Kiran Pahal (5 August 2000) is an Indian athlete from Haryana. She specialises in 400 metres run. She is the second athlete from India to go sub-51sec in 2024. [1] She qualified for the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris in 400m. [2] [3]

Early life

Pahal is from Rohtak, Haryana. She has no sponsors and trains on her own in Haryana under her coach Akaash Chikara. [2] [4] After her father passed away, she has been having differences with her mother and siblings and trains on her own. Senior athlete Hima Das has been a great support, she said. [4]

Career

Pahal is a three time National champion. In June 2022, she won the 400m individual event at the inter state championship at Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, Chennai clocking 52.57. [5] She was part of the 4 × 400 m relay teams that won the National title in October 2019 at Ranchi and June 2021 at Patiala. She also takes part in 100m and 200m but has been focussing on 400m. She is ranked 139 in world rankings in 400m. [5]

She clocked 50.92s in 400m in the semifinals at the National Inter-State Athletics Championships at Panchkula on 27 June 2024 to qualify for Olympics. The qualifying mark for Olympics was 50.95s. [6] The Indian female athlete to take part in the 400m at Olympics was Nirmal Sheoran at Rio Olympics in 2016. [7]

The 4 × 400 metres relay or long relay is an athletics track event in which teams consist of four runners who each complete 400 metres or one lap. It is traditionally the final event of a track meet. At top class events, the first leg and the first bend of the second leg are run in lanes. Start lines are thus staggered over a greater distance than in an individual 400 metres race; the runners then typically move to the inside of the track. The slightly longer 4 × 440 yards relay, on an Imperial distance, was a formerly run British Commonwealth and American event, until metrication was completed in the 1970s.

She held the 400 m National record of 51.05 seconds set at the National Circuit Athletic Meet held in Chennai on 16 June 2004. She broke the previous record held by K. M. Beenamol since November 2001. In doing so, she passed the qualifying mark for the 2004 Athens Olympics. She along with Chitra K. Soman, Rajwinder Kaur and K. M. Beenamol form the team that holds the current National record in 4 x 400 metres relay.

In India, the sport of athletics was introduced during the period of the British Raj. The sport is governed at national level by the Athletics Federation of India, which was formed in 1946. Despite its large population, few Indian athletes have won a medal in a global or major championship. This began to change in the 21st century, when Indians started taking greater interest in athletics more generally and improved facilities for the sport began to be built at a local level. At a continental level, it has been among the more successful Asian nations, though some distance behind China and Japan.

The mark places her only behind contested results of Marita Koch and Jarmila Kratochvílová. Over the distance, at only 19, Naser was the 2017 World silver medallist. She has also won, as a member of the Bahraini mixed-gender 4x400 m relay team, the 2019 World Championships bronze medal.

Aishwarya Kailash Mishra is an Indian athlete from Maharashtra. She competes in 400m. She is named in the Indian athletics team for the 400m event as a reserve athlete for the relay team event for the 2022 Asian Games at Hangzhou, China. She was part of the women's 4 × 400 m relay Indian team that won silver along with Vithya Ramraj, Subha Venkatesan and Prachi Choudhary at the 2022 Asian Games.

Deepthi Jeevanji is an Indian para-athlete from Telangana. She takes part in the women’s 400 meters T20 run. In the Para Athletic World Championship 2024 at Kobe, Japan, she set a world record in the 400m T20 category clocking 55.06 sec on 20 May 2024. She also qualified for the Paris Paralympics. Earlier, she set the Asian Para Games record in 2023. She broke the record of American Breanna Clark, which stood at 55.12s.

Jyothika Sri Dandi is an Indian sprinter. In 2023, she became Indian national champion over 400 metres.
