Kelin Jo Kuhn is an American electronics engineer known for her work on process variation and scale reduction, particularly in CMOS electronics. She is an adjunct professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Cornell University. [1]
Kuhn graduated in 1980 from the University of Washington, with a bachelor's degree in electrical engineering. She went to Stanford University for graduate study, earning a master's degree and then completing her Ph.D. in 1985. [1] In her doctoral work and her early academic career, she was a laser engineer; her dissertation, Research and Development of a High Average Power Photo-processing Laser System, was supervised by Robert L. Byer. [2]
She returned to the University of Washington as a faculty member from 1987 until 1997, in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering. [3] In 1997 she moved to Intel, where she became an Intel Fellow before retiring in 2014. [1] While at Intel, her work involved in reducing the minimum dimension of CMOS circuits from 130 nm to 7 nm. On retiring, she joined Cornell as Mary Shepard B. Upson Visiting Professor from 2014 to 2015, and continues at Cornell as an adjunct professor. [1]
Kuhn was elected as an IEEE Fellow in 2011. [1] She was the 2012 recipient of the IEEE Paul Rappaport Award, [4] and the 2016 recipient of the IEEE Frederik Philips Award, "for technical leadership in the development and implementation of breakthrough CMOS technology". [5]
She was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2023, "for technical contributions enabling development and integration of novel transistor devices". [6]
Complementary metal–oxide–semiconductor is a type of metal–oxide–semiconductor field-effect transistor (MOSFET) fabrication process that uses complementary and symmetrical pairs of p-type and n-type MOSFETs for logic functions. CMOS technology is used for constructing integrated circuit (IC) chips, including microprocessors, microcontrollers, memory chips, and other digital logic circuits. CMOS technology is also used for analog circuits such as image sensors, data converters, RF circuits, and highly integrated transceivers for many types of communication.
The 90 nm process refers to the technology used in semiconductor manufacturing to create integrated circuits with a minimum feature size of 90 nanometers. It was an advancement over the previous 130 nm process. Eventually, it was succeeded by smaller process nodes, such as the 65 nm, 45 nm, and 32 nm processes.
A fin field-effect transistor (FinFET) is a multigate device, a MOSFET built on a substrate where the gate is placed on two, three, or four sides of the channel or wrapped around the channel, forming a double or even multi gate structure. These devices have been given the generic name "FinFETs" because the source/drain region forms fins on the silicon surface. The FinFET devices have significantly faster switching times and higher current density than planar CMOS technology.
Chandra Kumar Naranbhai Patel (born 2 July 1938) is an electrical engineer. He developed the carbon dioxide laser in 1963; it is now widely used in industry for cutting and engraving a wide range of materials like plastic and wood. Because the atmosphere is quite transparent to infrared light, CO2 lasers are also used for military rangefinding using LIDAR techniques.
The IEEE Robert N. Noyce Medal is a science award presented by the IEEE for outstanding contributions to the microelectronics industry. It is given to individuals who have demonstrated contributions in multiple areas including technology development, business development, industry leadership, development of technology policy, and standards development. The medal is named in honour of Robert N. Noyce, the co-founder of Intel Corporation. He was also renowned for his 1959 invention of the integrated circuit. The medal is funded by Intel Corporation and was first awarded in 2000.
Behzad Razavi is an Iranian-American professor and researcher of electrical and electronic engineering. Noted for his research in communications circuitry, Razavi is the director of the Communication Circuits Laboratory at the University of California Los Angeles. He is a Fellow and a distinguished lecturer for the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. Among his awards, Razavi is a two-time recipient of the Beatrice Winner Award for Editorial Excellence at the 1994 and 2001 International Solid-State Circuits Conferences. In 2017, he was elected as a member into the National Academy of Engineering for contributions to low-power broadband communication circuits.
Michal Lipson is an American physicist known for her work on silicon photonics. A member of the National Academy of Sciences since 2019, Lipson was named a 2010 MacArthur Fellow for contributions to silicon photonics especially towards enabling GHz silicon active devices. Until 2014, she was the Given Foundation Professor of Engineering at Cornell University in the school of electrical and computer engineering and a member of the Kavli Institute for Nanoscience at Cornell. She is now the Eugene Higgins Professor of Electrical Engineering at Columbia University. In 2009 she co-founded the company PicoLuz, which develops and commercializes silicon nanophotonics technologies. In 2019, she co-founded Voyant Photonics, which develops next generation lidar technology based on silicon photonics. In 2022, Lipson was a co-founder of Xscape photonics to accelerate AI, ML, and simulation hardware. In 2020 Lipson was elected the 2021 vice president of Optica, and she served as the Optica president in 2023.
Robert Louis Byer is a physicist. He was president of the Optical Society of America in 1994 and of the American Physical Society in 2012.
The IEEE Frederik Philips Award is a Technical Field Award that was established by the IEEE in 1971. The award is presented for outstanding accomplishments in the management of research and development resulting in effective innovation in the electrical and electronics industry. This award may be presented to an individual or team of up to three people. Recipients of this award receive a bronze medal, certificate, and honorarium.
Chenming Calvin Hu is a Taiwanese-American electronic engineer who specializes in microelectronics. He is TSMC Distinguished Professor Emeritus in the electronic engineering and computer science department of the University of California, Berkeley. In 2009, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers described him as a “microelectronics visionary … whose seminal work on metal-oxide semiconductor MOS reliability and device modeling has had enormous impact on the continued scaling of electronic devices”.

Amnon Yariv is an Israeli-American professor of applied physics and electrical engineering at Caltech, known for innovations in optoelectronics. Yariv obtained his B.S., M.S. and PhD. in electrical engineering from University of California, Berkeley in 1954, 1956 and 1958, respectively.

Her research considers oxide materials for interference coatings and spectrometry imaging. She is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, American Physical Society, Optica, and SPIE. Menoni served as the President of the IEEE Photonics Society from 2020 to 2021.
