Julio Catalino Sadorra (born September 14, 1986) is a Filipino chess grandmaster. [1] He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2017 where he was seeded 101 and where he lost to the 28th-seeded Super GM Maxim Matlakov, 0.5-1.5. [2] Sadorra has represented the Philippines at the Chess Olympiad since 2014. [3] [4] He tied for first place in the U.S. Open Chess Championship in 2013. [5]
In 2009, Sadorra moved to the United States to pursue an education. [6] He attended the University of Texas at Dallas on a chess scholarship, where he was a team member that went to the Final Four twice. [7] He graduated with a bachelor's degree in Business Administration in 2013, and received the title of Grandmaster while pursuing his studies. [8]
In 2008, then still an International Master (IM), Sadorra played for the Club Intchess Team of Singapore in the 1st Asian Club Chess Cup held in Al-Ain, Abu Dhabi, UAE, manning Board 2 with an ELO of 2431 where he scored 4.0/7 (+4 =0 -3) for a 57.1% winning rate and a Tournament Performance Rating (TPR) of 2400. The team ended in 9th place among 30 teams. [9]
GM Sadorra tied for first in the 2013 US Open held in Madison, Wisconsin from July 27-August 4. His eight wins and one loss put him on 8/9 and he finished tied with eventual winner GM Joshua Friedel and IM Mackenzie Molner. Friedel and Molner advanced on tiebreaks to a blitz playoff, which Friedel won as Sadorra eventually finished in 3rd place. [10] He also won the Continental class(2) championship at Virginia in June 2016. [11]
In 2017, he tied for first with fellow Filipino GM Mark Paragua in the 9th Annual Chesapeake Open with a record of 6-1 (+5 =2 -0) in the tournament that employed no tie-breaks. Sadorra and Paragua each won US$1,100.00 for their first place tie. [12] [13]
He has coached for the North Texas Chess Academy [12] and UT Dallas. [7] Sadorra was part of the University of Texas (UT) Dallas team that won the Pan-American Intercollegiate Championship in 2010, 2011 and 2012. [14]
GM Sadorra has already played for Team Philippines thrice in the Chess Olympiad, 2014, 2016 and 2018 editions where he played Board 1 in all three (3) olympiads:
After the 2018 edition, Sadorra has already recorded 12 wins, 14 draws and 4 losses for a total of 19 points in 30 games (63.3%).
Sadorra has already taken part in four (4) editions of the Asian Individual Chess Championship also known as the Asian Continental Championship:

Sadorra, still an IM then, took part in the 10th Dubai Open (2008) held on April 6–15, 2008 and won by fellow Filipino (at that time) GM Wesley So where he finished in a tie for 40th-56th places eventually ending up in 42nd place scoring 5.0/9 posting 4 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses with a TPR of 2387 as opposed to his ELO then of 2455. His 2 draws were against highly-rated GMs Li Chao of China (2581) and David Arutinian of Georgia (2593) in the 4th and 5th rounds, respectively. [27]
GM Sadorra participated in the 112th US Open, a 9-round Swiss System event held from July 30 - August 7, 2011 at Orlando, Florida where he tied for 14th-35th places with a score of 6.5/9 (5 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss) where he had an ELO of 2561. [28]
Sadorra won the 3rd Washington Chess Congress held on October 5–16, 2016 in Arlington, Virginia. [29] He actually ended up in a tie with 4 others: GM Gil Popilski, IM Lui Ruifeng, GM Andrey Stukopin and FM David Brodsky all with 6.5/9 (5W 3D 1L) but won the title with better tie-breaks (43). He won the top prize of US$1,900.00. [30]
GM Sadorra, together with GM John Paul Gomez, represented the Philippines in the 5th Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games Blitz Men (Chess) held in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan on September 17–27, 2017 where the team placed 7th overall with 1 win and 4 draws with Sadorra scoring 3.0/5 with 2 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss as Board 1 player. Irina Borisivna Krush is an American chess Grandmaster. She is the first woman, and as of August 2022 the only woman, to earn the GM title while playing for the United States. Krush is an eight-time U.S. Women's Champion.
Mark Callano Paragua is a Filipino chess grandmaster. He won the Philippine Chess Championship in 2012. He was the youngest Filipino master ever, at nine years of age. He also became the youngest Filipino GM ever at 20, beating Eugenio Torre's record by about two years.
Alexander Ivanov is a Soviet-born American chess grandmaster. Born in Omsk, present-day Russia, he moved to the United States in 1988. FIDE awarded him his Grandmaster title in 1991. He lives in Massachusetts with his wife, fellow chess player and Woman International Master Esther Epstein.
Zhang Pengxiang is a Chinese chess grandmaster and the 2007 Asian Chess Champion. In 2001, he became China's 12th Grandmaster. Zhang's peak rating was 2657 in April 2007 when he was ranked 47th in the world.

