Kanta Nalawade was a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council and a member of Bharatiya Janata Party. [1] She is Vice President of the state unit of the party and a member of national working committee. [2] She started her career as a party worker in the Jan Sangh together with her husband Jaisinghrao Nalawade and became the BJP's national secretary in 2000. She comes from a farmers' family in Arale village in Satara. [3]
Shiv Sena (1966–2022) was a right-wing Marathi regionalist Hindutva-based political party in India founded in 1966 by Bal Thackeray, who was later succeeded by Uddhav Thackeray. The party is split into two parties: the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena which has a new symbol of Mashaal (Torch) and Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena (2022–present) which has gotten hold of the original party name and the "bow and arrow" symbol.

From 2016 to 2021, she served as the 16th Governor of Manipur.

Prior to her appointment as the chief minister, she also served as the Minister of Education, P.W.D, Culture and Tourism in the Delhi Government. Previously, she served as advisor to the former Deputy Chief Minister of Delhi, Manish Sisodia, primarily on education, from July 2015 to 17 April 2018. Atishi is one of only two women currently serving as a chief minister in India, along with Mamata Banerjee of West Bengal.
