Juan Francisco Sandoval Alfaro (born 5 May 1982) is a Guatemalan attorney and prosecutor who served as Head of the Special Prosecutor's Office against Impunity from September 2015 to July 2021.
Sandoval was an ally of then-Attorney General Thelma Aldana in investigating cases against former presidents Alfonso Portillo,Álvaro Arzú,Álvaro Colom and Otto Pérez Molina,among other cases. [1] [2] After Aldana's mandate,Sandoval began investigations for possible corruption against former president Jimmy Morales [3] and Alejandro Giammattei. [4]
Sandoval maintained a strained relationship with Aldana's successor,María Consuelo Porras,who eventually ended up removing him in July 2021. [1] [5] According to the US State Department,Porras "actively undermined" the corruption investigations conducted by Sandoval and his team. About two months after her removal,the US Department of State included Porras on a list of "corrupt and undemocratic" officials. [6]

The International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala was an international body charged with investigating and prosecuting serious crime in Guatemala. On January 7,2019,the agreement between the United Nations and Guatemala was terminated by Guatemalan president Jimmy Morales,evoking CICIG's alleged participation in illegal acts,abuse of authority and acts against the constitution. The UN rejected this unilateral termination,and the country's highest law court ruled against the president's decision. CICIG's term was scheduled to end in September 2019. Morales' decision,approved by the country's business elite,triggered an institutional crisis in Guatemala,as the Constitutional court sided with CICIG. Morales is being investigated concerning his campaign financing.
Ingrid Roxana Baldetti Elías is a Guatemalan politician who served as the first female Vice President of Guatemala from 2012 until her resignation amid a corruption scandal in 2015. In 2018,she was sentenced to 15½years in prison for illicit association,fraud,and influence peddling,and to 16 years in 2022 for illicit association and customs fraud for her part in the La Linea corruption ring.
The La Línea corruption case began in Guatemala on April 16,2015 when the International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala and State prosecutors accused a number of politicians in the administration of President Otto Pérez Molina of setting up a customs corruption ring with the help of high-ranking officials in the tax and customs administration. Several demonstrations ensued,calling for the resignation of Pérez Molina and his vice-president Roxana Baldetti. Among the accused were the retired captain Juan Carlos Monzón,and the directors of the Tax Administration Superintendency or Superintendencia de Administración Tributaria,(SAT),an entity analogous to the US Internal Revenue Service. Baldetti resigned in early May to the joy of thousands of demonstrators.

The 2017 Guatemala orphanage fire occurred on 8 March 2017,at the Virgen de la Asunción Safe Home in San JoséPinula,Guatemala. Forty-one girls,aged between 14 and 17 years old,were killed when a fire broke out at the orphanage. The girls had been locked in a schoolroom following protests,riots and an escape attempt which occurred the day before. In the aftermath of the fire,three government officials—including the country's Secretary of Social Welfare—were arrested and charged with crimes such as wrongful death and negligence.

However,as no presidential candidate obtained over 50 percent of the vote in the first round on 25 June 2023,a second round was held between the top two finishers on 20 August 2023:Congressman Bernardo Arévalo of the Movimiento Semilla and Sandra Torres,a former first lady representing the National Unity of Hope (UNE) party. Arévalo defeated Torres in the second round with nearly 61 percent of the vote in what was seen as a landslide. The ruling Vamos party won the largest number of seats in Congress.

Rodolfo Antonio Delgado Montes is a Salvadoran lawyer who currently serves as the attorney general of El Salvador. He was appointed as attorney general by the Legislative Assembly in May 2021 after his predecessor,Raúl Melara,was removed by the Nuevas Ideas-led legislature. Prior to his appointment as attorney general,he worked for the Office of the Attorney General from 1995 to 2017 in various roles.
