Professional career
Valera signed with the New York Mets as an amateur free agent on March 6,1986.
On April 12,1992,the Mets traded Valera and a player to be named later (Julian Vasquez) to the California Angels in exchange for shortstop Dick Schofield. [1]
1992 would be Valera's longest MLB season pitching in 30 games (28 starts) and throwing 188 innings with a 3.73 ERA. In 1993,Valera appeared in just 19 games (5 starts) with a 6.62 ERA and required Tommy John surgery. [2] He spent the 1994 and 1995 seasons pitching in the Angels' farm system.
On March 18,1996,the Kansas City Royals purchased Valera's contract from the Angels for an undisclosed amount of cash. [3] He finished the season with a 3-2 record,appearing in 31 games (2 starts) and compiled a 6.46 ERA in 61.1 innings pitched.
On December 30,1996,Valera signed with the Chicago Cubs but did not pitch in 1997. In 1998,Valera attempted a comeback with the New York Yankees but struggled within their farm system.
David Brian Cone is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher, and current color commentator for the New York Yankees on the YES Network and WPIX as well as for ESPN on Sunday Night Baseball. A third round draft pick of the Kansas City Royals in 1981 MLB Draft, he made his MLB debut in 1986 and continued playing until 2003, pitching for five different teams. Cone batted left-handed and threw right-handed.

He was named the National League Manager of the Year in 2010.

The 1992 New York Mets season was the 31st regular season for the Mets. The Mets entered the season attempting to improve on their 1991 season, where due in part to a second half collapse they finished 78–84 and recorded their first losing record since 1983. Brent Terry Strom is an American former Major League Baseball (MLB) pitcher and active pitching coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks. His MLB playing career spanned from 1972 to 1973 and 1975 to 1977 for the New York Mets, Cleveland Indians and San Diego Padres. He served as pitching coach for the Houston Astros in 1996 and from 2014 to 2021, helping guide the club to the 2017 World Series championship. He also coached the Kansas City Royals from 2000 to 2001. According to an interview with Tommy John, Strom was the second pitcher to receive Tommy John surgery.
