Kerwin Kofi Charles is the Indra K. Nooyi Dean and Frederic D. Wolfe Professor of Economics, Policy, and Management at the Yale School of Management. [1] He is also a research associate at the National Bureau of Economic Research and an elected Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists. [2] He has been chair of the Board of trustees of NORC, [3] serves on the board of trustees of the Panel Study of Income Dynamics, is a member of the Federal Economic Statistics Advisory Committee, and sits on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Labor Economics. [1] He was previously the Edwin A. and Betty L. Bergman Distinguished Service Professor of the Harris School of Public Policy at The University of Chicago, [4] and was a professor at the University of Michigan from 1995 - 2006. [5]

Deanship

On December 5, 2019, Charles announced that the Yale School of Management had received the largest gift in its history—$100 million to fund programs devoted to strengthening leadership in public school systems. The gift came from The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation and will make possible the creation of the Broad Center at the Yale School of Management. The new center will oversee a new Master's Degree in Education Management and executive training for top leaders in public school systems—both tuition-free. The Broad Center at Yale SOM will also create a data repository of research related to leadership effectiveness in K-12 education. [6]

Research

Charles' work has focused on a variety of topics related to applied microeconomics, labor markets, and race/gender, [7] including earnings and wealth inequality, conspicuous consumption, race and gender labor market discrimination, the intergenerational transmission of economic status, worker and family adjustment to job loss and health shocks, non-work among prime-aged persons, and the labor market consequences of housing bubbles and sectoral change. [1]

Collaborating with Patrick Bayer, he studied earnings differences between black and white men in the U.S. between 1940 and 2014. The study found that the median black-white earnings gap was the same in 2014 as it had been in 1950. However, they also found that black men higher in the income distribution narrowed the gap, mainly due to advances by those with a college education. [8]

With Erik Hurst and Matthew J. Notowidigdo, he found that the housing boom that preceded the Great Recession depressed college enrollment as young people opted into the labor market, a trend that was only partially reversed during the subsequent housing crash. [9]

In work with Erik Hurst and Nikolai Roussanov, he has found that Black and Hispanic Americans spend more on visible consumption and automobile expenses: "Conspicuous consumption" than White Americans, and that some of this difference appears to be motivated by an attempt by Black Americans to appear wealthier than they actually are. [10]

In work with Ming-Ching Luoh, he has found that the high incarceration rates of black men affect marriage rates and non-marital childbearing among Black families in the United States. [11]

In recent research with Jonathan Guryan and Jessica Pan, using decades of Census and General Social Survey data, he has shown that the careers of white women in the United States are influenced by the level of sexism in their states of birth. [12]

Personal

Charles was born in Buxton-Friendship, Guyana, the son of Reuben Charles, former Chief Fisheries Officer, and Mrs. Paulette Charles, a former educator. [13] He provides an annual prize of $1000 in memory of his grandmother to students attending schools in his hometown who have outstanding performance on the Grade Six Examinations. [14]

Rhonda Michèle Williams was an American professor, activist and political economist whose work combined economics with multiple other social fields including race and gender analysis, law, politics, public policy and cultural studies. She aimed to show how the examination of the roles of race and gender in economics benefitted from an inclusive approach rather than a separate and fragmented analysis in order to ensure that issues of economic inequality and discrimination were aptly addressed. Williams was also noted as being consistent in aligning her own ethics with economic analysis resulting in a legacy in the political economy of race and gender.

Lisa Blau Kahn is a professor of economics at the University of Rochester. Her research focuses on labor economics with interests in organization, education, and contract theory. From 2014 to 2018, she served as an associate professor of economics at Yale School of Management and as an assistant professor of economics at Yale School of Management from 2008 to 2014. From 2010 to 2011, Kahn served as the senior economist for labor and education policy on President Obama's Council of Economic Advisers.

Marcus Alexis was professor emeritus of management & strategy at the Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management. He was a former chairman of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and a commissioner with the Interstate Commerce Commission during the Carter Administration. He was the first African American to receive a Ph.D. in economics from the University of Minnesota in 1959, and was known for his work training and mentoring other African American Economists. Kirabo "Bo" Jackson is an American economist who is Abraham Harris Professor of Education and Social Policy and Professor of Economics at Northwestern University, a Fellow at the Institute for Policy Research, and a Faculty Research Fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research. He previously served as co-editor at Journal of Human Resources and is currently Editor in Chief of the American Economic Journal: Economic Policy. In 2020, he was elected to the National Academy of Education and was awarded the David N. Kershaw Award and Prize for contributions to the field of public policy analysis and management from the Association for Public Policy Analysis and Management (APPAM). Melvin "Mel" Stephens Jr. is an American economist and professor of economics and public policy in the economics department and the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan. He is also a research associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research, and a member of the Academic Research Council of the U.S. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau. His research is in the areas of displaced workers, household consumption, and retirement decisions. He has been nominated as an officer of the American Economic Association.

Rebecca Diamond is Class of 1988 Professor of Economics at Stanford Graduate School of Business and an associate editor of Econometrica and American Economic Journal: Applied Economics. Her research areas include urban economics and labor economics.
