KT Group is a family-owned business enterprise in Myanmar, with business interests in aviation, real estate, container ports, and oil and gas. [2] [3] KT Group is led by Jonathan Kyaw Thaung, its CEO. [2] The Kyaw Thaung family also operates a network of 28 subsidiaries and associated businesses, including Ky Tha Group. [4] [2] KT Group also operates a charitable arm, KT Care, founded in 2008. [3]
KT Group has courted significant scrutiny for its close ties to the Burmese military. [5] The group has partnerships with military-linked businessmen including Aung Pyae Sone, the son of Min Aung Hlaing, the country's military ruler. [6]
In 2016, KT Group leased the Yangon's TMT Ports terminal (formerly Bo Aung Kyaw terminal) from the military-owned Myanma Economic Holdings Limited under a 50-year build-operate-transfer agreement worth US$3 million per year. [7] In February 2020, Burma Campaign UK successfully pressured British companies using the port to terminate their relationship with KT Group due to military ties. [8] [9]
In August 2021, a United Nations fact-finding mission concluded that KT Group warranted criminal investigation for donating US$40,000 to the military to assist it with the Rohingya clearance operations in Rakhine State. [10] In November 2021, KT Group signalled an interest in acquiring Telenor Myanmar. [6] In December 2021, a New York Times investigation found that KT Group had been used by the Burmese military to circumvent sanctions to purchase military equipment and hardware, including the import of aircraft for the Burmese military's fleet, and a coastal radar technology system made by Thales, which is partially owned by the French government. Pegu Club is a recognized heritage site in Yangon, Myanmar, which was a Victorian-style Gentlemen's club founded in 1871 during the British colonization of Burma. The building was built in 1880 and finished in 1882. Pegu Club used to be a place for British officials to spend their time for a drink or two. It was well known because of its signature Pegu Club Cocktail. In southeast Asia, Pegu Club was an equivalent place to the Royal Selangor Club of Kuala Lumpur and The Tanglin Club of Singapore. Rudyard Kipling, as a young newspaperman, visited Pegu Club when he was in Yangon in 1889. Paul Theroux visited Pegu Club in the early 1970s and wrote about it in his book The Great Railway Bazaar. The first phase of the Pegu Club's restoration was completed in 2018.
Yoma Bank Limited is one of Myanmar's largest commercial banks. It is the 4th-biggest bank in Myanmar. The bank is led by New Zealander Dean Cleland and has 80 branches across Myanmar.
Wunna Maung Lwin is a Burmese politician and a member of State Administration Council. He was a Minister of Foreign Affairs under Commander-in-Chief of Defence Services Min Aung Hlaing after the 2021 Myanmar coup d'état. He previously served as the Minister of Foreign Affairs from March 2011 to March 2016. He is a retired colonel in the Myanmar Army.
Myanma Economic Holdings Public Company Limited is one of two major conglomerates run by the Burmese military, the other being the Myanmar Economic Corporation (MEC). MEHL business interests include banking, construction, mining, agriculture, tobacco and food.
Zaykabar Company Limited is a major Burmese conglomerate with interests in construction and telecommunications. The company was founded by Khin Shwe in 1990.
Dagon International Limited is a major Burmese conglomerate with interests in construction, timber extraction, agriculture and import-export. The company was founded by Dagon Win Aung and Win Thein in the early 1990s.
Aung Thaung was a Burmese politician and businessman. He served as a member of the country's lower house, the Pyithu Hluttaw, representing the constituency of Taungtha Township, after being elected in the 2010 general election.

She was a member of parliament in the House of Representatives for Dagon Township constituency in 2015 elections but did not win her seat at Mayangone Township when she ran in 2020 elections on her newly established People's Pioneer Party platform. She owns a number of gold, jewelry, and gem production companies as well as a real estate business.
Kyaw Zeya is a Burmese politician and a retired lieutenant colonel in the armed forces who was served as a Member of Parliament in the Yangon Region Hluttaw for Dagon Township No. 2 constituency. He also served on the board of Myanmar Economic Holdings Limited, a major conglomerate run by the military, for 10 years. He was a member of the National League for Democracy until 2019 when he went on to join People's Pioneer Party.
Project K is a seven-member boy band in Myanmar that formed in 2016. The septet — composed of Bhone Nay Lin, Bhone Nay Min, Chan Myae Oo, Hein Yar, Min Khant Hein, William Tun, and Ye Yint Thaw — is known for their dancing and singing abilities, and fashion. Until the debut of ALFA in 2019, Project K was Myanmar's only K-pop style boy band. The K in "Project K" stands for "king," "Korea," and "K-pop." The group is known for incorporating traditional Burmese dance styles to their dance performances, and has amassed as significant social media following as a result.
Justice For Myanmar is a covert group of activists campaigning for justice and accountability for the people of Myanmar. Justice for Myanmar's public website launched on 28 April 2020. Since its launch, the group has published a number of high-profile exposés related to the business dealings of high-ranking military and government officials in the country, in a campaign to publicly pressure the dismantling of the Burmese military's business practices and systemic corruption.
Mytel is a major telecommunications company in Myanmar (Burma), as one of four national carriers. Mytel is operated as a joint venture between the Burmese military and Viettel, which is owned by Vietnam's Ministry of National Defence. Mytel has been criticized and scrutinized for serving as a major source of revenue for the Burmese military.
General Maung Maung Kyaw is a Burmese military officer who served on Myanmar's State Administration Council from 2021 to 2023. He previously served as Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Air Force from 2018 to 2022.
7th Sense Creation is a major film production and media company in Myanmar. 7th Sense was cofounded by Khin Thiri Thet Mon, the daughter of Myanmar's commander-in-chief Min Aung Hlaing, San Ko Ko Tint San, the son of former sports minister Tint Hsan, Wai Min Aung, and Naing Phyo Kyaw in 2017. The company was registered with Myanmar's Directorate of Investment and Company Administration on 3 April 2017. Between 2017 and 2019, it produced eight motion picture films, including Mone Swel, a blockbuster that won a Myanmar Academy Award. The company has courted scrutiny for its ability to outspend rivals on production budgets and actor salaries.

The People's Pioneer Party is a political party in Myanmar. More than half of the party's 19 founders are businessmen. They include U Myint, a former economic adviser to the Thein Sein's Cabinet; Zaw Oo, an economist who also serves as the party's economic and policy adviser; and Thet Thet Khaing, former member of the Pyithu Hluttaw for Dagon Township who resigned from the National League for Democracy.
Thein Win Zaw is a Burmese businessman, best known for founding Shwe Byain Phyu Group of Companies, a conglomerate with business interests in petrol stations, jade mining, timber, and food exports. He was also the chairman of Gems and Jewelry Entrepreneurs Association (Yangon) from 2018 to 2020.
