Kirk Reid (born 1964 or 1965) is an English convicted rapist and serial sex offender. In 2009, Reid was convicted of two rapes, 26 sexual assaults and possession of indecent images of children. [1] [2]

Early life and career

Kirk Reid was raised by his mother in Battersea, London, until the age of nine, and then spent time periodically in the care system. [3] Reid has three brothers, some of whom are half-siblings; one of them was a Metropolitan Police constable at the time of Reid's arrest. [3]

Reid made his living as a chef, and at the time of his arrest, he was head chef at Camberwell College. [3] Reid's avocation was football, and he refereed and coached amateur matches in the Wimbledon district league and Battersea Park, sometimes for teams of children and women. [3] Reid's criminal notoriety and work with children prompted the Football Association (FA) to issue the statement that "The FA would like to make it very clear that Kirk Reid was not a qualified FA youth football coach and did not undertake a mandatory FA CRB check." [3]

At the time of his arrest in 2008, Reid lived in Cavendish Road, Balham, with his partner of five years, and owned a second property nearby. [3]

Criminal history

Police believe that Reid may have been responsible for more than 70 sexual assaults over a period of 23 years. [4] Reid's pattern involved driving around South London districts—most frequently Tooting and Balham, close to where he lived—looking for women walking home alone. Waiting for them to be distracted or occupied, he would then attack them from behind. Reid's victims ranged in age from 28 to 61, and at least one woman was visibly pregnant. [3]

At Reid's trial in 2009, a woman testified that Reid had raped her near his own home in Battersea in 1984. [1] The woman was 17 years old, and did not report the rape to police at the time. Reid has not been charged with her rape. Another woman accused Reid of raping her in Balham in 1995. She reported the rape after his arrest in 2008, and Reid admitted having sex with her, but claimed it was consensual. That same year, Reid was accused and acquitted of indecent assault after a woman claimed he attacked her in an alley. [4]

One of Reid's victims was attacked and sexually assaulted by him in September 2001, after she had got off the night bus in Tooting. [3]

In 2002, police discovered links between 26 sexual assaults in the Wandsworth area of London dating back two years, and Reid was detained after a woman complained of being followed by him, but no further action was taken. [4] In both 2004 and 2006, a car matching the description of Reid's red Volkswagen Golf was witnessed in connection with two separate sexual assaults, once via CCTV.

Arrest

In 2008, the serious crime unit of the Metropolitan Police took over the investigation into the series of assaults, and within hours they named Reid as a suspect. Reid was arrested five days after a DNA test positively linked him to several attacks. [4]

Once in custody, Reid's half-brother Roger, a police constable, visited his cell and asked him directly if he was guilty of the rapes. Reid replied, "I did it", a confession he later retracted. [3]

Conviction

In March 2009, Reid was convicted at Kingston upon Thames Crown Court of two rapes and 26 sexual assaults committed in southwest London from 1995–2007, for which he was sentenced to life imprisonment. [1] He was also found guilty of two counts of possessing indecent images of children on his home computer. [1] [2] The judge recommended that Reid serve at least seven-and-a-half years before being considered for release.

In January 2018, more than a year after Reid's recommended non-parole period had elapsed, the Parole Board announced that his case had come up for review "following the standard six-month process for all indeterminate sentence prisoners". [5] In September 2018, Reid's request for release was denied, and the board ruled that he could request release again in 2020. [6]

Subsequent developments

Reid's uninterrupted crime spree, like that of another prolific serial rapist, the black cab driver John Worboys, was largely blamed on the failure of the police to successfully investigate sexual assaults, and led to procedural changes in the London Metropolitan Police's handling of rape and sexual assault crimes. [7] John Yates, an assistant police commissioner at the time, stated that "Nothing can adequately excuse the failure to follow up straightforward lines of inquiry that should have seen Reid arrested" in 2004—four years before his actual arrest. [7]

