Junaid Azim Mattu is an Indian politician from Jammu and Kashmir. He is a member of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party,and was Mayor of Srinagar till November 2023. He is head of the Jammu and Kashmir Apni Youth Federation as President. [1]
Junaid Azim Mattu was born in Srinagar in a politically active family. His grandfather Ghulam Ahmad Ashai was a founding member of Sheikh Abdullah's Muslim Conference party,later renamed to National Conference. [2]
Mattu studied at the Burn Hall School in Srinagar and the Bishop Cotton School in Shimla. He graduated in Business and Finance from the Michigan State University and worked as a financial analyst in the United States for some time. He returned to Jammu and Kashmir in 2009 to be part of "change and empowerment". [2] [3]
Mattu joined Sajjad Lone's People's Conference party in 2009 and served as the Srinagar district president for the party. In 2013,he switched to the National Conference party and served as its spokesman. [2] He switched back to the People's Conference before contesting the Srinagar municipal corporation elections in 2018. An alliance of the Bharatiya Janata Party and the People's Conference apparently won 40 seats many of the winners contesting as "independents". [3] [4]
Mattu was elected as the Mayor of Srinagar on 6 November 2018 with 40 votes from corporators,beating his closest rival of the Indian National Congress with 26 votes. [5] He aimed to develop the BJP-People's Conference alliance as a 'third front' in the Kashmir Valley in competition with the National Conference and the People's Democratic Party. [3]
In June 2020,he was removed from the position of Mayor of Srinagar after losing a no-confidence motion. [6] However,in November 2020,he was once re-elected as Mayor of Srinagar with a 2/3rd majority. [7]
Mattu,in November 2020,joined Altaf Bukhari led Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. [8] [9] In February 2021,he was appointed as the President of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Youth Federation,which is youth wing of Jammu and Kashmir Apni Party. [1]
Mufti Mohammad Sayeed was an Indian politician who served twice as the Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir,during November 2002–November 2005 and March 2015–January 2016. He was also Minister of Tourism in Rajiv Gandhi's cabinet and Home Minister of India in V. P. Singh's cabinet. He started in the wing of the National Conference led by G. M. Sadiq,which later merged into the Indian National Congress. He switched to Janata Dal in 1987,eventually founding his own regional party,People's Democratic Party (PDP). The PDP continues to be a political force in Jammu and Kashmir,currently led by his daughter Mehbooba Mufti.
Mehbooba Mufti is an Indian politician of the PDP,who served as the 9th Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir from 4 April 2016 to 19 June 2018. She was the first Female CM of J&K. After the revocation of the special status (autonomy) of the state in August 2019,Mufti was detained without any charges at first and later under the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act. She was released only in October 2020,after the Supreme Court of India quizzed the government about the length of her detention.
Ghulam Nabi Azad is an Indian politician who served as Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha between 2014 and 2021. He also served as the Chief Minister of erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir from 2005 to 2008. On 26 September 2022,Azad announced his own political party as Democratic Progressive Azad Party. He is the chief patron cum founder of Democratic Progressive Azad Party.
The Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is a state political party in Jammu and Kashmir,India. The PDP was headed and founded by Mufti Mohammed Sayeed. His daughter,Mehbooba Mufti,succeeded him as party leader and as Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir following his death in January 2016. The party is a member of the People's Alliance for Gupkar Declaration electoral alliance. The 2019–2021 Jammu and Kashmir lockdown was a preventive security lockdown and communications blackout that had been imposed throughout the Indian-administered union territory of Jammu and Kashmir following the revocation of Article 370 which lasted until February 2021,with the goal of preemptively curbing unrest,violence and protests. Most separatist leaders had and have been detained in the crackdown. The Indian government had stated that the tough lockdown measures and substantially increased deployment of security forces had been aimed at curbing terrorism.