Rogelio Antonio Jr. is a Filipino chess grandmaster, who was awarded the title in 1993. He is affectionately known as "Joey" Antonio or GM Joey. Antonio finished tied for 3rd-8th places in the 2009 Asian Chess Championship and became the first player in the Philippines' history to qualify for the World Cup later in 2009.
Wesley Barbossa So is a Filipino and American chess grandmaster and three-time U.S. Chess Champion. He is also a three-time Philippine Chess Champion. On the March 2017 FIDE rating list, he was ranked number two in the world and had an Elo rating of 2822, making him the fifth-highest-rated player in history.

Eugenio "Eugene" Torre is a Filipino chess player. In 1974, at 22 years old, he became the first Filipino and non-Soviet Asian to qualify for the title Grandmaster. Torre did this by winning the silver medal in the 21st Chess Olympiad in Nice, France. He is considered the strongest chess player the Philippines produced during the 1980s and 1990s, and played for the Philippines on board 1 in seventeen Chess Olympiads. In 2021, Torre was inducted into the World Chess Hall of Fame.
Buenaventura "Bong" Mendieta Villamayor is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of Grandmaster by FIDE in 2000, becoming the fourth from the Philippines to achieve this feat.
Akshayraj Kore, is an Indian chess player and a Grandmaster. In 2006, he became Maharashtra's youngest International Master at the time after he won the Invitational IM Norm Round Robin Chess Tournament in Luhansk, Ukraine. In February 2013, he became India's 32nd Grandmaster.
Oliver Barbosa is a Filipino chess grandmaster. He earned his International Master title in 2008 and his grandmaster title in 2011. Barbosa won the 10th Parsvnath International Grandmasters Tournament in New Delhi, with 9.5/11 and an astounding Tournament Performance Rating (TPR) of 2710. By winning the said tournament, he also raised his ELO Live Rating from 2573 to 2627 as he gained 53.8 ELO rating points to become the Philippines 3rd Super GM. He earned his first GM norm in the Asian Individual in Mashad, Iran and his second norm in the Philippines National Championships. In 2014, he tied for 1st–2nd with Francisco Vallejo Pons in the Thailand Open Chess Championship.
Irene Kharisma Sukandar is an Indonesian chess player and a two-time Asian women's champion. She is considered to be the greatest Indonesian female player of all times. She is the first female player from Indonesia to achieve both the Woman Grandmaster (WGM) and International Master (IM) titles. She graduated from Gunadarma University. She won two gold medals at the 2013 SEA Games.

John Paul Gomez is a Filipino chess player. He was awarded the title of International Master (IM) in 2007 and International Grandmaster (GM) in 2009. He is a three-time Filipino national junior champion and has also won the Filipino Chess Championship.
Ricardo de Guzman is a Filipino chess player. He was one of the premiere players of the Philippines in the 1980s and was awarded the title of International Master in 1982. He is nationally ranked 39th in the Philippines, 22nd among active players. He reached a peak rating of 2439 but currently has a classical ELO rating of 2344, rapid rating of 2261 and blitz rating of 2363 per FIDE.
Enrico Sevillano is a Filipino and American chess player who received the FIDE title of Grandmaster (GM) in September 2012. He plays for the United States Chess Federation (USCF) where he has a Regular Rating of 2542, Quick Rating of 2488 and Blitz Rating of 2572. He is ranked #112 among all players in the US, #72 among all active players, #235 in the American Continent and #1796 among all players in the world. Per FIDE, he reached a peak rating of 2537 and currently has an ELO standard rating of 2447 and blitz rating of 2515.
