Kanengo is a township located in the northern part of Lilongwe, the capital city of Malawi. It is situated approximately 10 kilometers north of the city center. [1] [2]

History

Establishment

Kanengo was established in the 1960s as a residential area for low- to middle-income families. During the colonial era, it was a small settlement for African civil servants and businessmen. After Malawi gained independence in 1964, Kanengo experienced rapid growth and development, becoming a hub for commercial and social activities. [3] [4] [5]

Joy Nathu is a Malawian radio DJ, producer, broadcaster and presenter. He won his first UMP Award in 2016 as the DJ of the year. In 2017 and 2018, Nathu also won the same awards and category. He won Radio DJ and Personality of the Year in 2019.

Chiyanjano Muheziwa popularly known as Annie Matumbi, and sometimes Nyakwawa, is a Malawian veteran musician, tv presenter, actor and politician. In 2017, Matumbi claimed he was the father of Malawi urban music. National Association for People living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi(NAPHAM) is a Malawian non-governmental member-based organization founded in 1993 aiming at providing a forum for people living with HIV/AIDS in Malawi to share their experiences and find solutions to solve them. The organization was found with an intention to minimised discrimination against people living with HIV/AIDS as at the time people were stigmatized and treated as outcasts when diagnosed with HIV/AIDS.

Simama Hotel is a hotel located in Lilongwe, Malawi. It is the country's biggest and most notable hotel after the Sun Bird chain of hotels. The hotel provides facilities and services for the local and middle class business, as well as leisure travelers. The hotel was launched by the Minister of Information, Civic Education and Tourism, Jappie Mhango. The building cost up to MK3.6.

Abraham John Simama is a Malawian preacher and businessman. He is the chairman of the Simama group of companies. Noel Chikoleka better known by his stage name Phyzix, is a Malawian musician, rapper, songwriter and activist. He gained national recognition in 2006 when he released the song titled "Cholapitsa" (boogeyman) which sold over 40, 000 copies national wide within a month and has released over 6 albums. In 2020, he won a UMP Award in Best Hip Hop artist of the year.

Geoffrey Kapusa was a veteran Malawian television and radio broadcaster and presenter. He was known to have started a television music show called 'Malawi Music Splash' programme on Malawi's MBC state television in early 2000s. He was known as Mr. Splash as a result of his flagship TV music show. Kapusa worked for Malawi Broadcasting Cooperation (MBC) before a brief stint with Times Group.

Chifuniro Steven Magalasi, best professionally known as Eli Njuchi, is a Malawian singer and songwriter. In 2018, he won a UMP Award in Best New Act. In 2019, he won another UMP award as the best male of the year.

Vitumbiko Chisoni, best known as Pop Young, is a Malawian Afro-Pop musician and songwriter. In 2022, he won a Mzuzu Music Award as the best male artist of the year. Chisoni's most popular songs include "Collect," "Mesa," "Sole," and "Story," among others that brought him popularity and recognition national wide.

Chikangawa is a residential and industrial town located in the Mzimba District of Malawi, in the Northern Region. The town has a rich history dating back to the pre-colonial era, when it was a small village inhabited by the Tumbuka people. Chitumbuka is the predominat language spoken in the area.

Lilongwe Central Prison is a prison in Malawi located in Lilongwe District established during the colonial era. Lilongwe Central Prison has a maximum capacity of approximately 2,500 inmates, although it often holds more due to overcrowding. The prison population consists of male and female inmates, including those on remand and convicted prisoners.

Area 9 is a township located in the capital city of Lilongwe, Malawi. Area 9 is situated in the heart of Lilongwe, approximately 3 kilometers from the city center. It is bordered by the Lilongwe River to the north and the Area 10 township to the south.
