Meru County is one of the 47 counties of Kenya. It borders Isiolo County to the north, Tharaka-Nithi County to the east, Nyeri County to the southwest and Laikipia County to the west. The home of the Meru people, Meru County has a population of 1.35 million people.

Bernard Mate was a Kenyan politician and one of the first group of Africans to be elected to the Legislative Council of Kenya (LegCo), the legislative arm of government in the British Colony of Kenya, representing what was the black constituency of Central Kenya. He served three terms in the LegCo until he lost his seat in 1979. He died on 6 January 1994, after a short illness. As a politician, he was part of the KADU's delegation to the Lancaster House conferences, which set the framework for Kenyan independence. He was described by Oginga Odinga as a philosopher.

Beatrice Elachi is a Kenyan politician who currently serves as the member of parliament for Dagoretti North constituency. Prior, she served as Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly from 6 September 2017 until her resignation on 11 August 2020. As Speaker of the Nairobi County Assembly, she replaced Alex Ole Magelo, who did not contest his seat. Immediately prior to her election, she was the Majority Whip in the Kenya Senate.
David Karithi is a Kenyan politician and a member of the 11th parliament of Kenya elected from Tigania West Constituency in Meru County on the ticket of The National Alliance (TNA) in 2013. He served on the house committee on Health. In 2015, Mzalendo Trust rated Karithi one of the 27 “lazy” MPs who did not contribute to debates or made any speech in the parliament throughout the year (2015). According to Mzalendo Trust, Karithi made a total of 34 speeches during the session of the 11th parliament from 2013 to 2016.
