Karmenu Vella KOM (born 19 June 1950) is a Maltese politician and former member of the European Commission,in charge of Environment,Maritime Affairs and Fisheries between 2014 and 2019. He has been one of the longest serving Maltese Parliamentarian with the Maltese Labour Party. He was appointed Companion of the National Order of Merit of Malta in 2019. [1]
Vella was born on 19 June 1950,in Zurrieq and is the eldest of three children. Vella lived in Zurrieq for 33 years from 1950 till 1983. He now lives in Birzebbugia with his wife Marianne (née Buhagiar). The couple has two sons,John married to Miriam Dalli,and Philip married to Rania (née Mamo). He is also a grandfather of two,Adam and Jack. [2]
After his primary education in Zurrieq and his secondary education at the Lyceum Secondary School,Vella attended his pre-tertiary education at the University of Malta's Junior College until 1968. [3]
Karmenu Vella attended the Royal University of Malta where he was conferred with a Bachelor of Arts in Architectural Studies in 1970,and then graduated as an Architect and Civil Engineer in 1973. [3]
Between 1998 and 2000 he studied at Sheffield Hallam University where he was awarded a Master of Science degree in Tourism. [3]
Karmenu Vella has had a long and distinguished service in the Labour Party of Malta.
He started with the Labour Party in 1968 as a member of the National Executive Committee of the Labour Youth Movement and later a member of the International Union of Socialist Youth (IUSY). [3]
More recently,apart from being a member on the Labour Party's National Executive,Karmenu Vella held the post of Member and Group Co-ordinator for the Labour Party Parliamentary Group. In 2011 he was in charge of the electoral programme for the Maltese Labour Party for the 2013 general elections. [3]
In 1968,at the age of 18,Karmenu Vella was elected as the youngest member of the Zurrieq Civic Council and served as such until 1970. [3]
In 1976 he contested the general elections for the first time and was elected as the youngest Member of Parliament and since then served as Maltese Parliamentarian for thirty eight uninterrupted years as a Labour Member of Parliament.
During his Parliamentary term in government,Vella has been nominated Minister four times during the Labour Party Government. He was Minister for Public Works between 1981 and 1984,Minister for Industry from 1984 to 1987,Minister for Tourism between 1996 and 1998 and was again appointed as Tourism Minister in March 2013 until his nomination as EU Commissioner Designate in 2014.
During his Parliamentary term in opposition,he served as Shadow Minister for Tourism from 1998 to 2011 and between 2011 and 2013 was a Shadow Minister for Finance. [3]
During his professional career,Karmenu Vella has held a number of managerial and directorship posts.
In 1973 he started his own private practice as an Architect and Civil Engineer,and during that same year he was appointed a director until 1976 on Mid Med Bank - Malta. [3]
In 1974 he joined the Libyan Arab Maltese Holding Company as its Managing Director until 1981. During that period he also served as a director on a number of the company's subsidiaries which included:Mediterranean Aviation Co Ltd.,Medelec Switchgear Co Ltd.,Mediterranean Power Electric Co Ltd.,Rotos Zirayia Pumps Co Ltd.,and Plastic Processing Co Ltd. In 2001 he was appointed executive chairman of Corinthia Hotels International until 2007 and then executive chairman of Corinthia's Mediterranean Construction Co Ltd.,until 2010. [3]
In 2010 he joined Betfair Group Ltd. as a director and sat on SMS-Mondial Travel Group's Board as chairman until 2013. [3]
In 2015 Vella had launched the Pan-European Dialogue for Cruise Tourism. [4]
In 2007 Karmenu Vella was the founding chairman of the Maltese Turkish Business Council. Between 2007 and 2013 he was appointed a member of the Vodafone Malta Foundation. [5]
Karmenu has been very active in sports and cultural activities. He has been for a number of years the Honorary President for Birzebbugia Aquatic Sports Club,Honorary President for Zurrieq Bocci Club and Honorary President for Queen Victoria Band Club,Zurrieq. [3]
Vella was appointed Companion of the National Order of Merit in the 2019 Republic Day awards by President George Vella,in recognition of his service to the country. [6]
The politics of Malta takes place within a framework of a parliamentary representative democratic republic,whereby the president of Malta is the constitutional head of state. Executive authority is vested in the president of Malta,with the general direction and control of the Government of Malta remaining with the prime minister of Malta,who is the head of government and the cabinet. Legislative power is vested in the Parliament of Malta,which consists of the president of Malta and the unicameral House of Representatives of Malta with the speaker as the presiding officer of the legislative body. Judicial power remains with the chief justice and the judiciary of Malta. Since independence,the party electoral system has been dominated by the Christian democratic Nationalist Party and the social democratic Labour Party.
