the team on May 9, 2022. He was placed on injured reserve several times during the 2022 season. [6] Overall, Schakel dressed in seven games in 2022, and made one tackle on defense. [7] [8] He was released on June 3, 2023. [9]
Schakel was signed to the practice roster of the Edmonton Elks of the CFL on June 26, 2023. He was moved to the active roster on June 28, 2023. [10] He dressed for 15 games in 2023, recording 14 special teams tackles. [8] [7] Schakel re-signed with the team on December 1, 2023. [11] [12]
