K-UTE Radio is a college radio station broadcasting via the internet to the campus of the University of Utah and around the world. The station primarily plays music from independent artists and several student produced shows, which range from talk to different types of music sets. The station can be heard on Channel 99 cable on campus, via an iPhone app, as well as online at its website. The station receives most of its music from the College Music Journal and from students themselves. As of 2009, the station is operating normally.

History

K-UTE has been broadcasting to the University of Utah since 1988. The station lost its "over the air" broadcast in 2005 when the nearby dormitories were taken down. In late 2007 and early 2008, a new antenna was constructed and in February 2008, the station was once again broadcasting on its AM frequency. [1] Ever since its sign on, the station has experienced financial trouble and several times has almost been shut down. The student government on campus (known as ASUU) cut the station's funding in 2007, and had to operate financially on the stations reserve funding.

In early 2007, a controversy over a sex hotline and vandalism of the studio led to the firing of two DJs hosting a popular show known as "Behind The Blue Door." [2]

Despite the on-air behavior, in 2008 the University of Utah's student government, ASUU, reinstated funding for the station.

From 2009-2011, Jamis Johnson, Bob Kubichek, Jake Moore, and Sean Halls respectively led the station under the guidance of Peter Rugh, graduate fellow.

Jamis, who would later found PleasrDAO, was responsible for organizing a group of students and the financial resources to pay back fines to the RIAA. This fine was retroactive and was over ten thousand dollars to bring the station back in compliance, allowing them to broadcast again.

Noting the unreliable cyclical funding of ASUU throughout the history of the station, Halls and Rugh worked with The Daily Utah Chronicle's leadership team to instead derive consistent funding for campus media, including the radio station, through an evergreen student fee.

This largely solved the cash flow problems created when ASUU had a governing body who would insist on an audit of K-UTE and then withdraw funding. Being an AM station the majority of its existence, the station would routinely fail this audit as it could not reliably prove listenership.

In 2016, the station considered adding an FM signal but abandoned that proposition due to a lack of funding. [3]

KVRX Student radio station at the University of Texas at Austin

KVRX is the student radio station at the University of Texas in Austin, Texas, with an effective radiated power of 3,000 watts. Licensed to The University of Texas, KVRX shares the 91.7 frequency with KOOP, broadcasting from 7 p.m. to 9 a.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 p.m. to 9 a.m. Saturday and Sunday, with KOOP, operated by Austin Co-op Radio, broadcasting during the remaining hours. KSDB-FM Radio station in Manhattan, Kansas

KSDB-FM is Kansas State University's campus radio station. A non-commercial radio station located in Manhattan, Kansas, broadcasting on 91.9 MHz on the FM dial, KSDB is staffed by about 100 student volunteers who gain valuable experience in all areas of radio broadcasting. WKPS Radio station in University Park, Pennsylvania

WXIN is the student campus radio broadcast service of Rhode Island College. WXIN operates a part 15 FM transmitter on the property of Rhode Island College, in Providence, Rhode Island, United States. Crescent City Radio is an internet radio station based in New Orleans serving Metropolitan New Orleans and southern Mississippi as well as globally through its internet presence as a Freeform radio station. The station broadcasts a diverse offering of music along with locally produced entertainment and talk programs. Music genres typically aired include urban contemporary, mainstream urban, adult contemporary, swamp pop, gospel, and Latin CHR. The station is managed and operated by the Music Industry Studies Program of the College of Music and Fine Arts at Loyola University New Orleans.

The University of Utah Marching Band has been called the premier marching ensemble of the University of Utah. It has also been stated that the band has figured prominently in the state of Utah's marching music history since its earliest days. The band performs at all University of Utah home football games, as well as some away games and bowl games. Its current director is Brian Sproul.
