Kalo Bhramar (The Black Wasp) is an epic Bengali detective novel. This is the first detective story introducing detective Kiriti Roy by Nihar Ranjan Gupta. [1] The book was written in 1930's and parted into 4 volumes and in 1963, Mitra And Ghosh Publishers published the book. [2]

Synopsis

Kalo Bhramar is a take name of one genius doctor Mr. Sanyal. But he was a serial killer. He became criminal in the eye of law due to the circumstances but he has a Robinhood type image among the poor people. He commits serial killing and each time flees from the hand of British police. Mysterious Kalo Bhramar challenges famous Detective Kriti Roy and his assistant Subrato. They tries to catch him up and move to Burma. A long running cat and mouse game begins.

Film adaptation

In 2016, a Bengali language thriller film Kiriti O Kalo Bhromor was released loosely following this novel. [3] [4] The film was directed by Anindya Bikas Datta. Indraneil Sengupta and Kaushik Sen played the role of Kiriti Roy and Kalo Bhramar respectively. [5] [6] [7]

Nihar Ranjan Gupta

Nihar Ranjan Gupta was an Indian dermatologist and a popular Bengali novelist. He is the creator of the fictional detective character Kiriti Roy. Some of his writings were made into films of Bengal and Bollywood.

Kiriti Roy is a fictional detective of Bengali literature created by Dr. Nihar Ranjan Gupta. The first story introduces him as follows: "Kiriti Roy is six and a half feet tall, fair and stout. His curled hair is mostly combed back, and the black celluloid spectacles make his clean-shaven face highly attractive." In his own words, "In this universe, virtue and sin reside in parallel. The film was based on Angti Chattujjer Vai, a Bengali short story of Manoj Basu. Shyamsundar Ghosh composed the music for the film. The movie was remade in Hindi in 1969 as Rahgir.
