Joy Marie Burch is an Australian politician and the current Speaker of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. She has been a Labor Party member for the seat of Brindabella in the ACT Legislative Assembly since the 2008 ACT election.
Prior to being elected to the Legislative Assembly,Burch was a registered nurse. She worked for several years as a community nurse across southern NSW and the ACT.
Burch lived for several years in Alice Springs,as the Executive Director of the Australian Rural Health Education Network,as Executive Director of the Northern Territory Remote Workforce Agency and as the CEO of the Rural Health and Community Support Services. She also was the owner and operator of a Childcare Centre.
Burch has formal tertiary education,with a Bachelor of Arts in Liberal Studies,and Post-Graduate qualifications in Health Administration and Information Systems Management.
Burch is married with three sons and lives in Tuggeranong. Her hobbies include spending time with her family,community events and volunteering,swimming,gardening,walking,reading,and listening to music. [1]
Burch was first elected to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly in the Brindabella electorate at the 2008 election. [2] [3] Upon entering the Assembly,Burch was appointed Government Whip,Assistant Speaker and ALP Caucus Secretary. [1]
A year later,Burch was appointed to Cabinet. Over the next seven years,she held a number of Ministerial positions,including: [1]
She was re-elected at the 2012 election. [4]
Burch faced controversy when it was alleged that her chief of staff briefed the Construction,Forestry,Maritime,Mining and Energy Union (CFMEU) on matters regarding ACT Policing which are still under investigation. [5] [6] She resigned as Minister for Police and Emergency Services in December 2015 before resigning from all other ministerial positions a month later in January 2016. She then became Deputy Speaker and Government Whip.
Burch was again re-elected at the 2016 election,and was subsequently elected Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly. [7] and she was elected Speaker of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. [8]
Burch was again re-elected at the 2020 Australian Capital Territory general election,receiving the highest vote of any candidate in the Brindabella Electorate,and obtaining a significant swing towards her. She was re-elected Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly for the tenth parliament.

The Brindabella electorate is one of the five electorates for the unicameral 25-member Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. It elects five members,and is the largest of the electorates in geographic area.
Elections to the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly were held on Saturday,18 October 2008. The incumbent Labor Party,led by Jon Stanhope,was challenged by the Liberal Party,led by Zed Seselja. Candidates were elected to fill three multi-member electorates using a single transferable vote method,known as the Hare-Clark system. The result was another hung parliament with Labor winning seven seats,the Liberals six seats and the Greens finishing with four seats,giving the Greens the balance of power in the 17-member unicameral Assembly. On 31 October 2008,after almost two weeks of deliberations,the Greens chose to support a Labor minority government. Consequently,Labor was re-elected to a third consecutive term of government in the ACT. Stanhope was elected Chief Minister at the first sitting of the seventh Assembly on 5 November 2008. The election was conducted by the ACT Electoral Commission.
Zdenko Matthew "Zed" Seselja is an Australian politician who was a Senator for the Australian Capital Territory from 2013 to 2022,representing the Liberal Party. He was the Minister for International Development and the Pacific in the Morrison government from December 2020 to May 2022,and previously served as an assistant minister in the Morrison and Turnbull governments since 2016.
Michael (Mick) David Gentleman is an Australian politician and is a member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Brindabella for the Labor Party. He was first elected to the assembly in 2004,but lost his seat in the 2008 election. He was re-elected to the assembly at the 2012 election,2016 election and 2020 election. Mick Gentleman has been a Minister in the ACT Government since 2014.
Shane Stephen Rattenbury,is the Attorney-General of the ACT and former Speaker of the ACT Legislative Assembly,and a member of the multi-member district unicameral Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly representing the electorate of Molonglo from 2008 to 2016 and the electorate of Kurrajong since 2016 for the ACT Greens. In December 2012,Doszpot was elected as the Assistant Speaker.

Yvette Simone Berry is an Australian politician and Deputy Chief Minister of the Australian Capital Territory. She has been a Labor Party member for the seat of Ginninderra in the ACT Legislative Assembly since the 2012 ACT election. Berry is the daughter of Wayne Berry who was a Member of the ACT Assembly for Ginninderra from 1989 to 2008,Deputy Chief Minister from 1991 to 1994,Opposition Leader from 1997 to 1998 and Speaker from 2001 to 2008. Berry is the first family member of a current or previous member to be elected to the ACT assembly.
Meegan Fitzharris is a former Australian politician,who was a member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly for the Yerrabi electorate from October 2016 to July 2019,and before that,member for the electorate of Molonglo after she won a countback to fill the Legislative Assembly seat vacated by former Chief Minister,Katy Gallagher,in January 2015. She was the Minister for Transport and Municipal Services,Minister for Higher Education,Training and Research and Minister for Health until her resignation from politics in July 2019.

Candice Burch is an Australian politician who was a Liberal member of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. Candice Burch is not to be confused with nor is biologically related to Joy Burch,who is another member of the ACT Legislative Assembly. Candice Burch was one of three Canberra Liberals who lost their seat in the 2020 ACT Election. Since losing her seat in the Assembly,Candice now works as Public Affairs and Communications Manager for the Pharmaceutical Society of Australia.
The First Barr Ministry was the 13th ministry of the Government of the Australian Capital Territory,and was led by Labor Chief Minister Andrew Barr and his deputy Yvette Berry. It was appointed on 15 December 2014 following the resignation of Katy Gallagher as Chief Minister and the subsequent election of Andrew Barr as her replacement by the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly. Green's Shane Rattenbury continued to serve as a minister for the remainder of the parliamentary term,as part of the Labor-Greens parliamentary agreement signed in 2012 at the start of the term.
