Kalidas Rangalaya is one of Bihar's well-known theatres and a center for cultural performances in Patna, India. [2] It is in the southeast corner of Gandhi Maidan [3] and is run by the Bihar Art Theater which is the regional centre of International Theatre Institute, UNESCO, Paris. [1]

History

Named after Kālidāsa, it was established on 9 October 1974 by Anil Kumar Mukherjee. [4] It is built on land given by the Government of Bihar to Bihar Art Theater to promote and pursue theatrical and cultural activities in the state capital. [1]

Overview

Today the Kalidas Rangalaya consists of a stage, auditorium, Bihar Institute of Dramatics office and a cafeteria, known as 'Annapurna'. The complex also houses Shakuntala Janta Theater, Priyambada Children's Theater, Anasuya Art Gallery and Abhyathna Guest House for artists. Classes in dance and music forms, painting, and photography are offered at the complex. [5]

It is one of the Institutes of National Importance in India. It started operating on 25 September 2012 after a series of observations by the Patna High Court. The institute operates autonomously under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Its foundation was laid by Bhairon Singh Shekhawat on 3 January 2004, during his tenure as vice-president. As of 2018, it became fully functional.

Bihta is a town and Block in Patna district, Bihar state, India. Bihta is part of Maner Assembly constituency and Pataliputra Lok Sabha constituency. It is located around 30 km (19 mi) west of Patna. Patliputra Natya Mahotsav (PNM), started in 1985, is an annual theatre festival organized in the Patna, India by the Prangan, a Cultural Organization, with the help of Union and state ministries of culture. held annually at the Kalidas Rangalaya. The first Patliputra Natya Mahotsav was held in 1985 and 2023 was its 37th edition.
