Kalpabiswa is an online Bengali language science fiction literary magazine. [3] It is the first and biggest online sci-fi magazine published in Bengali language. [4] [5] Notable Bengali fiction writers like Adrish Bardhan, Ranen Ghosh, Yashodhara Ray Chaudhuri, Anish Deb and Amitananda Das have contributed for the magazine.

From 2017, Kalpabiswa started to publish E-books of notable Bengali language books as well as the magazine itself. [6] From 2018, Kalpabiswa started its own Hardboard and Paperback publishing house named Kalpabiswa Publication. With the 200 years of creation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Kalpabiswa has published Frankenstein 200, an anthology of Frankenstein themed fictions and non fictions, as a tribute. [7] The book was launched at the campus of Jadavpur University during the first International Conference on science fiction held in Kolkata. [8] [9]

Kalpabiswa has published Bengali translations of notable authors like Jules Verne, Herbert George Wells, Howard Phillips Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, [15] Arthur C. Clarke and many more classic science fiction masters. They have also translated more contemporary authors like Philip K. Dick, Elizabeth Bear and Cixin Liu.

Aschorjyo and Bismoy Science fiction awards

From 2023, Kalpabiswa Publication and Pratisruti are sponsoring the only science fiction awards in Bengali. The Aschorjyo award, given for considerable contribution to Kalpabigyan is given by Kalpabiswa. The Bismoy science fiction award is given to the best newcomer in the field of Kalpabigyan by Pratisruti. [16]

Manohar Aich was an Indian bodybuilder. He was the second Indian to win any Mr. Universe title. He did so in the 1952 NABBA Universe Championships. At 4 feet 11 inches (1.50 m) tall, he was given the name "Pocket Hercules". Aich has been cited by historians as an influence on Indian physical culture.

Globe Cinema was a single screen cinema hall and heritage building located in Lindsay Street, Kolkata, West Bengal, India. The theatre was previously known as Old Opera House. The wooden opera house was established in 1827 and sold to E M Cohen in 1906. Cohen converted it into a movie theatre and named it Globe Cinema. The theatre was owned by Sidhwa family and Jal Tata. Dhansri Abasan Pvt Ltd partnered with Goldstar Enclave Pvt Ltd and acquired the Globe Theatre Pvt Ltd from them.

The Bengali Language Movement of Manbhum was a cultural and political movement that took place in the then Bihar Province from 1912 to 1956. Post independence, between 1948 and 1956, the language movement spread intensely among the Bengalis of Manbhum. Through this movement created around the Bengali language, the public demand for the establishment of Bengali as one of the official languages of the Bihar, mainly Manbhum, was expressed. It was launched as a broadsheet daily newspaper with a motive to enter into a head-to-head competition with Anandabazar Patrika. It is owned and published by Bennett, Coleman & Co. Ltd. which is owned by the Sahu Jain family. At present it is owen by Tidings Media & Communications Pvt Ltd.

<i>Biley</i> (drama)

Biley or Bilay is a 2012 Bengali drama created by Bengali theatre group Lokkrishti, This is a dramatisation of the life and works of Swami Vivekananda. Debshankar Haldar played the lead role. Phalguni Chattopadhyay directed this drama and Ujjwal Chattopadhyay was the playwright.

Dakhal is a 1981 Indian Bengali film directed by Gautam Ghose, with Mamata Shankar, Robin Sen Gupta, Sunil Mukherjee and Sujal Roy Chowdhury in lead roles. The film is about a woman belonging to a nomadic tribe from Andhra Pradesh, known as crow hunters, who elopes and moves to south Bengal and makes a living by occult practices. It deals with the issue of exploitation of tribal people by a deceitful landlord. The film was based on Amma, a short story of Sushil Jana.

Nisith Ranjan Ray(19 November, 1910 – 7 September,1994) was an Indian historian, social activist and the founder of the Society for Preservation, Calcutta, an organisation working for the preservation of the cultural heritage of Kolkata.

Adrish Bardhan was a Bengali science fiction writer, editor and translator.

Jagtai Choudhury Bari is the residential house of the erstwhile zamindar family based in Jagtai of Murshidabad district in West Bengal, India. The Choudhury estate was established by Rani Gaurangini Devi in the 18th century in British-occupied India. The first zamindar of this family was Babu Keshto Mohun Choudhury. The last zamindar of Jagtai was Shri Sailendranath Choudhury until the abolition of zamindars by the West Bengal State Acquisition and Tenancy Act of 1950.