The handling of the police investigation was reviewed by the Independent Police Complaints Commission, which concluded that a "sustained failure" had occurred to "tackle a long-standing pattern of offences". [8] Three senior officers were subject to misconduct hearings for the errors made in the investigations, including not taking Reid's DNA sample when he became a police suspect. [8] Deborah Glass, IPCC Commissioner for London, said "The failure to take a serial sex offender off the streets of London years earlier is a shameful chapter in the history of the Metropolitan Police Service." [9]

Rachel Jane Nickell was a British woman who was stabbed to death on Wimbledon Common in south-west London on 15 July 1992. The initial police investigation of the crime resulted in the arrest in controversial circumstances of an innocent man, who was acquitted. Her killer, Robert Napper, was identified by a later police investigation and convicted in 2008.

Antoni Imiela was a German-born convicted serial rapist who grew up in County Durham, England. He was found guilty of the rape of nine women and girls, and the indecent assault, and attempted rape, of a 10-year-old girl whom he repeatedly punched and throttled. The crimes took place in Surrey, Kent, Berkshire, London, Hertfordshire and Birmingham, and the press dubbed the offender the M25 Rapist after the M25 motorway that passes in the vicinity of all those areas except Birmingham. He died in HM Prison Wakefield on 8 March 2018.

Robert Clive Napper is an English serial killer and rapist. He has been convicted of two murders, one manslaughter, two rapes and two attempted rapes. He was sentenced to indefinite detention at Broadmoor Hospital on 18 December 2008 for the manslaughter of Rachel Nickell on 15 July 1992. He was previously convicted of the 1993 double murder of Samantha Bisset and her daughter Jazmine Bisset.

A serial rapist is someone who commits multiple rapes, whether with multiple victims or a single victim repeatedly over a period of time. Some serial rapists target children. The terms sexual predator, repeat rape and multiple offending can also be used to describe the activities of those who commit a number of consecutive rapes, but remain unprosecuted when self-reported in research. Others will commit their assaults in prisons. In some instances, a group of serial rapists will work together. These rapists can have a pattern of behavior that is sometimes used to predict their activities and aid in their arrest and conviction. Serial rapists also differ from one time offenders because "serial rapists more often involved kidnapping, verbally and physically threatening the victims, and using or threatening the use of weapons."

John Derek Radford is a British convicted serial sex offender, known as the Black Cab Rapist. Worboys was convicted in 2009 for attacks on 12 women, committed between 2007 and 2008. In 2019, he was convicted for attacks on four more women, the earliest of which took place in 2000. Police say he may have had more than 100 victims.

The Batman rapist is an unidentified English serial sex offender who committed at least seventeen sexual assaults on women in the city of Bath, Somerset, between 1991 and 2000. He is the subject of Britain's longest–running serial rape investigation, codenamed Operation Eagle, and has now eluded capture for more than thirty years. Detective Inspector Paul James of Avon and Somerset Constabulary, leading the operation, said it is "one of the most complicated and protracted investigations" that the force has ever undertaken. In January 2001, the Forensic Science Service used the Low copy number (LCN) DNA profiling technique to isolate the rapist's DNA "fingerprint". They then began the process of taking swabs for comparison from all the men, believed to be around 2,000 individuals, whose names had come up during the course of the investigation.

After primary school he attended Sir William Collins Secondary School in Somers Town, which later changed its name to South Camden Community School and is now renamed Regent High School. In July 2016, aged 57, he was given a life sentence, with a minimum of 25 years for the rape and murder of 17 year old Yiannoulla Yianni in 1982 at her home alone, when her parents, brothers and sisters were working in their shop in the area known as Swiss Cottage, London.

Mark Errin Rust is a convicted Australian serial sex murderer and rapist: he was convicted of two murders committed in 1999 and 2001 respectively. Rust is currently on an indefinite detention order.

Ricardo Cepates is a Honduran convicted serial rapist and kidnapper who attacked seven women and girls in the city of New Brunswick, New Jersey, over 26 months in the early 2000s. His modus operandi was to attack his victims during the late afternoon or early morning in the area surrounding Rutgers University, where some of his victims were attending as students. Cepates was captured the day of his last attack after being accosted by a group of residents.
