Katy Abbott

Katy Abbott (born 1971) is an Australian composer. Abbott writes music for orchestra, chamber ensemble and voice. Her work reflects her interests in contemporary Australian cultures and often explores notions of home, place, humour and connection. [1]

Biography

Abbott's compositions have been broadcast and performed in the UK, Europe, Asia and the US and featured in Australian and International music festivals including the International Alliance for Women in Music (IAWM) conference in Beijing [2] the International Rostrum of Composers in Wroclaw, Poland, [3] and the Melbourne, Perth and Canberra International Festivals.

Abbott studied with Stuart Greenbaum, Brenton Broadstock and Linda Kouvaras at University of Melbourne, where she completed her PhD in 2007. [4]

Several of Abbott's compositions have appeared on the syllabus of Australian Music Examinations Board and ANZCA. [1] Her compositions are published by Reed Music, [5] Promethean Editions (NZ), [6] the Australian Music Centre [1] and Morton Music. [7]

Abbott has released five solo albums; Sunburnt Aftertones: The Chamber Music of Katy Abbott (Move Records), The Domestic Sublime: The Vocal Music of Katy Abbott (ABC Classics), Famous (ABC Classics), Punch: The Brass Music of Katy Abbott (ABC Classics) and The Peasant Prince (ABC Classics with Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra (TSO) and Li Cunxin). Abbott is currently based in Melbourne and holds the post of senior lecturer in music (composition) at Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne. [8]

Andrew Schultz is an acclaimed Australian classical composer. A musician with a large and widely performed output and an international sphere of activity he has, since 2008, lived in Sydney, New South Wales. The earliest western musical influences in Australia can be traced to two distinct sources: in the first settlements, the large body of convicts, soldiers and sailors who brought the traditional folk music of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland; and the first free settlers, some of whom had been exposed to the European classical music tradition in their upbringing. An example of original music by a convict would be an 1861 tune dedicated to settler James Gordon by fiddler constable Alexander Laing. Very little music has survived from this early period, although there are samples of music originating from Sydney and Hobart that date back to the early 19th century.
