Other incursion

On 19 June 2023, Israeli soldiers and border police officers entered the Jenin refugee camp to arrest two wanted suspects. This resulted in clashes between Palestinian gunmen from the Jenin Brigades and Israeli soldiers. The clash had led to seven Palestinian deaths and upwards of 90 Palestinians wounded; 8 wounded Israeli soldiers. The incursion led to reprisals on both Israeli and Palestinian populations in the occupied West Bank.

Raid

During the early morning of 19 June 2023, Israeli soldiers and border police officers entered into the Jenin refugee camp to arrest two wanted suspects. Clashes between Palestinian gunmen from the Jenin Brigades and Israeli soldiers broke out. Six Palestinians were killed ouright, and a seventh victim died in hospital. Three of the dead are known to have been militants. [4] At least 90 Palestinians were wounded, among whom 22 are in critical condition. [2] [5] [1] As the Israeli soldiers and border police officers were leaving the city, a roadside bomb was detonated under an Israeli armored vehicle, leaving 8 soldiers wounded, all of whom were successfully evacuated by helicopter. The level and strength of the improvised explosive device (IED) used by the Palestinian militants surprised the Israeli army, as it shows rapid improvement compared to previous poorly performing IEDs. [6]

Israel used helicopters in the incursion, the first time they had been deployed against Palestinian villages for two decades. [6] Israeli snipers reportedly shot at several Palestinian journalists, wearing press jackets, who were attempting to cover the unfolding incursion. One such journalist, Hazem Nasser working for as a cameraman for Al-Ghad TV, was shot and wounded. [7] [8] The Palestinian Red Crescent stated that Israeli fire had targeted four Palestinian ambulances. [5] According to Haaretz, a 15 year old girl, Sadeel Turkman, was shot while inside her home. [9]

Several major Palestinian organisations such as Hamas and the PFLP praised the militants of Jenin. [10] The roadside bomb was claimed by Palestinian Islamic Jihad. [2]

Aftermath

In response to the incursion, [11] 2 Palestinian militants, coming from Urif shot dead 4 Israelis near the Israeli settlement of Eli on 20 June 2023. One of the assailants was shot dead on the scene by an armed settler, the other was later killed by Israeli forces in Tubas. [12]

In response to the Eli shooting, on 21 June 2023, hundreds of Israeli settlers, armed and masked, attacked the Palestinian village of Turmus Ayya in the occupied West Bank, setting at least 50 vehicles and 15 houses on fire. One Palestinian died and 12 others were wounded. [13] The village mayor remarked that "the Israeli army [was] not doing anything to stop" the violence. [14] The following day they attacked the village of Al-Lubban ash-Sharqiya destroying vehicles, damaging 10 homes, vandalizing two shops, a gas station a wheat warehouse, and electricity poles. [15]

In 2008, Israel sought to halt the rocket and mortar fire from Gaza that killed four Israeli civilians that year and caused widespread trauma and disruption of life in Israeli towns and villages close to the Gaza border. In addition, Israel insisted that any deal include an end to Hamas's military buildup in Gaza, and movement toward the release of Corporal Gilad Shalit. Hamas wanted an end to the frequent Israeli military strikes and incursions into Gaza, and an easing of the economic blockade that Israel has imposed since Hamas took over the area in 2007.

Israel Defense Forces (IDF) entered the camp, and other areas under the administration of the Palestinian Authority, during the Second Intifada, as part of Operation Defensive Shield. The Jenin camp was targeted after Israel reported that it had "served as a launch site for numerous terrorist attacks against both Israeli civilians and Israeli towns and villages in the area."

The Jenin refugee camp, also known as the Jenin camp, is a Palestinian refugee camp located in the city of Jenin in the northern West Bank. It was established in 1953 to house Palestinians who fled or were expelled from their homes by Israeli forces during and in the aftermath of the 1948 Palestine War. The camp has since become a stronghold of Palestinian militants and has become known as "the martyr's capital" by Palestinians, and "the hornets' nest" by Israelis.

During the Israel–Hamas war, Israeli forces have carried out multiple ground incursions, occasionally accompanied by airstrikes, into several Palestinian cities and refugee camps in the West Bank, including Jenin and Tulkarm. The Israeli incursions have led to clashes with Palestinian militants. Over 200 Palestinians have been killed by Israel since the conflict began, including 75 children. Israel has arrested more than 7,210 Palestinians since 7 October 2023. On 15 December, Doctors Without Borders reported 2023 was the deadliest year for Palestinians in the West Bank in recorded history.

Since the beginning of the Israel–Hamas war, which has mostly been confined to southern Israel and the Gaza Strip, a number of armed clashes and standoffs have been reported in other parts of the Middle East, particularly involving Shia Islamist militias backed by Iran. There has been speculation that any escalation of these incidents, specifically between Israel and Hezbollah—an Iranian-backed Shia militia which is based in southern Lebanon and which is more powerful than the Lebanese Armed Forces —could bring the entire region into a full-scale military conflict. In addition to the Israel–Hezbollah conflict, the Iranian-backed Houthi militia—which controls parts of northern Yemen, but is not internationally recognized as the country's government —became directly involved in the conflict by firing missiles at Israeli cities, albeit on a limited scale; the Houthis have since focused more on seizing civilian cargo ships passing through the Red Sea in order to inflict economic losses on Israel and the global economy, evoking American and British airstrikes against Houthi-controlled Yemen. Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria have also mounted numerous attacks against American military bases in the region; these confrontations have increasingly escalated tensions between long-time adversaries Iran and the United States, especially after the 2024 Iranian missile strikes in Iraq and Syria. In the West Bank, over 100 Palestinians have been killed in armed confrontations with Israeli soldiers and Israeli settlers, as violence in the territory increased drastically following the Hamas-led attack on Israel.
