The Kagara Emirate is a traditional state located in Kagara near Birnin-Gwari town, founded by the Nagwamatse of Kontagora through Madaki Masoyi. Kagara is the capital of Rafi local government Niger State, Nigeria. The emirate is located in Niger East Senatorial District. For administrative purpose aftermath of Dasuki reform of 1976,[ clarification needed ] the emirate is composed of Tegina, Kusharki, Kwangoma, Gunna and later additional districts were created in 1991, thus: Uregi, Kagara, Katunga, Madaka Majajan and Ringa districts.

Kagara Emirate came about after the Dasuki reform of local government in 1976. Since then it has had three rulers including the second emir of Kagara, Alhaji Salihu Tanko, who died after suffering from illness. [1] Alhaji Ahmed Garba Gunna became the third emir of Kagara. [2] [3] [4]

History

The town has a talc processing plant. [5]

Construction of a dam was initiated in 1979 for a sum of N5 billion.[ citation needed ] The Federal University of Technology Minna carried out the environmental impact assessment for the Upper Niger River Basin and Rural Development Authority (UNRBDA). [6] About N3 billion had been paid by February 2002, when the Minister of Water Resources, Muktar Shagari, gave the contractor a deadline to complete the dam by December that year. In February 2004 the Minister of State for Water Resources, Bashr Ishola Awotorebo, visited the dam site, and as a result called the contractor to account for delays in the project. [7] In August 2004, while presenting 500 hand pumps from the Federal Government to the Niger State Governor, Abdulkadir Kure, Mukhtar Shagari said the dam project could be doomed due to non-approval of the budgetary allocation. [8] In August 2007, Bala Kuta of the All Nigeria Peoples Party, a National House of Assembly representative, pledged to help with the dam project. [9]

One student was killed and 27 students, three teachers, twelve family members[ clarification needed ] were kidnapped by bandits on 17 February 2021. [10]

Remains of the Iron Age Nok culture have been found at Kagara, which lies at the far northwest end of the zone of Nok culture. [11]

Muhammadu Bello Abubahkar Masaba Bida, also known as Mohammed Bello Abubakar, was born in Nigeria. Masaba is known for having stirred up controversy in his hometown Bida, Niger State due to his extensive polygamy, and for being outspoken, he was charged under Sharia law and sent to prison in 2008 for refusing to divorce 82 of his wives. Islam limits the number of wives a Muslim man can have to four, mandating they must be all treated equally. He married 120 wives, divorced 10, and fathered 203 children. At the time of his death in 2017, some of his wives were believed to be pregnant.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Goronyo Dam</span> Dam in Sokoto State, Nigeria

The Goronyo Dam impounds the Rima River in Goronyo local government area of Sokoto State in the northern Nigeria. It was completed in 1984 and commissioned in 1992. The dam is a sand-fill structure with a height of 21 m and a total length of 12.5 km. It has a storage capacity of 976 million cubic meters. The dam will be important in controlling floods and releasing water in the dry season for the planned Zauro polder project downstream in Kebbi State.

The Zamfara kidnapping was the abduction of 279 female students aged between 10 and 17 during a raid by armed bandits on 26 February 2021. The kidnapping occurred at the Government Girls Science Secondary School, a boarding school in Jangebe, in Zamfara State, Nigeria. All hostages were released by the bandits on 2 March 2021, though claims vary as to the negotiation methods used by the Nigerian government in order to facilitate their release.

Pandogari is a town (ward) in Kagara, the capital of Rafi local government in Niger State, Nigeria. There is a large Hill which is called Kongoma hill, in Fulfulde (Kwangwamaje), Kongoma hill located at the eastern Pandogari, while on the northern part, the town shared land with Kusharki district, while on the eastern/southern it shared land with Ringa district.The distance from the state capital Minna to Pandogari is about 156.7 km. Pandogari central is headed by a district head called Hakimi in Hausa language, and the current Hakimi of kongoma is Alhaji Idris Aliyu Jibril. There are three major languages in Pandogari town; they are Hausa, Fulani Ɓurawa and kamuku. In 2016, there was a religious conflict between Muslims and Christians in Pandogari which resulted in the death of four people, including a 24 year old young student.

Alhaji Ahmad Garba Gunna is the current Emir of Kagara Emirate, assuming the position on April 7, 2021, succeeding Alhaji Salihu Tanko. Gunna's ascension as the Emir followed the demise of his predecessor, Alhaji Salihu Tanko, on March 2, 2021.
