Kevin Kiely is an Irish politician and former Mayor of Limerick from 2009 to 2010. [1] He was made a Peace Commissioner in 1983 by the then Fine Gael Minister for Justice, Michael Noonan. [2] He is a member of Fine Gael. [2]
He was first elected to Limerick City Council in 1985. [2] He was re-elected to the council in June 2009. [2] He is a member of the Governing Authority of the University of Limerick. [2] He is Chairman of Limerick City Council Joint Policing and a former Chairman of Limerick City Council Future Planning. [2] He is married with two children. [2] In November 2009, he called for unemployed European Union nationals to be deported from Ireland. [3] His views led to a debate over racism. [4] This was part of a broader controversy surrounding racist comments from Fine Gael members in Limerick. [5]
In March 2010, he called for a change to the law which bans selling alcohol on Good Friday and Christmas Day, at a time when a rugby match was due to take place in Limerick city. [6] Shortly before leaving office in June 2010, he again was the subject of national news when he called for the re-introduction of capital punishment. [7] [8]
He left Fine Gael, over the party's failure to select him as a candidate for the 2011 Irish general election. He unsuccessfully ran as an Independent candidate for the constituency of Limerick City. [9]

Michael Noonan is an Irish former Fine Gael politician who served as Minister for Finance from 2011 to 2017, Leader of the Opposition and Leader of Fine Gael from 2001 to 2002, Minister for Health from 1994 to 1997, Minister for Industry and Commerce from 1986 to 1987, Minister for Energy from January 1987 to March 1987 and Minister for Justice from 1982 to 1986. The Leader of the Opposition in Ireland is a de facto term sometimes used to describe the politician who leads the largest party in the Parliamentary Opposition in the lower house of the Irish Parliament, Dáil Éireann. The Mayor of Limerick is the head of the local government of the City and County of Limerick. It is a directly elected office with a five-year term. Following the 2024 Limerick mayoral election, John Moran was inaugurated as the first office-holder on 21 June 2024.

The 2019 Irish local elections were held in all local authorities in Ireland on Friday, 24 May 2019, on the same day as the 2019 European Parliament election and a referendum easing restrictions on divorce. Each local government area is divided into local electoral areas (LEAs) where three to seven councillors are elected on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote.
Brian Leddin is an Irish Green Party politician who has been a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Limerick City constituency since the 2020 general election. He was appointed Chair of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Climate Action in September 2020, is a member of the Joint Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and Chair of the Green Party's parliamentary party. He is the Green Party spokesperson for Transport, Energy and Climate Action.
