The Junior Ryder Cup is a team golf competition between Europe and the United States for junior golfers aged 18 and under. It is based on the men's Ryder Cup and is run by the same organisations, the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe.

Contents

The 2018 event took place at Golf Disneyland, Marne-la-Vallée, Paris, France on Monday 24 and Tuesday 25 September. The United States won 1212–1112, their sixth successive victory in the event. [1]

After postponement and then cancellation of the 2020 event due to COVID-19 pandemic, it was next held in 2023 at Golf Nazionale and Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Italy from September 26–28. [2]

Format

The teams consist of six boys and six girls. From 2008 to 2018 the tournament was played over two days of foursomes, fourball and singles matches. There were three boys' matches and three girls' foursomes matches and six mixed fourball matches on the first day. There were 12 singles matches on the second day, In 2023 the event will be extended to three days with foursomes and fourballs played on the first two days and the singles played on the final day. [2] From 2008 to 2018 there was an informal "friendship match" played on the Ryder Cup course after the Junior Ryder Cup but before the Ryder Cup. However in 2023 the final day singles matches will be played at the host venue. [2] From 1997 to 2006 only fourball matches were played. There were three boys' matches and three girls' matches on the first day and six mixed matches on the second day.

History

In 1995 an informal match was played between European junior golfers and Central New York PGA Section and area juniors. The European team included 15-year-old Sergio García. [3]

Lee John Westwood is an English professional golfer. The Junior Solheim Cup is a version of the Solheim Cup for girls aged 12 to 18. It was inaugurated in 2002. It is currently officially called the PING Junior Solheim Cup. The Junior Solheim Cup follows a similar format to The Solheim Cup and features the top 12 U.S. amateur girls—defined as girls participating in American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) events—versus their European counterparts. College/university golfers are ineligible to participate in the event, even if they meet the age cutoff. The event is held over two days, with six fourball and six foursomes matches on the first day, and twelve singles matches on the second day.

The Jacques Léglise Trophy is an annual amateur boys' team golf competition between Great Britain & Ireland and the Continent of Europe. It was first played in 1977, as a one-day match before the Boys Amateur Championship, but since 1996 it has been played as a separate two-day match. The venue generally alternates between Great Britain and Ireland and the continent. From 1958 to 1966 a similar match was played between a combined England and Scotland team and the Continent of Europe.

The 39th Ryder Cup was held September 28–30, 2012, in the United States at the Medinah Country Club in Medinah, Illinois, a suburb northwest of Chicago. This was the first time that the Ryder Cup was held in Illinois. Europe went into the competition as the cup holders, having won in 2010 to regain it. The team captains were Davis Love III for the U.S. and José María Olazábal for Europe.

The 42nd Ryder Cup Matches were held in France from 28 to 30 September 2018 on the Albatros Course of Le Golf National in Guyancourt, a suburb southwest of Paris. It was the second Ryder Cup to be held in Continental Europe, after the 1997 contest, which was held in Spain. The United States were the defending champions, but had lost the last five matches in Europe, having last won there in 1993. Europe regained the Ryder Cup, winning by 1712 points to 1012.

The 44th Ryder Cup was a series of golf matches between teams representing the DP World Tour (Europe) and the PGA of America for the Ryder Cup, that was held in Italy from 29 September to 1 October 2023 at Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio, northeast of Rome. The biennial event was originally scheduled for 2022, before the 43rd matches were postponed into 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Junior Vagliano Trophy is an annual girls amateur golf tournament. It is co-organised by The R&A and the European Golf Association and is contested by teams representing "Great Britain and Ireland" and the "Continent of Europe". The first event was in 2011. Originally it was played in odd-numbered years at the same time and location as the Vagliano Trophy but in 2021 it became an annual event. Girls must be under-16 on 1 January of the year of the event. The Continent of Europe has won all seven matches to date.

The European Girls' Team Championship is a European amateur team golf championship for women up to 18 organised by the European Golf Association. The inaugural event was held in 1991. It was played in odd-numbered years from 1991 to 1999 and has been played annually since 1999.

Emilie Alba Paltrinieri is an Italian amateur golfer. In 2016 she won The R&A's Girls Amateur Championship.

The 2023 Solheim Cup was the 18th edition of the Solheim Cup matches, held 22–24 September in southern Spain at the Finca Cortesin in Casares, Andalusia. The Solheim Cup is a biennial team competition between the top women professional golfers from Europe and the United States. Stacy Lewis captained the U.S. team for the first time and Suzann Pettersen captained the European team for the first time. The par-72 course was set at 6,312 metres (6,903 yd).

Alessandra Fanali is an Italian professional golfer who plays on the Ladies European Tour. She was runner-up at the 2022 Ladies Italian Open.
