Kakwkylla was a local saint venerated in Sweden and Germany during the late Middle Ages. The saint is known by a wide range of names and was venerated as a protector against rats and mice. The veneration of Cutubilla (as she is sometimes referred to there) probably originated in Germany, possibly as a misnomer for the Irish saint Columba, perhaps combined with the misappropriated veneration of Gertrude of Nivelles. The cult probably spread to Sweden from Germany. In Sweden, where Columba was not widely venerated nor Gertrud of Nivelles associated with rats, Kakwkylla appears to have been venerated more as an independent saint and less due to a confusion with other saints.
Late medieval depictions of a female saint, typically equipped with a spindle and spinning, and with rats either on the thread, on the saint or in the surroundings, are known from the Swedish churches of Film, Forssa (vanished), Harg, Kaga, Njutånger as well as possibly Viksta, and Hattula in Finland. [1] [2] [3] Some of these also have speech scrolls identifying the saint. Similar depictions are also known from Germany, including on an altarpiece in the monastery of Adelberg, Baden-Württemberg under the name Cutubilla. A woodcut from the middle of the 15th century in the Kupferstichkabinett in Berlin also depicts the saint, and may indeed be indicative of how depictions of her were spread to Sweden, using early printing techniques. [4] A large number of variations of the saint's name are known. From Sweden, the forms Kakwkylla, Kacacila, Kakitkaina, K(akuk)olla (possibly), and Katakyla (possibly) are known. From German sources, the names Cakukilla, Cutubilla (or Cutubilla von Württemberg), [5] Kakukabilla, Kakukilla and Kukakille have been identified. [1]
In a German context, the saint may have originated due to being confused with Columba, an Irish abbot and missionary to Scotland, venerated as a saint. [6] [7] His name may have been locally interpreted as a female name, and variants known from the 14th century (Columquillus) indicate that distortions similar to the known names of the Swedish-German saint existed. A medieval prayer to Columba against fire also shows similarities to one of the known prayers to Kakwkylla; the Kakwkylla prayer may be a distorted version of the prayer to Columba. [8] Furthermore, Columba is known to have been referred to also as Colum Cille, Kolumkilla and Kolumbilla during the Middle Ages. On the other hand, no known myths or legends associate Columba with rats, [6] although a legend tells that Columba made the snakes on Iona lose their venom, and he may therefore have been seen as a protector against vermin in general. [9]
Because of the lack of direct links between Columba and protection against rats, another theory posits that the saint in Germany was a mix-up with Gertrude of Nivelles, a female saint who had an association with rats and was occasionally depicted with rats as an attribute. [10] [11] Possibly, a combination of the two misunderstandings created the saint: the name was taken from Columba while the legend and patronage from Gertrude of Nivelles. [12]
From Germany the veneration of the saint most probably spread to Sweden. Just how the saint reached Sweden is unknown, though she was probably not known there before 1500. In Sweden, she seems to have been venerated as an independent saint in her own right. There is no medieval evidence that Columba was ever venerated in Sweden, and the known depictions of Gertrude of Nivelle typically depict her with another attribute; it's therefore unlikely that Kakwkylla was the result of a confusion with other saints. [13]
A manuscript from the 16th century found in Linköping (Sweden) contains two prayers directed to Kakwkylla (using that name) for protection against rats and mice. In one of them, a brief description of the saint states that she was a virgin and was eaten alive by rats and mice while imprisoned. [14] From these prayers it can also be deduced that the cult was sanctioned (at least locally) by the church, since they contain descriptions of the priest leading the mass in her honour and displaying a statue of her. [15] It is not known for how long the cult of Kakwkylla endured; in general the Reformation, begun in 1527 in Sweden, led to the end of the veneration of saints. [1] In Germany it seems to have endured longer, although it never became widespread. [15] The date of veneration of Kakwkylla was 10 March. [5] [9]

Gertrude the Great was a German Benedictine nun, mystic, and theologian. She is recognized as a saint by the Catholic Church and by The Episcopal Church. In addition to being commemorated in the Episcopal Calendar of Saints on November 19, Gertrude is inscribed in the General Roman Calendar for optional celebration throughout the Roman Rite, as a memorial on November 16.