Malta has been inhabited since 5900 BC. The first inhabitants were farmers;their agricultural methods degraded the soil until the islands became uninhabitable. The islands were repopulated around 3850 BC by a civilization that at its peak built the Megalithic Temples,which today are among the oldest surviving buildings in the world. Their civilization collapsed in around 2350 BC;the islands were repopulated by Bronze Age warriors soon afterwards.
Dominic Mintoff was a Maltese socialist politician,architect,and civil engineer who was leader of the Labour Party from 1949 to 1984,and was 8th Prime Minister of Malta from 1955 to 1958,when Malta was still a British colony,and again,following independence,from 1971 to 1984. His tenure as Prime Minister saw the creation of a comprehensive welfare state,nationalisation of large corporations,a substantial increase in the general standard of living and the establishment of the Maltese republic,but was later on marred by a stagnant economy,a rise in authoritarianism and outbreaks of political violence.
Edoardo "Eddie" Fenech Adami is a Maltese politician and Nationalist politician who served as the prime minister of Malta from 1987 until 1996,and again from 1998 until 2004. Subsequently,he was the seventh president of Malta from 2004 to 2009. He led his party to win four general elections,in 1987,1992,1998 and 2003,as well as the majority of votes in 1981. Staunchly pro-European,Fenech Adami was fundamental for Malta's accession to the European Union.
The Labour Party,formerly known as the Malta Labour Party,is one of the two major political parties in Malta,along with the Nationalist Party. It sits on the centre-left of the political spectrum.
Lawrence Gonzi is a Maltese politician,retired Nationalist politician and lawyer,who served for twenty-five years in various critical roles in Maltese politics. Gonzi was Prime Minister of Malta from 2004 to 2013,and leader of the Nationalist Party. He also served as speaker of the House from 1988 to 1996,and Minister of Social Policy from 1998 to 2004,as well as Deputy Prime Minister from 1999 to 2004. He served in practically all positions in Parliament,being also Leader of the House,an MP and Leader of the Opposition.
Alfred Sant,is a Maltese politician and a novelist. He led the Labour Party from 1992 to 2008 and served as Prime Minister of Malta between 1996 and 1998 and as Leader of the Opposition from 1992 to 1996 and from 1998 to 2008. Sant is an established writer and playwright and has published several books.
Louis Grech is a Maltese politician who served as Deputy Prime Minister of Malta,as well as Minister of European Affairs. He also served as Deputy Leader for Parliamentary Affairs of the Labour Party. He currently serves as consultant to the Prime Minister Robert Abela and attends Cabinet.
Joseph Muscat is a Maltese politician who served as the 13th prime minister of Malta from 2013 to 2020 and leader of the Labour Party from 2008 to 2020.

Before being appointed Foreign Affairs Minister he served as Chair of the Parliamentary Foreign Affairs Committee. Prior to entering politics,Francis Zammit Dimech worked as a lawyer and broadcaster.
Lorry Sant was a Maltese activist,trade unionist and Malta Labour Party politician who held a number of ministerial offices between 1971 and 1987. Sant was a controversial figure who had an aggressive leadership approach. In the 1980s he was involved in incidents of political violence,and he has been held responsible for violating the human rights of his employees.
Stefan Zrinzo Azzopardi is a Maltese politician. He serves as Minister of Public Works and Planning in Prime Minister Robert Abela’s cabinet. He was first elected Member of Parliament for the 5th Electoral District in 2017.
