Kim Cheong-gi (born April 4,1941) is a South Korean director of animated,fantasy,and science fiction films.
His most well known work, Robot Taekwon V (1976),is considered one of the milestones of Korean animation. With actor Shim Hyung-rae,he created the Ureme series,one of the more popular Korean children's series of the late 1980s.
Korea Taekwondo Association,originally the Korea Tang Soo Do Association (1961),is the first taekwondo organisation. It was founded in 1959,although official South Korean sources give 1961 as its year of establishment. In 1966,some members of the KTA,led by H. H. Choi,broke off from the KTA and formed the International Taekwon-Do Federation (ITF). The Kukkiwon and the then-World Taekwondo Federation were created by the KTA in the early 1970s. The KTA sits under the Korea Sports Council,is aligned with Kukkiwon,and is a Member National Association (MNA) of the WT. Its goal is to promote the martial art taekwondo as a national sport within South Korea.
Shim Hyung-rae is a South Korean former comedian and filmmaker best known for directing Yonggary (Korean: 용가리) and D-War (Korean: 디-워),by far the most expensive Korean movie in history. He has often worked with fellow directors Nam Gi-nam (Korean: 남기남) and Kim Cheong-gi (Korean: 김청기).
Nam Gi-Nam was a prolific South Korean director of movies,cartoons and TV series. Born in Gwangju,South Korea,he graduated from Sorabol Art College. He made his debut in 1972 with Don't Cry My Daughter. The main genres in which he worked were animation,comedies,and science fiction. He was often associated with actor/director Shim Hyung-rae.
Robot Taekwon V is a South Korean animated film directed by Kim Cheong-gi and produced by Yu Hyun-mok,the prominent director of such films as Obaltan (1960). It was released on July 24,1976,immediately becoming a hit in the late 1970s,and consequently inspired a string of sequels in following years. Robot Taekwon V was not only a successful science-fiction animation for children but also served as powerful political propaganda for ideologies such as nationalism and anti-communism in the 1970s under the military regime of President Park Chung-hee. Decades after the film was initially released,the digital restoration of the film was completed in 2005,and since then the Robot Taekwon V character has built its own branding as the Korean science fiction hero as well as the symbol of nostalgia for Korean people who grew up with the film series. Robot Taekwon V was released in the United States in a dubbed format under the name Voltar the Invincible.
Seoul Institute of the Arts is a prominent educational institution specializing in the Arts located in Ansan,Gyeonggi Province,South Korea. The Namsan campus in the heart of Seoul is used for presentation of arts productions and convergence with industry. The Ansan Campus opened in 2001 and is used for educational training,which aims to tear down barriers between disciplines,genres,and majors. The Institute continues to be a forerunner in globalization of Korean arts and creation of new forms of arts.
Yu Hyun-mok was a South Korean film director. Born in Sariwon,Hwanghae,Korea,he made his film debut in 1956 with Gyocharo (Crossroads). According to the website koreanfilm.org,his 1961 film Obaltan "has repeatedly been voted the best Korean film of all time in local critics' polls." Yu attended the San Francisco International Film Festival in 1963,where Variety called Obaltan a "remarkable film",and praised Yu's "[b]rilliantly detailed camera" and the film's "probing sympathy and rich characterizations."
Yeon Gaesomun is a 2006 South Korean historical television series,starring Lee Tae-gon in title role. It also featured Hwang In-young,Lee Jung-gil and Son Tae-young. Directed by Lee Jong Han,the series follows the life of Yeon Gaesomun,a powerful military dictator in the waning days of the Goguryeo kingdom. It premiered on June 1,2006,on SBS and broadcast for 100-episodes on Saturday and Sunday at 20:45 (KST) till June 17,2007. The budget of the series was 40 billion South Korean won.