Garde Church is a medieval church in Garde on the Swedish island of Gotland. It was built in stages during the Middle Ages. The oldest part is the nave and the base of the tower, while the most recently constructed part is the large chancel. A large renovation was carried out in the 1960s. Garde Church together with its cemetery and its four lychgates constitute one of the most well-preserved medieval church ensembles in Sweden.
Lye Church is a medieval church on Gotland, Sweden. The oldest parts of the church date from the last quarter of the 12th century, and the last major addition was the disproportionately large chancel, built during the second quarter of the 14th century by a workshop known by its notname as Egypticus. The workshop was also responsible for constructing the largest of the church portals, which is also decorated with Gothic stone sculpture. The tower portal contains sculptures attributed to the Romanesque sculptor Sigraf. The church has been little altered since the end of the Middle Ages. Lye Church contains the largest preserved set of medieval stained glass windows in the Nordic countries, and its interior is also decorated by medieval wall paintings, uncovered in the 1950s. The altarpiece is from 1496, and the church also contains a triumphal cross from the same period.
Lärbro Church is a medieval church in Lärbro on the Swedish island of Gotland. The church is located at a former strategically important spot, as testified by the adjacent fortified tower. The presently visible Gothic church replaced an earlier Romanesque church during the 13th and 14th century. The cemetery of the church contains several graves of victims from Nazi concentration camps who were taken to a field hospital in Lärbro during and after World War II.
Church murals or church wall paintings are mostly medieval paintings found in several Swedish churches. They usually adorn the vaults or walls of the buildings. In Swedish they are sometimes referred to as kalkmålningar, literally "lime paintings", since they were often painted using lime as the binding medium for the paint. The earliest church murals in Sweden date from the first decades of the 12th century and are Romanesque in style. The majority of these are found in the southern part of Sweden, where they were commissioned by members of the royalty and nobility of the time. They all have certain iconographic similarities, and for the most part, show stylistic influences from contemporary art in what is now Germany. While it is assumed that the artists who painted the murals were well-educated, and the first of them foreigners, virtually nothing is known about their identities. Around 1250, there was a stylistic shift towards Gothic that saw lighter and more airy compositions and the rising popularity of Marian and Christian mystic motifs. Early and High Gothic murals are preserved, especially on the island of Gotland, where many new churches were built at the time, and in Scania, where many older churches were equipped with new vaults which were then decorated. The earliest known names of the artists date from this time.

Fulltofta Church is a medieval church in Fulltofta, in Hörby Municipality in the province of Skåne, Sweden. It belongs to the Diocese of Lund. During the Middle Ages, the church was a local pilgrimage site for the veneration of Magnhild of Fulltofta. It contains many medieval murals, uncovered during a restoration of the church in the early 20th century.
Vinslöv Church is a medieval church in Vinslöv, Scania, Sweden. It belongs to the Church of Sweden. The church contains some of the earliest church murals in Sweden, possibly made by an artist from Lombardy.
Vä Church, sometimes also called Saint Mary's Church in Vä is a well-preserved Romanesque church in Vä, in the southern Swedish province of Scania. It belongs to the Church of Sweden and is a listed building. It was built in the early 12th century, at a time when Scania was part of Denmark. The building was commissioned by a member of the Danish royal family, probably Queen Margaret Fredkulla. The church originally consisted of a nave, a chancel with an apse and two western towers. Quite soon after being finished, it was donated to Premonstratensian monks who used it as the church of their monastery until 1213. It simultaneously functioned as the parish church of Vä. At the end of the Middle Ages, a third tower was built, and in 1593 the building was enlarged. At the beginning of the 19th century, the western towers were demolished. A major restoration was carried out in the 1960s.
