Julie Eiselt (born February 17,1961) [1] is the current mayor pro tem of Charlotte,North Carolina,an office she has held since December 4,2017. Eiselt was elected by her colleagues on the Charlotte City Council to this position at the beginning of her second term. She succeeded Vi Lyles,who took office as Mayor of Charlotte that same day. Originally from Elm Grove,Wisconsin,Eiselt moved to Charlotte in 1998 after a career in finance and manufacturing,settling in North Carolina with her husband Tom to raise their three children. After she was held at gunpoint in an attempted kidnapping in 2007,Eiselt was motivated to pursue a greater role in civic advocacy,founding Neighbors for a Safer Charlotte to work towards public safety solutions in cooperation with the City and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Her first run for office in 2015 saw her elected to an at-large seat on the Charlotte City Council that November with more votes than any other candidate,including both of those running for mayor. [3] She was re-elected in 2017,again as the top vote-getter. [4]
Elaine Folk Marshall is an American attorney and politician who has served as the North Carolina Secretary of State since 1997. A member of the Democratic Party,she is the first woman to be elected to statewide office in North Carolina. Marshall was also the unsuccessful Democratic nominee for the United States Senate seat then held by Republican Richard Burr in the 2010 election. In 2020,Marshall was re-elected to a seventh term as North Carolina Secretary of State. In 2024,she was reelected to an eighth term winning with 51 percent of the vote.

The Charlotte City Council is the legislative body of the City of Charlotte and forms part of a council–manager system of government. The Council is made up of eleven members and the Mayor,all elected to two-year terms in odd-numbered years. Four Council Members are elected at-large with the other seven representing districts. Though elected separately,the Mayor presides over City Council meetings. A Mayor Pro Tem is elected by the members of the City Council to preside when the Mayor is absent,and to assume the office of Mayor in an acting capacity should the Mayor no longer be able to do so.

Michael Barnes was the mayor pro tempore of Charlotte,North Carolina. He also served as acting mayor for a short time following the resignation of former mayor Patrick Cannon,who was arrested on March 26,2014 for corruption charges. Second-round primaries would have been held on Tuesday,October 10,2017,if they had been necessary,but both primary winners received more than the minimum 40 percent of the vote needed to avoid a runoff. The incumbent,Democrat Jennifer Roberts,was eligible to run for a second two-year term. She ran but lost the Democratic nomination in the primary. Two members of the City Council,Democrat Vi Lyles and Republican Kenny Smith,won the primaries and advanced to face each other in the general election. Vi Lyles defeated Kenny Smith in the general election,and became the 59th mayor of Charlotte,North Carolina.

She was re-elected in a landslide over Republican David Rice.

She was first elected mayor in 2013,after serving on the Board of Aldermen of Carrboro for six years from 2007 to 2013. The 2022 mayoral election in the city of Raleigh,North Carolina,was originally scheduled to be held on Tuesday,October 5,2021,but was postponed until November 8,2022,by the passage of a state law in June 2021 that permanently moved Raleigh municipal elections to even years. The law also changed the requirement that winners attain a majority of the vote in a runoff if necessary,instead allowing election by a simple plurality. Incumbent mayor Mary-Ann Baldwin sought election to a second term in office. She was challenged by Terrance Ruth and DaQuanta Copeland.
