Puttalam is well known for its picturesque lagoons, popular for shallow sea fishing and prawn farming activities. The town of Kalpitiya, and the Kalpitiya Peninsula, is located in this district.
Kattankudy is a township near the city of Batticaloa on the eastern coast of Sri Lanka. The town is predominantly populated by Muslims.
The Kattankudy Mosque Massacre was the killing of over 147 Muslim men and boys on 3 August, 1990. Around 30 armed Tamil militants raided two mosques in Kattankudy where over 300 people were prostrating in Isha prayers. The Sri Lankan government, survivors, and observers accuse the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) of committing the crime. The LTTE denied involvement and never retracted the denial.

The school was established on 6 January 1930, by former education minister, CWW Kannangara, who additionally founded two other colleges located in central Ceylon. Kattankudy Central College is the first Muslim Central College in Sri Lanka.
Kattankudy Urban Council (KUC) is the local authority for the town of Kattankudy in eastern Sri Lanka. KUC is responsible for providing a variety of local public services including roads, sanitation, drains, housing, libraries, public parks and recreational facilities. It has 9 members elected using the open list proportional representation system.

President of Sri Lanka Maithripala Sirisena banned National Thowheed Jamath on 27 April 2019 and designated it as a terrorist organisation along with Jammiyathul Millathu Ibrahim.
