José Augusto Teixeira da Silva (born 24 February 1961) has been a member of the First Quorum of the Seventy of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church) since 2008. Teixeira is the first Portuguese general authority in LDS Church history.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints nontrinitarian Christian restorationist church

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, often informally known as the LDS Church or Mormon Church, is a nontrinitarian, Christian restorationist church that is considered by its members to be the restoration of the original church founded by Jesus Christ. The church is headquartered in Salt Lake City, Utah in the United States, and has established congregations and built temples worldwide. According to the church, it has over 16 million members and 67,000 full-time volunteer missionaries. In 2012, the National Council of Churches ranked the church as the fourth-largest Christian denomination in the United States, with over 6.5 million members reported by the church, as of January 2018. It is the largest denomination in the Latter Day Saint movement founded by Joseph Smith during the period of religious revival known as the Second Great Awakening.

A general authority's jurisdiction is church-wide, in contrast to the responsibilities of a local authority or an area authority, which relate to a particular area, unit, or department of the church. As a group, the general authorities are often referred to as "the Brethren". As of October 2017, there are 109 general authorities.

Early life, education, career, and family

Teixeira was born in Vila Real, Portugal. The LDS Church was not organized in Portugal until 1974, 14 years after Teixeira was born.

As a young man, Teixeira served as a missionary in the LDS Church's Portugal Lisbon Mission. He received a degree in accounting from Jaime Cortesao Technical School and a degree in business management from IAT-Technical Improvement Institute.

A mission of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a geographical administrative area to which church missionaries are assigned. Almost all areas of the world are within the boundaries of an LDS Church mission, whether or not Mormon missionaries live or proselytize in the area. As of July 2018, there were 407 missions of the LDS Church. On January 2, 2019, the LDS Church announced changes that will close 12 missions through boundary realignments and open up 4 new ones, effective July 1, 2019. When these changes take place, there will be 399 missions of the church.

Accounting or accountancy is the measurement, processing, and communication of financial information about economic entities such as businesses and corporations. The modern field was established by the Italian mathematician Luca Pacioli in 1494. Accounting, which has been called the "language of business", measures the results of an organization's economic activities and conveys this information to a variety of users, including investors, creditors, management, and regulators. Practitioners of accounting are known as accountants. The terms "accounting" and "financial reporting" are often used as synonyms.

Teixeira's career included employment as an international controller for the LDS Church in Frankfurt, Germany, where he oversaw church finances in Europe and Africa. He was the regional manager of the church's area office based in Portugal.

Teixeira and his wife, Maria Filomena Lopes Teles Grilo, were married in the Bern Switzerland Temple in 1984 and they are the parents of three children. [2]

Bern Switzerland Temple

The Bern Switzerland Temple is a temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Though the building is located in Münchenbuchsee, its postal address is assigned to the neighboring municipality of Zollikofen. It was the first LDS temple to be built in Europe and the first to be built outside of the United States and Canada.

LDS Church service

Teixeira has served in the church as a district president, bishop's counselor, high councilor, and counselor in a stake presidency. Teixeira was president of the Lisbon Portugal Oeiras Stake from 1994 to 1996 and an area seventy from 1996 [3] to 2005. He served as president of the Brazil São Paulo South Mission from 2005 to 2008. Bishop is the highest priesthood office of the Aaronic priesthood in the Latter Day Saint movement. It is almost always held by one who already holds the Melchizedek priesthood office of high priest. The Latter Day Saint concept of the office differs significantly from the role of bishops in other Christian denominations, being in some respects more analogous to a pastor or parish priest. Each bishop serves with two counselors, which together form a bishopric.

A stake is an administrative unit composed of multiple congregations in certain denominations of the Latter Day Saint movement. The name "stake" derives from the Book of Isaiah: "enlarge the place of thy tent; stretch forth the curtains of thine habitation; spare not, lengthen thy cords, and strengthen thy stakes". A stake is sometimes referred to as a stake of Zion.

Mission president

Mission president is a priesthood leadership position in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. A mission president presides over a mission and the missionaries serving in the mission. Depending on the particular mission, a mission president may also be the presiding priesthood leader of some or all Latter-day Saints within the geographic boundaries of the mission. Mission presidents are ordained high priests of the church.

At the church's general conference in April 2008, Teixeira was accepted by church membership as a general authority and member of the First Quorum of the Seventy. [5] He served as a counselor in the presidency of the church's Europe Area from 2009 to 2012 and subsequently as president of the area from August 2012 to August 2015. In August 2015, he became a counselor in the South America South Area [6] and then became the area's president in August 2016. [7]

On 31 March 2018, as part of the church's general conference, it was announced that Teixeira would become a member of the Presidency of the Seventy, effective 1 August 2018. [8]
