Kalinga Nandaka Indatissa PC is a Sri Lankan lawyer and former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. He is also a legal academic. He has also held public office on several occasions and has represented clients in foreign jurisdictions. Indatissa is a prolific writer. [3] [4] [5] [6]

In 2018, Indatissa was awarded for his leadership in promoting sustainable development goals, by Sri Lanka United Nations Friendship Organisation. As an act of recognition for the role has actively played, being a role model and model leader, and for his efforts in the field of law. [7]

Early life and education

Born on September 12, 1965, in Colombo, Sri Lanka. He received his early education at St. Mary's College Kegalle and Royal College Colombo. In 1982, at the age of 17, he enrolled at Sri Lanka Law College, where he excelled in his studies. Indatissa received a 1st Class pass at the 1st Year Examination and at the 3rd Year Examination. Indatissa entered the Bar in 1986.. [3] [8]

After taking oaths, Indatissa worked as a junior lawyer in various chambers, such as the chambers of Eardley Perera President’s Counsel, Tivanka Wickramasinghe President’s Counsel and D. S. Wijesinghe President’s Counsel. [3]

Following which he joined as State Counsel, at the Attorney General’s Department 1987. He entered the unofficial in 1991, and developed a practice mainly in criminal law.

He was the Junior Bar Committee - Convenor in 1988 & 1989, and was its Chairman in 1989, 1997, 1998, 2001, and 2006. He was also the Editor of the Colombo Law Society in 1991 and served as a committee member from 1990 to 1993.

In 1993 Indatissa was elected the Chairman of the Law Asia Young Lawyers Group and was a member of the Law Asia Council from 2002-2003. He was also an Executive Committee member of the Bar Association, and has held the position of Secretary.

Indatissa has also represented various clients in foreign jurisdictions. Such as Susanthika Jayasinghe in 1991 at an arbitration held by the International Athletics Association in Monaco (Regarding the Sydney Olympics), Arjuna Ranatunga (regarding a ICC match-fixing inquiry), here Indatissa acted as junior counsel to S. L. Gunasekara, Manju Wanniarachchi in both Delhi and Malaysia, and Sanath Jayasuriya for a ongoing ICC investigation by the ICC.

He also was appointed to commissions looking into the deaths of Lalith Athulathmudali, and General Denzil Kobbekaduwa.

Public office

Indatissa has held numerous positions in public office. Such as being a member of Central Environmental Authority, a trustee of the Mahapola Higher Educational Trust Fund. He also served as an Advisor for the Mahapola Professionals Organization.

A senior consultant to the Ministry of Constitutional Affairs and as an Advisor to the Ministry of Interior. He was served as a Secretary of the Mahabodhi Society of Sri Lanka from 2004-2006. In May 2010, he was appointed as a member of Sri Lanka Cricket Interim Committee. [3]

Writing career

Indatissa is known for his extensive writing on legal topics in Sri Lanka. He has authored numerous articles, and has published 46 books on a wide range of legal topics. His publications are highly regarded and widely used in the legal community. [3] [9]

A President's Counsel is an eminent lawyer who is appointed by the President of Sri Lanka as an individual "learned in the law". The term is an honorific that replaced the Queen's Counsel (QC), which Sri Lanka ceased appointing when it became a republic in 1972. It is equivalent to the appointment of a King's Counsel in the United Kingdom and other Commonwealth realms, and that of Senior Counsel in Commonwealth republics, bearing the same privileges, such as sitting within the Bar of court.

Lt. Colonel Daya Perera, PC was a Sri Lankan diplomat and lawyer, who was the Sri Lankan High Commissioner to Canada and Ambassador to the United Nations in New York City.

Deshamanya Herman Leonard de Silva, PC was a Sri Lankan lawyer and diplomat. He was the former Permanent Representative of Sri Lanka to the United Nations. He was a former President and honorary life member of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka.

Deshamanya Hector Wilfred "Harry" Jayewardene, QC was a prominent Sri Lankan lawyer. In 1979 he was chairman of a UNESCO conference on human rights in Bangkok and later chairman of the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute. He was member at the United Nations Commission on Human Rights.

Chitta Ranjan De Silva, PC was a Sri Lankan lawyer. He was Attorney General and Solicitor General of Sri Lanka. He was the Chairman of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission.

Saleem Marsoof, PC is a Sri Lankan judge and lawyer. He is a judge of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka and former President of the Court of Appeal. He is also a non-resident Justice of Appeal of the Supreme Court of Fiji.

Yasantha Kodagoda is a Puisne Justice of the Supreme Court of the Democratic Socialist Republic of Sri Lanka. He was called to the Bar as an Attorney-at-Law of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on 28 October 1988. Prior to being appointed by the President of Sri Lanka as the President of the Court of Appeal in March 2019, he served as an Additional Solicitor General of the Attorney General's Department. Prasanna Sujeewa Jayawardena, PC was a Sri Lankan judge and lawyer. He was a puisne justice of the Supreme Court of Sri Lanka.

The Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) is the Bar Association in Sri Lanka, established in 1974. The institute amalgamated the Bar Council of Sri Lanka which represented the Advocates and Law Society of Sri Lanka which represented the Proctors, following which both branches were merged into a group of practitioners called Attorneys-At-Law under the Justice Law No. 44 of 1973 . Membership is optional for any Attorney-at-law. Traditionally the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka is considered the head of the unofficial bar.

Vishtasp Kairshasp Choksy is a Sri Lankan Lawyer and advisor. He is a Civil Lawyer and appointed President's Counsel. Choksy belongs to an influential family and is the son of politician and lawyer K. N. Choksy P.C. His expertise in resolving legal disputes and issues for government organisations as well as private clients are remarkable. Choksy was one of the active members and contributed the best of his knowledge in the constitutional challenge to the dissolution of Parliament in 2018.

John Eardley Russel Perera PC was a Sri Lankan lawyer and the 2nd president of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (1977–78). He was a member of the Law Commission and the Council of Legal Education. Mr. Perera was in the first batch of President's Counsel appointed in 1981, having refused silk as a Queen's Counsel in 1967.

Saliya Pieris, PC is a Sri Lankan lawyer, and former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka. Pieris is an Eisenhower Fellow. He is also an alumnus of the Dealing with the Past (DwP) Programme, Switzerland and IVLP, USA. He began his career as a prosecutor in the Attorney General’s Department. Later, he served as the First Chairman of the Office on Missing Persons from February 2018 to September 2020, which was created as part of Sri Lanka's reconciliation mechanism. Additionally, he was also a Member of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka between October 2015 and March 2018.
