Juana B. Matias is a Dominican-American politician and attorney from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. A member of the Democratic Party,she served in the Massachusetts House of Representatives from 2017 to 2019.
Matias was born in the Dominican Republic,and her family moved to the United States when she was five years old. Matias earned her bachelor's degree in political science and criminal justice from the University of Massachusetts Boston and a Juris Doctor from Suffolk University Law School. [1] She worked as an immigration advocate before going to work for her family's construction company,and she was admitted to the Massachusetts bar in June 2016. [2] Matias ran successfully for the 16th Essex seat in the Massachusetts House of Representatives in the 2016 elections,defeating incumbent Marcos Devers by receiving 48.8% of the vote in a three-way race. [3]
In 2017,Matias decided to forgo reelection to the state house and instead declared her candidacy for the United States House of Representatives in Massachusetts's 3rd congressional district ,where Democratic Congresswoman Niki Tsongas had announced her retirement. [4] Matias was criticized for claiming during her congressional campaign that she had worked as an "immigration attorney" when in fact she had been an "immigration advocate" who had not yet been admitted to the Massachusetts bar. [2] Matias finished in fourth place in the Democratic Party primary. [5]
Matias was appointed to the board of directors of MassINC in January 2019,and became its chief operating officer in March. [6] President Joe Biden appointed Matias to be the regional administrator for the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development for New England. [7]
Marcos A. Devers is a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives,since January 2019,after having served in the same position from 2011 until 2017. Devers also is a former acting mayor of Lawrence,Massachusetts;when he served as acting mayor from September to November 2001,he became the first Dominican-American to execute the role of mayor in the United States and the first Latino mayor in Massachusetts.
Ayanna Soyini Pressley is an American politician who has served as the U.S. representative for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district since 2019. This district includes the northern three quarters of Boston,most of Cambridge,parts of Milton,as well as all of Chelsea,Everett,Randolph,and Somerville. Before serving in the United States House of Representatives,Pressley served as an at-large member of the Boston City Council from 2010 through 2019. She was elected to the United States House of Representatives in 2018 after she defeated the ten-term incumbent Mike Capuano in the Democratic primary election for Massachusetts's 7th congressional district and ran unopposed in the general election. Pressley was the first black woman elected to the Boston City Council and the first black woman elected to Congress from Massachusetts. Pressley is a member of "The Squad",a group of progressive Congress members.
Katherine Marlea Clark is an American lawyer and politician who has served as House Minority Whip since 2023 and the U.S. representative for Massachusetts's 5th congressional district since 2013. She previously served as Assistant Speaker from 2021 to 2023 and Vice Chair of the House Democratic Caucus from 2019 to 2021. Joseph Patrick Kennedy III is an American politician and diplomat who has been the United States Special Envoy for Northern Ireland since 2022. Prior to this,Kennedy served as the U.S. representative for Massachusetts's 4th congressional district from 2013 to 2021. A member of the Democratic Party,he represented a district that extends from Boston's western suburbs to the state's South Coast. He worked as an assistant district attorney in the Cape and Islands and Middlesex County,Massachusetts,offices before his election to Congress. In January 2021,he became a CNN commentator.
