Kalpabiswa is an online Bengali language science fiction literary magazine. [3] It is the first and biggest online sci-fi magazine published in Bengali language. [4] [5] It is the main Bengali sci-fi web magazine. [6] [7] [8] Notable Bengali fiction writers like Adrish Bardhan, Ranen Ghosh, Yashodhara Ray Chaudhuri, Anish Deb and Amitananda Das have contributed for the magazine.

From 2017, Kalpabiswa started to publish E-books of notable Bengali language books as well as the magazine itself. [9] From 2018, Kalpabiswa started its own Hardboard and Paperback publishing house named Kalpabiswa Publication. With the 200 years of creation of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, Kalpabiswa has published Frankenstein 200, an anthology of Frankenstein themed fictions and non fictions, as a tribute. [10] The book was launched at the campus of Jadavpur University during the first International Conference on science fiction held in Kolkata. [11] [12]

Aschorjyo and Bismoy Science fiction awards

From 2023, Kalpabiswa Publication and Pratisruti are sponsoring the only science fiction awards in Bengali. The Aschorjyo award, given for considerable contribution to Kalpabigyan is given by Kalpabiswa. The Bismoy science fiction award is given to the best newcomer in the field of Kalpabigyan by Pratisruti. [18]

Yashodhara Ray Chaudhuri is a poet residing in Kolkata, West Bengal, India. She produced collections of Bengali poetry. She was awarded the Krittibas Puraskar in 1998 by the Krittibas Patrika.

The genre of science fiction has been prevalent in the Indian film industry since the second half of the 20th century. Beginning in 1952, the Tamil film Kaadu was made, which was an Indian-American co-production. The 1963 Tamil film Kalai Arasi, 1965 Telugu film Dorikithe Dongalu, and 1967 Hindi film Chand Par Chadayee also have science fiction in their storyline. The Alien was a science fiction film under production in the late 1960s which was eventually cancelled. The film was being directed by Bengali Indian director Satyajit Ray and produced by Hollywood studio Columbia Pictures. The script was written by Ray in 1967, based on "Bankubabur Bandhu", a Bengali story he had written in 1962 for Sandesh, the Ray family magazine.

Barun Sengupta, the founder-editor of Bartaman newspaper, was a Bengali journalist and popular political critic. He is remembered for his bold and simple diction of political analysing that made him extremely well liked among the common readers in West Bengal.

Raghab Bandyopadhyay was an Indian Bengali prose writer and columnist.

<i>Didi No. 1</i> Television series

Didi No. 1 is a Bengali television game show for women launched in 2010. The show airs on Zee Bangla six days a week and also available on ZEE5 digitally. It is the second longest-running Bengali television series by episode count.

Reba Rakshit was an Indian bodybuilder and exponent of yoga who was a pupil of Bishnu Charan Ghosh at the College of Physical Culture in Kolkata and specialized in withstanding heavy weights upon her body. She would let fully loaded cars or elephants pass over her body. She was the first Indian woman to lift an elephant upon her chest.

Nisith Ranjan Ray was an Indian historian, social activist and the founder of the Society for Preservation, Calcutta, an organisation working for the preservation of the cultural heritage of Kolkata.

Koushik Kar is an Indian Bengali actor, theatre director. He started his professional acting in the year 2010 as a Minerva Repertory Theatre actor, in kolkata. His first performance was in the play Raja Lear (2010) in which the celebrated Bengali actor Soumitra Chatterjee was in the lead. His work Ma Ak Nirbhik Sainik (2013) as a director and actor was officially selected in 17th Bharat Rang Mahotsav, 2015. His direction and acting in various plays over the years rendered him as a well known theatre personality in contemporary Bengali theatre community and audiences.

Chalchitra is a part of Bengal Patachitra. It referred to the Debi Chal or Durga chala, the background of the Durga Pratima or idol. Originally, these were used to give a proper proportion to the structure. This tradition is very ancient and is still maintained.

Prafulla Kumar De Sarkar [Bengali language প্রফুল্লকুমার দে সরকার] (1892–1974), was a teacher, English grammarian, and author. His A Text Book of Higher English Grammar, Composition and Translation, first published in 1926, continues to be used as a textbook among Bengali students learning English.

Adrish Bardhan was a Bengali science fiction writer, editor and translator.

Bibhash Chakraborty is an Indian Bengali actor and theatre personality. He is also a social activist. He is a prolific writer too. He was associated with Paschim Banga Natya Akademi for many years.

Aay Tobe Sohochori is a 2021 Indian Bengali language television series that premiered on 13 September 2021 on Star Jalsha and it also available on the digital platform Disney+ Hotstar. The show is produced by Sahana Dutta of Missing Crew Productions and stars Koneenica Banerjee and Arunima Haldar.

Pradyut Barman was an Indian footballer, known for his goalkeeping brilliance. He was part of the team that won the gold medal at the 1962 Asian Games at Jakarta. He played for Eastern Railway and Mohun Bagan in domestic tournaments.
