On the afternoon of 28 July 2021, a decapitated body was discovered in the middle of an intersection in Shakopee, Minnesota, a Twin Cities suburb; the head was also found nearby. [1] The victim was identified as America Mafalda Thayer, a 55-year-old woman from Shakopee. [2] The suspect is 42-year-old Alexis Saborit, an illegal immigrant from Cuba and Thayer's boyfriend. He was apprehended by police 1.5 miles away from the scene and faced first-degree murder charges. [3] In 2023, Saborit was acquitted by reason of mental illness.

Suspect

Alexis Saborit was the boyfriend of America Thayer; the two had been dating for roughly seven years.

Saborit is an illegal immigrant from Cuba, who was wanted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. According to them, he has a criminal record which included domestic assault charges in Minnesota and Louisiana, a DUI, and running from a police officer. [4] They attempted to deport him in 2012, but Cuba would not approve his travel documents and so he remained in the country. [5]

He was convicted of domestic violence in 2017 when he pinned Thayer to the ground after becoming suspicious that she had been speaking to another man at a bar. Before the trial, a restraining order was put in place against him, but was removed after Thayer sent the court a handwritten note asking for it to be overturned. [6]

Saborit was scheduled to appear in Scott County court on the day of the killing on charges of arson after he allegedly set fire to his apartment. [7]

After two psychological evaluations of the defendant, the Scott County Attorney acknowledged the case was headed toward a likely finding of not guilty by reason of mental illness. [8]

Killing

On 28 July 2021, Saborit and Thayer were driving through Shakopee. According to Saborit, an altercation between the two of them broke out after Thayer told him that she wanted to break up with him. [9] [10] Saborit pulled out a machete, which he often carried with him, [9] and beheaded Thayer. [11]

At around 2:30 PM, the Shakopee Police Department responded to a report of a headless body dumped from a car near 4th and Spencer. When they arrived on the scene, they found America Thayer's headless body, along with her head, lying near her car. She was pronounced dead on the scene. [12] Further investigation of the scene revealed a machete and bloody clothing in the recycling bin of a nearby alleyway. [10]

Police documents show that several people witnessed the killing. [10] One person recorded a video of Saborit dumping the body, then picking up Thayer's head by the hair. Another reported seeing Saborit hitting something and throwing it. [13]

Local police found Saborit wandering near Minnesota State Highway 101 and Shenandoah Parkway. They arrested him at The Landing historical village. He was roughly 1.5 miles away from the scene and three blocks away from the hotel he had been staying at; The Travelodge. [14] He was charged with second-degree murder; his bail was set at $2.5 million. [14] [15] In an interview with the police, he admitted to killing Thayer with a machete. [11] According to the Scott County court system, he was assigned a public defender at his request. His first court appearance was scheduled for August 9. [9] On July 17, 2023, Saborit was acquitted of the killing by reason of mental illness. [16]

Nicola Edgington is a British double killer who also attempted to murder a third person. Nolen, who the plant had fired prior to the attack, was shot and wounded by Vaughan Foods chief operating officer Mark Vaughan. On 4 September 2014, 82-year-old Palmira Silva was beheaded in her back garden in Edmonton, London, by 25-year-old Nicholas Salvador, who was on a rampage. Friends of Salvador had recently noticed odd behaviour by him, including drug and alcohol abuse and an obsession with videos of beheadings.

On August 8, 2015, a mass shooting occurred inside a home in northern Harris County, Texas, near Houston. David Ray Conley III, 48, broke into his former home and held hostage Valerie and Dwayne Jackson, Sr., along with six children, including his own 13-year-old son. Over the course of nine hours, he shot and killed the entire family. He then engaged in a shootout with responding police before surrendering.

On August 20, 2016, a mass killing occurred in Citronelle, Alabama, resulting in the deaths of five people, including a woman who was five months pregnant. They were killed in the early morning in a private residence in a rural area west of the city. It was owned by a brother of Laneta Lester, who had sought refuge there. She and her brother's infant were abducted and taken to Leakesville, Mississippi, by her estranged boyfriend, Derrick Dearman. He released her that day. Lester returned with the infant to Citronelle. On July 18, 2018, University of Iowa student Mollie Cecilia Tibbetts disappeared while jogging near her home in Brooklyn, Iowa. A month later, police identified 24-year-old Cristhian Bahena Rivera as a suspect in connection with the disappearance; surveillance footage showed Rivera's car following Tibbetts on her jog. Deona Marie Knajdek, a 31-year old American woman, was killed on June 13, 2021, when a man drove a car into a crowd of demonstrators who had gathered as a part of the Uptown Minneapolis unrest. That evening, demonstrators protesting the law enforcement killing of Winston Boogie Smith had blocked the intersection of West Lake Street and Girard Avenue. At approximately 11:39 p.m. CDT, a man in a late-model Jeep Cherokee drove into the crowd at a high speed, striking a parked vehicle that had been used to block off the intersection to traffic, which then collided with protesters, killing Knajdek and injuring three others.

Noor Mukadam was a Pakistani victim of murder. She was 27 years old and the daughter of a former diplomat, Shaukat Mukadam. She was murdered at a house in an upscale neighborhood, Sector F-7/4, of Islamabad, on 20 July 2021. Noor was held hostage for two days, tortured with a knuckleduster, then decapitated with a knife. Noor was raped before being murdered.

In the early morning hours of 20 April 1998, in Marina South, Central, Singapore, a 23-year-old Malaysian named Jonaris Badlishah, who was the nephew of the Sultan of Kedah, brutally murdered 42-year-old beautician Sally Poh Bee Eng in order to rob her of her Rolex watch, which he wanted to give to his girlfriend as a birthday present. He was said to have used a hammer to hit her on the head more than ten times before robbing her, leading to Poh to die from her skull fractures. Jemma Mitchell is an Australian-born English former osteopath who was sentenced to life imprisonment for the 2021 murder of her friend, Mee Kuen Chong. On February 23, 2022, Shad Thyrion, a 24-year-old American man, was murdered and dismembered by his lover, Taylor Schabusiness. Thyrion's severed head was discovered by his mother, Tara Pakanich, in a bucket in the basement of their family home in Green Bay, Wisconsin. Other severed body parts, including Thyrion's bisected torso in a storage tote, were later discovered by police.
