Kathleen Kay Treseder is an American ecologist who specializes in the interplay between global climate change and fungal ecology. She also serves as a member of the Irvine City Council after being elected to the position in 2022. [1] She is currently a professor in the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California,Irvine. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, [2] the American Academy of Microbiology, [3] and the Ecological Society of America. [4]
As an undergraduate she co-authored a research paper [5] that was published in Nature and was featured on the cover of the issue. Since then,Treseder has published over 90 peer-reviewed scientific papers that have been cited over 19,000 times. [6]
Treseder graduated from the University of Utah in 1994 with an Honors Bachelors of Science in biology with a minor in chemistry. [7] She obtained her Ph.D. in biological sciences from Stanford University in 1999,her dissertation title was “Plant-soil interactions across a fertility gradient in Hawaii :nutrient acquisition strategies and effects of genetic variation on ecosystem function”and her primary advisor was Peter Morrison Vitousek. [8] [9] She was a postdoctoral fellow at the University of California,Riverside, from 1999 to 2000. She was an assistant professor in the Department of Biology at the University of Pennsylvania from 2001 to 2003,before moving to the Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology at the University of California,Irvine in 2003. She became an associate professor in 2006,and a full professor in 2011.
Treseder was an integral part of the initial anti-sexual harassment initiative in UC Irvine and continues to be a strong proponent for gender equality and safe working spaces in STEM,often using #STEMtoo on social media platforms. [10]
Beginning in November 2017,Treseder along with 3 other identified members of the School of Biology,Jessica Pratt,Benedicte Shipley, and Michelle Herrera, filed official complaints of sexual harassment against Francisco Ayala,an evolutionary biologist, eventually leading to Ayala’s termination with the university. [11] [12]
Treseder was sworn in as a board member of the Orange County Power Authority on January 17 2023. [13]
Treseder was a Chancellor's Fellow at the University of California,Irvine from 2012 to 2015. In 2015,she was chosen as a United States Representative for the publication "Young Women Scientists:A Bright Future for the Americas [14] ",2015,InterAmerica Network of Academies of Sciences
Francisco JoséAyala Pereda was a Spanish-American evolutionary biologist and philosopher who was a longtime faculty member at the University of California,Irvine, and University of California,Davis.
David Arthur Eppstein is an American computer scientist and mathematician. He is a distinguished professor of computer science at the University of California,Irvine. He is known for his work in computational geometry, graph algorithms, and recreational mathematics. In 2011,he was named an ACM Fellow.
Fellowship of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (FAAAS) is an honor accorded by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) to distinguished persons who are members of the Association. Fellows are elected annually by the AAAS Council for "efforts on behalf of the advancement of science or its applications [which] are scientifically or socially distinguished".
The School of Biological Sciences is one of the academic units of the University of California,Irvine (UCI). The school is divided into four departments:developmental and cell biology, ecology and evolutionary biology, molecular biology and biochemistry, and neurobiology and behavior. With over 3,700 students it is in the top four largest schools in the university. It is consistently ranked in the top one hundred in U.S. News &World Report’s yearly list of best graduate schools.
Himla (Himladevi) Soodyall is a South African geneticist involved in finding some of the oldest human genetic lines, mainly focusing on Sub-Saharan Africa. Her work on DNA has pointed to southern Africa as the most likely geographic region of origin of the human species.
John Charles Avise is an American evolutionary geneticist, conservationist, natural historian, and prolific science author. He is an Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Ecology &Evolution,University of California,Irvine, and was previously a Distinguished Professor of Genetics at the University of Georgia.

He is recognized for seminal discoveries in the fields of cancer, immunology, and gene therapy.
Johanna Schmitt is an evolutionary ecologist and plant geneticist. Her research is notable for its focus on the genetic basis of traits in ecologically valuable plants and on predicting how such plants will respond and adapt to environmental change such as climate warming. She has authored over 100 articles and her works have been cited over 7900 citations. She is honored with being the first female scientist at Brown University to be elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
