Kadrush Radogoshi (born 1948 in Gjakova, Kosova) is an Albanian poet, novelist, play-writer, and literary critic from Kosovo. [1] He is a dissident who opposed the revocation of the autonomy of Kosovo from the Milosevic's regime, consequently being arrested and imprisoned. [2] Radogoshi served as President of Writers' Union of Kosovo. In 2010, he settled in Canada.

Life

He was born in Gjakova. He completed the primary school, the secondary school and the Teachers' College in Gjakova, whereas the Faculty of Philosophy in Pristina, where he also completed the postgraduate studies and received the Master of Arts in literature. From 1979 to 1986, he edited literary magazine Paths and edited several books of different literary genres. [3]

Kadrush Radogoshi was president of Literary Club "Gjon Nikollë Kazazi" in Gjakova from 1992 to 1997. He worked as a teacher from 1969 to 1981, where after he was repeatedly imprisoned under section 133 of the Yugoslav criminal law forbidding freedom of speech. When Kosovo's nascent autonomy was revoked by Serbian leader Slobodan Milosevic, Radogoshi was one of 237 Albanian intellectuals arrested and imprisoned, and for 18 years, unable to practice his occupation, he was unemployed and politically persecuted.

After the Kosovo War (1998–99), Radogoshi worked as a professor of literature, until 2010, when he immigrated to Canada with his family. During this time he served as president (2007–09) and vice-president (2005–07) of the Union of Writers of Kosovo.

Kadrush Radogoshi has published poems, prose (short stories and novels), a drama, essays, and literary criticism.

Esad Mekuli was an Albanian poet, critic and translator. He was the first president of the Academy of Sciences and Arts of Kosovo. Robert Elsie considered him the father of modern Albanian poetry in Yugoslavia, and his influence in Kosovo remains immense.

Classical music in Kosovo refers to the art music cultivated in Kosovo. The roots of classical music in Kosovo are found in the 1940s and include the time period from the times when Kosovo was part of Yugoslavia to this day. It can be said that there is a tradition of classical music in Kosovo, however, compared to other Balkan countries and especially European countries this tradition is younger. Classical music in Kosovo reaches back about 70 years. Even though in a short period of time, this music has evolved, passing through generations of composers and artists. In his book Albanian: Zhvillimi i stileve në veprat e kompozitorëve shqiptarë të Kosovës, Engjëll Berisha comments:

"The diversity of styles in Albanian music [of Kosovo], its national patterns with sound idea-aesthetic foundations are a characteristic of the European musical reality, so many many works are of interest abroad, too, because during this relatively short period Albanian classical music in Kosovo has compensated for the delay in its development."

The literature of Kosovo is composed of literary texts written in Albanian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Turkish, specifically by authors of Kosovo. Kosovo produced several prominent writers in the Ottoman era. However, Ottoman authorities banned the written use of the Albanian language until 1912. This policy continued during Serb rule until the outbreak of World War II.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">National Theatre of Kosovo</span> Theatre in Pristina, Kosovo

The National Theatre of Kosovo was founded in 1946 in the city of Prizren, Kosovo. It is the highest ranked theatre institution in the country, with the largest number of productions. The National Theatre is the only public theatre in Kosovo and therefore it is financed by Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport. This theatre has produced more than 400 premieres which have been watched by more than 3 million spectators.

Sulejman Aga Batusha or Sulejman Aga Botusha was a prominent Albanian resistance fighter and revolutionary leader from the Highlands of Gjakova and the wider Gjakova region who participated in the Albanian National Awakening. Born sometime in the 19th century, Sulejman Aga would repeatedly lead Albanian forces against the Ottomans throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, ultimately contributing to the Albanian Declaration of Independence from the Ottoman Empire. He was also a chief of the Gashi tribe and was their head in the Gjakova region.
