Oakland is a borough in Bergen County, in the U.S. state of New Jersey and a suburb of New York City. As of the 2020 United States census, the borough's population was 12,748, a decrease of six people from the 2010 census count of 12,754, which in turn reflected an increase of 288 (+2.3%) from the 12,466 counted in the 2000 census.

As of the 2020 United States census, the township's population was 16,585, a decrease of 111 (−0.7%) from the 2010 census count of 16,696, which in turn reflected an increase of 188 (+1.1%) from the 16,508 counted in the 2000 census.
Henry P. McNamara was an American Republican Party politician, who served in the New Jersey State Senate from 1985 to 2008, where he represented the 40th Legislative District. In the Senate, he was Minority Whip from 1990 to 1991. He was also a member of the Senate Environment Committee and the Transportation Committee.

DiGaetano originally represented Passaic, New Jersey, but moved to Nutley, New Jersey following his 1999 re-election. He served with John Kelly of Nutley for many years in the Assembly, but for his last two terms in office he served as part of a split ticket; Wood-Ridge, New Jersey mayor Paul Sarlo was elected to Kelly's seat in 2001 and after Sarlo moved to the State Senate Frederick Scalera of Nutley was elected in 2003 to replace him.
John E. Rooney is an American Republican Party politician, who served in the New Jersey General Assembly, where he represented the 39th Legislative District. He served in the Assembly from 1983 to 2010, which made him the longest-serving representative in the General Assembly. He retired from the Assembly after his term expired in January 2010 and endorsed Republican Washington Township Councilman Bob Schroeder in the 2009 election who won his seat. Rooney served as a council member in Northvale from 1976 to 1979. In 1979 he was elected Mayor of Northvale and served until 1988. He held dual office as Mayor of Northvale and state assemblyman during this period. After the residents of Northvale asked him to run again in 1992 he won that election and served again as Mayor of Northvale and state assemblyman. Altogether John Rooney served the residents of Northvale and Legislative District 39 from 1976 until 2012.

In addition to his private law practice, Spizziri served as attorney to the Planning Board for the Borough of Franklin Lakes, New Jersey for 43 years.

The 2017 New Jersey General Assembly elections were held on November 7, 2017, to elect members to all 80 seats of the New Jersey General Assembly. Prior to the elections, Democrats held a 52–28 majority in the lower house. Overall, the Democrats increased their majority by 2 to a super-majority at 54–26, due to holding all their seats as well as picking up open seats in District 2 and District 16. This tied Democrats for their largest majority since 1979.
