Karel Candael (Antwerp, 4 September 1883 – Rotterdam, 27 March 1948) was a Belgian composer, music teacher, and conductor.
Karel Candael studied at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp with Jan Blockx, Emile Wambach, Jozef Tilborghs and Lodewijk Mortelmans. After finishing his education, Candael became a very active member of the local choir- and song movement and found the choir De Zangkapel. In 1909 he was appointed as second conductor at the Royal Flemish Opera. Two years later, he became conductor of the Koninklijke Nederlandse Schouwburg of Antwerp. As of 1930, he also conducted the Casino Concerts of Knokke.
As a teacher, Candael worked at the Royal Conservatoire of Antwerp. After teaching music in Antwerp schools during the First World War, he became a teacher of solfège at this conservatory. In 1934, he was promoted to teacher of counterpoint and fugue.
Candael is best known as a composer: among others, he wrote ballets titled De zeven hoofdzonden (1927) and Het Hooglied (1936), and the oratorio Het Marialeven (1941–1943). Het Marialeven was based on a text by Candael's friend Maurice Gilliams. This composition was made into a movie by BRT.
Karel Husa was a Czech-born classical composer and conductor, winner of the 1969 Pulitzer Prize for Music and 1993 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for Music Composition. In 1954, he immigrated to the United States and became an American citizen in 1959.

His repertoire extended from Viennese classics through French composers to 20th century works. Although much of his career was spent in France, he was the first French conductor at Bayreuth in 1955; he also conducted The Ring and Parsifal at La Scala.

Lodewijk Mortelmans was a Belgian composer and conductor of Flemish ancestry. Sometimes called de Vlaamse Brahms, Mortelmans composed in a number of forms, including piano music and orchestral works, but he was most celebrated in his day for his art songs. Beginning in 1899, he often set the poetry of the priest Guido Gezelle. His opera De Kinderen van Zee was first produced in 1920 at the Vlaamse Opera.
Paul Spicer is an English composer, conductor, and organist. He taught choral conducting at the Royal College of Music and conducted the RCM Chamber Choir between 1995 and 2008. He currently teaches conducting at the Royal Birmingham Conservatoire and conducts their chamber choir which records for Somm Records. He also teaches at Oxford and Durham universities. Since 2004 he has been the conductor of the Petersfield Festival. He was Senior Producer for BBC Radio 3 for the Midlands Region based in Birmingham between 1984 and 1990 after which he moved to be Artistic Director of the Lichfield Festival. He also produced for various record companies over many years. He founded the Finzi Singers in 1984 making many recordings for Chandos Records. He conducts the Birmingham Bach Choir and the Whitehall Choir in London. His compositions include two oratorios for Easter and for Advent with libretti by the Dr Tom Wright and a choral symphony 'Unfinished Remembering' (2014) to a libretto by Euan Tait commemorating the outbreak of World War 1. He runs a series of choral courses under the banner of The English Choral Experience based mainly at Abbey Dore in Herefordshire.

During his career, he worked as a composer, a music critic, a teacher, an inspector of music education of the state schools of Antwerp, and as a director. He led the musical academies of Mons and Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and taught harmony at the Brussels Conservatory. He also directed the Grisar-choir and was part of the musical organisation of the World's Fair of 1885.

The orchestra is led by chief conductor Elim Chan and honorary conductor Philippe Herreweghe. The organisation, which is one of the seven art institutions of the Flemish Community, is one of the most important cultural representatives in the region.
