Kelvin Glare AO , APM (born 6 January 1938 in Hopetoun,Victoria) is a former Australian police officer,who was Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police from 1987 to 1992. [1]
After he retired Glare was employed by Argyle Diamonds to look into the case of stolen pink diamonds. He was unable to retrieve any pink diamonds from Europe but was involved in investigating how Western Australia Police had approached their theft which culminated in a discussion of possible corrupt or criminal conduct by police at the Kennedy Royal Commission. The Faraday School kidnapping occurred on 6 October 1972 at a one-teacher school in the rural town of Faraday in Victoria,Australia,where two plasterers,Edwin John Eastwood and Robert Clyde Boland,kidnapped six female pupils and their teacher for a $1,000,000 ransom. The Victorian government claimed it would pay the ransom. The victims escaped and the criminals were captured,tried and convicted. Eastwood escaped and later kidnapped a teacher and nine pupils. He was again captured,convicted and sentenced. While in prison,Eastwood strangled convicted rapist Glen Davies in what was ruled self-defence. He was eventually released,having served his sentence.

The theft of The Weeping Woman from the National Gallery of Victoria took place on 2 August 1986 in Melbourne,Victoria,Australia. The stolen work was one of a series of paintings by Pablo Picasso all known as The Weeping Woman and had been purchased by the gallery for A$1.6 million in 1985—at the time the highest price paid by an Australian art gallery for an artwork. A group calling itself "Australian Cultural Terrorists" claimed responsibility,making a number of demands in letters to the then-Victorian Minister for the Arts,Race Mathews. The demands included increases to funding for the arts;threats were made that the painting would be destroyed. After an anonymous tip-off to police,the painting was found undamaged in a locker at Spencer Street railway station on 19 August 1986. The theft still remains unsolved.
