The Kidnapping and murder of Yaron Chen was a kidnapping and murder attack on August 5, 1993, in which Hamas militants abducted and murdered Israeli soldier Yaron Chen.

The attack

On Thursday, August 5, 1993, the 20-year-old private Yaron Chen, who was on his way home from a military base, was hitchhiking at the Rama intersection near Arab east Jerusalem. Chen was picked up by a white Fiat van with an Israeli license plate. [1] Another soldier reported seeing Chen struggling with three Palestinians who drove a white Fiat car. [2]

Chen was shot to death shortly afterwards while struggling with his abductors. [3] [4]

Hamas publicized its abduction and murder of Chen. [5] Chen's body was found before dawn in the burnt-out charred white Fiat van in the village of Beitunia in the West Bank. [1]

Conviction of assailant; release in Shalit exchange

Fahed Sabri Barhan al-Shaludi was originally sentenced to a life sentence. On October 18, 2011, he was released to Gaza as part of the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange between Israel and Hamas. [6] [7]

Dirar Abu Seesi or Abu Sisi was a deputy engineer for the Gaza Strip's sole electrical plant, which provides 25% of Gaza's power. Israel alleged that he is a Hamas weapons engineer. In February 2011, he traveled to Ukraine, his wife's native country, to apply for citizenship, after coming to believe that Gaza was no longer a safe place to raise his six children. He disappeared in Poltava on February 19, and later turned up in an Israeli prison after being kidnapped by Israeli intelligence personnel. On April 4, 2011 he was indicted for his aid to Hamas and was convicted on March 30, 2015 in a plea bargain.

Raed al Atar (1974–2014) was the commander of the Rafah company of the Hamas Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades and member of the Hamas high military council. According to the Congressional Research Service analyst Jim Zanotti, his command was important due to Rafah being the destination point for the smuggling tunnels from Egypt.

2006 Gaza cross-border raid

The 2006 Gaza cross-border raid was a cross-border raid which was carried out on 25 June 2006 in which a Palestinian militant squad thought to consist of 7 to 8 militants managed to cross the border through an attack tunnel near the Kerem Shalom Crossing and attack Israel Defense Forces (IDF) military positions. In the attack, two IDF soldiers and two Palestinian militants were killed, four IDF soldiers were wounded, and one wounded soldier Gilad Shalit was captured and taken to the Gaza Strip.

Afula axe attack

The Afula axe attack was a Palestinian militant attack which occurred on November 30, 1994, in northern town of Afula when a lone Palestinian assailant attacked a 19-year-old female Israeli soldier who was on her way home from the artillery base in which she served, in the downtown area of the town, near the town's police station. The attacker hit her head from behind with an axe. The attack, which shocked the Israeli public, was one of the more prominent axe attacks at that time, which signified to many in the Israeli public a deterioration to their personal security at the time. The attacker was sentenced to life imprisonment, was released in the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange, but was returned to prison after he resumed militant activity. He is currently serving a life sentence.

Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange

The Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange followed a 2011 agreement between Israel and Hamas to release Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit in exchange for 1,027 prisoners – mainly Palestinians and Arab-Israelis, although there was also a Ukrainian, a Jordanian and a Syrian. Two-hundred and eighty of these were sentenced to life in prison for planning and perpetrating various attacks against Israeli targets. Hamas military leader Ahmed Jabari was quoted in the Saudi Arabian newspaper Al-Hayat as confirming that the prisoners released under the deal were collectively responsible for the killing of 569 Israelis. The agreement came five years and four months after Palestinian militants captured Shalit in southern Israel along the Gaza Strip border.

The murders of Avi Sasportas and Ilan Saadon refers to two separate abductions undertaken by Hamas which took place respectively on February 16 and May 3, 1989 and the subsequent murders of the two men. The two Israeli soldiers were Avi Sasportas and Ilan Saadon.

Although the bullets missed the couple's one-year-old son, who was in a car seat in the back, both Yaron and Efrat were killed.

On 12 June 2014, three Israeli teenagers were kidnapped at the bus/hitchhiking stop at the Israeli settlement of Alon Shvut in Gush Etzion, in the West Bank, as they were hitchhiking to their homes. The three teens were Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Shaer, and Eyal Yifrah.
