Khitindra Chandra Baishya (born 23 May 1952) is a Bangladeshi open water swimmer and freedom fighter. [1] In recognition of his contribution to the Bangladesh Liberation War, the government of Bangladesh awarded him the country's second highest civilian award Ekushey Padak in 2019. [2] [3] He was named one of the World's 50 Most Adventurous Open Water Men in 2019 by the World Open Water Swimming Association.

Early life

Baishya was born on 23 May 1952 at Jahangirpur village of Madan Upazila in Netrokona District of the then East Pakistan to Kshitish Chandra Baishya and Suparva Rani Baishya. [4] He completed his graduation from Murari Chand College and obtained his post graduate degree in physics from Dhaka University. [4] [5]

Career

After completing his post-graduation in 1980, Baishya did a two years fellowship at Bangladesh Meteorological Department. [5] In 1982, he joined the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh (CAAB). [5] He retired from service in 2011 [5] and joined the same organization as ANS Consultant under Flight Safety and Regulations Division of CAAB. [6]

Swimming

On 16 September 1974, Baishya completed a 93-hour and 11 minutes open water swim in the pond of Jagannath Hall at Dhaka University and again at the same pond for 108 hours and 5 minutes in 1976 which was organized by Dhaka University Central Students' Union. [7] In 1980, he went to India and crossed 74 km course of Bhagirathi River under 12 hours and 28 minutes. In 2017, he crossed 146 km down the Kangsha River in 43 hours and 12 minutes. [8] [9] On 5 September 2018, he broke his previous record when he crossed 185 km in 60 hours and 55 minutes. [10] He was named one of the World's 50 Most Adventurous Open Water Men in 2019 by the World Open Water Swimming Association. [11]

Personal life

Khitindra is married to Anupama Baishya in his personal life. [5] The couple has a son and a daughter. [5] He lives in Dhaka with his family. [5]

Ekushey Padak Second highest civilian award in Bangladesh

Ekushey Padak is the second highest civilian award in Bangladesh, introduced in memory of the martyrs of the Bengali Language Movement of 1952. The award is given to recognize contributions in a number of fields, including culture, education, and economics. The Ministry of Cultural Affairs administers the award.

Shahnaz Rahmatullah was a Bangladeshi singer. Her notable songs are Ekbar Jete De Na Amar Chotto Sonar Gaye, Je Chilo Drishtir Shimanay and Ek Tara Tui Desher Kotha. She was the recipient of the Ekushey Padak in 1992 and Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer for the film Chhutir Phande (1990).

Abdul Alim was a Bangladeshi folk singer. He won the Bangladesh National Film Award for Best Male Playback Singer in 1975 for playback in Sujan Sakhi. He was posthumously awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1977 and Independence Day Award in 1997 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Qayyum Chowdhury Bangladeshi painter

Qayyum Chowdhury was a Bangladeshi painter. Along with Zainul Abedin, Quamrul Hassan and Safiuddin Ahmed, he is considered as a first generation artist of Bangladesh. He was awarded the Ekushey Padak in 1984 and the Independence Day Award in 2014 by the Government of Bangladesh.

Jamilur Reza Choudhury Bangladeshi civil engineer

Dr. Jamilur Reza Choudhury was a Bangladeshi civil engineer, professor, researcher, and education advocate. He was an Adviser (Minister) to Caretaker Government of Bangladesh. He was the first vice chancellor of BRAC University and former vice chancellor of University of Asia Pacific. He was also the president of Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee from 2003. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh in the category of science and technology in 2017. He was inducted as a National Professor by the Government of Bangladesh in 2018.

Sudhin Das was a Bangladeshi Nazrul Sangeet musician. He was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh.

Sayed Haider was a Bangladeshi physician and Language Movement activist. He along with Badrul Alam designed the first Shaheed Minar. It was then demolished by the Pakistani Army on 26 February 1952. For his contribution to the Language Movement he was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2016.

Sukomal Barua is a Bangladeshi educationist. He is a Professor in the Department of Pali and Buddhist Studies at University of Dhaka. He was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2006 by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to education. He is a member of advisory council in Bangladesh Nationalist Party.

S. M. Mohsin was a Bangladeshi stage and television actor. He became an honorary fellow of the Bangla Academy in 2018. In 2020, he was awarded Ekushey Padak by the Government of Bangladesh for his contribution to acting.
