Kim Villagante, known professionally, Kimmortal, is a queer Filipino-Canadian musician, singer-songwriter and visual artist based in Vancouver. [1]

Music

Kimmortal is engaged with music genres such as rap, hip-hop, R&B, soul, indie-rock and experimental. [2] Kimmortal released their first album Sincerity in 2014, [3] and announced the release of their second album X Marks the Swirl in 2019. [4] Their works deal with themes such as race, [5] gender, [6] identity, [6] indigenous rights, [2] personal growth [7] and community building. [6] Through their activities, they attempt to include diverse voices that they believe to be unheard or overlooked. [7] Outside of musical activities, Kimmortal leads musical as well conversational workshops in which they open discuss ideas of gender, race, and First Nations issues associated with youth. [2]

Influences

Kimmortal claimed to be inspired by artists including Princess Nokia, JB the First Lady, Future Star, Ziibiwan, Lido Pimienta, Megang, Missy D, Huali, Snotty Nose Rez Kids, Ostwelve, Ruby Ibarra, Witch Prophet and Leanne Betasamosake Simpson and her poetry+music project. [7] Kimmortal addresses their parents' influence on their works. [6] Kimmortal touches on their cultural background and represents their family's experience of immigration as part of the working class in Canada. [8] In BeatRoute magazine, Kimmortal states their strength "comes from my mom, she has the most powerful voice and she's 4'11…She's definitely a part of me when I'm on stage." [8] Also, In Cut From Steel, Kimmortal indicated the experience of marginalization of their father who struggled as an artist. [7] Kimmortal describes that they are privileged to pursue their artistic career on the basis of their parents struggles and sacrifices. [7]

Collaborations

Kimmortal often collaborates with other musicians. [9] In Cut From Steel, Kimmortal addressed the crucial role of the mutual support among artists that shows respect to their efforts. [7] They have collaborated with Missy D, Jb the FirstLady, Immigrant Lessons, Jillthy, Khingz and Ostwelve.

Jungle

Kimmortal said that the song "Jungle" came from the beatmaking experiment. Kimmortal sampled Kulintang YouTube performance and recorded birds in a cage from their mother's kitchen. They integrated the sounds into a drum component. Editing was done by Kimmortal. They collaborated with Missy D. And Jillthy who composed the lyrics. The music video was shot by Khalil (AKA Khingz) in summer in 2016 in a parking lot. [6]

88 and Beyond

Kimmortal wanted to express self-determination and power as well as self-identification. They wanted to challenge the male centred and cisgender hip-hop field and to give queer, persons of colour, and indigenous artists more opportunity to speak for themselves and reach the community. [12]

Identity

Kimmortal uses they/them pronouns, and was born and raised in Canada, a second generation Filipino Canadian. [2] Kimmortal is inspired by the First Nations communities in Western Canada. [7] In Cut From Steel, Kimmortal identities as "Being queer, non-binary and brown as well as non-black and a non-indigenous settler on stolen land are facts to keep in mind when framing my story in a system that consciously disenfranchises certain communities." [7]

Ivan E. Coyote is a Canadian spoken word performer, writer, and LGBT advocate. Coyote has won many accolades for their collections of short stories, novels, and films. They also visit schools to tell stories and give writing workshops. The CBC has called Coyote a "gender-bending author who loves telling stories and performing in front of a live audience." Coyote is non-binary and uses singular they pronouns. Many of Coyote's stories are about gender, identity, and social justice. Coyote currently resides in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Boombox Saints was a hip hop and R&B group based in Vancouver, BC, Canada. The band officially formed in 2008 taking their name from the 1990s film Boondock Saints. Within four years, Boombox Saints released two EPs, The Boombox EP and Bringin' the Boom Back: Based on a True Story as well as a full-length debut album titled For the Moment. They shared stages with successful and respected acts including J. Cole, Kid Cudi, Big Sean, Mos Def, Jay Electronica, Talib Kweli, Souls of Mischief, Far East Movement, Danny Fernandes and Sean Paul.

Kate Craig was a Canadian video and performance artist. Jerilynn Snuxyaltwa Webster, known by her stage name JB the First Lady is an Indigenous hip-hop and spoken word artist, emcee, beat-boxer, activist, cultural dancer, and youth educator from the Nuxalk and Onondaga nations. She is currently based in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. JB sees her music as a way of capturing oral history and often writes lyrics about challenging subjects such as the Canadian Indian residential school system and missing and murdered Indigenous women. The full name of the organization is the Sher Vancouver LGBTQ Friends Society. Tʼuyʼtʼtanat-Cease Wyss is a Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), Stó꞉lō, Kānaka Maoli (Hawaiian), Irish-Métis, and Swiss multi-media artist, ethnobotanist, independent curator, educator, activist, and small business owner based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Tʼuyʼtʼtanat is Wyss's ancestral name, which means “woman who travels by canoe to gather medicines for all people.” Wyss's interdisciplinary practice encompasses aspects of visual art, fiber arts, ethnobotany, storytelling, and community education, among other interdisciplinary approaches, and she has been working with new media, performance, and interdisciplinary arts for more than 30 years. As a Coast Salish weaver, Wyss works with wool and cedar and uses indigenous plants in the dyeing process. Wyss also engages with beekeeping and gardening practices as part of community-led initiatives and as a way to explore aspects of land remediation - the ability of plants to remediate soil that has been contaminated with colonial toxins.

Lisa C. Ravensbergen is a multi-disciplinary artist and writer of Ojibwe/Swampy Cree and English/Irish descent, based in Vancouver, British Columbia. Ravensbergen is a Jessie-nominated actor, dramaturge, director and dancer. Ravensbergen is an Associate Artist with Full Circle First Nations Performance Group and Playwright-in-Residence with Delinquent Theatre. She holds undergraduate degrees from Trinity Western University and Simon Fraser University and an MA in Cultural Studies from Queens University.

Whess Harman is an artist and curator based in what is colonially known as Vancouver, British Columbia. They are most known for their beading and zine work, including their Potlach Punk series and their Together Apart Zine series.

Aiyyana Maracle was a Haudenosaunee performance artist, activist, theatre director, scholar, and educator. She is known for her contributions to the Indigenous performance art community. In 1997, she was the first Indigenous recipient of Canada Council’s esteemed John Hirsch Prize for emerging theatre directors.

Gina Williams is an Australian singer-songwriter from Western Australia. Williams has released five studio albums and is the recipient of seven West Australian Music Industry Awards.
