Kitui District was an administrative district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital was Kitui. The district had an area of 20,402 km2. [1]

Kitui District was created in 1895 as one of the original districts of Ukamba Province among, Ulu (then named Athi and later Machakos), and Kikuyu districts. The district remained as part of Ukamba Province until 1933, in Central Province until 1953, Southern Province until 1962, and Eastern Province after 1963. [2] [3]

By the 2000s, Kitui District had three more districts created from it; Mutomo, Mwingi and Kyuso, all had a population of 872,742. [4]

In 2010, after the promulgation of the new constitution of Kenya, counties were to be created based on the districts of Kenya that existed prior to 1992. This effectively led to the creation of Kitui County.

Government

The district had two local authorities: Kitui municipality and Kitui county council.

Kitui district was divided into eight administrative divisions: Central (Kitui), Kabati, Chuluni, Mutitu, Mwitika, Mutomo (Ikanga), Ikutha and Yatta.

Kitui is a town and capital of Kitui County in Kenya, 185 kilometres east of Nairobi and 105 kilometres east of Machakos. it covers an area approximately 30,496.4 km squares and lies between latitudes 0°10 South and 3°0 South and longitudes 37°50 East and 39°0 East. The constituencies of Kenya are used to elect members of the National Assembly, the lower chamber of the Kenyan Parliament. In accordance with Article 89 of the 2010 Constitution of Kenya, there are 290 constituencies, based on a formula where these constituencies were to be delineated based on population numbers. Each constituency returns one Member of Parliament. The constituencies are further divided to electoral wards.

<span class="mw-page-title-main">Sub-Counties of Kenya</span>

Sub-counties, also known as Districts, are the decentralised units through which government of Kenya provides functions and services. At national level, sub-counties take a more administrative function like security, statistical purposes, provision of government services, etc. Even though the sub-counties are divisions of counties, powers to create new national sub-counties lies with the national government. As of 2023, there are 314 sub-counties, compared to 290 constituencies. A deputy county commissioner is appointed by the state to lead each sub-county. The sub-counties are further divided into divisions, locations and sub-locations.

Tana River District was a district of Coast Province, Kenya. It was named after the Tana River itself. Before a split that led to the creation of Tana Delta District, Tana River had an area as of 38,446 square kilometres (14,844 sq mi). The district capital was Hola, also known as Galole.

Taita-Taveta District was a district of Kenya, located in the Coast Province of that country. It lies approximately 200 km northwest of Mombasa and 360 km southeast of Nairobi city.

Samburu District was a district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. It covered an area of roughly 21,000 km2 (8,000 mi2) in northern Kenya where the Samburu tribe live. The district had a population of 143,547 in the 1999 census. It stretched north from the Wuaso Ng'iro River to the south of Lake Turkana and also includes Mount Kulal which lies just east of Lake Turkana.

Nyeri District was a district in the Central Province of Kenya. Its headquarters was in Nyeri town. It had an area of 3,356 km2.

Nandi District was an administrative district in the Rift Valley Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Kapsabet.

Marsabit District was an administrative district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Marsabit. The district had a population of 121,478.

Mandera District was an administrative district in the North Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital town was Mandera. The district had an area of 26,744 km2.

Kisumu District was an administrative district of Nyanza Province in western Kenya. Its headquarters is Kisumu. It had a population of 504,359 and a land area of 919 km². The main industries are subsistence agriculture and fishery on Lake Victoria. Kisumu Town was the main commercial centre in western Kenya. The district was created after Central Nyanza District, renamed from Central Kavirondo District, was in 1968, split into Kisumu and Siaya districts. Kisumu district was split up further. In 2013, Kisumu County was officially effected; all districts that were carved out of Kisumu District after 1992 were reconsolidated into the county.

Kirinyaga District was an administrative district in the Central Province of Kenya. Its administrative centre is Kerugoya. As of 1999, the district had a population of 457,105 and an area of 1,478 km².

Isiolo District was an administrative district in Eastern Province of Kenya, with its capital at Isiolo town.

Homa Bay District was an administrative district in the Nyanza Province of Kenya. Its capital town is Homa Bay. The district had a population of 288,540 and an area of 1,160 km². The district itself was carved out of the South Nyanza District formerly known as South Kavirondo District. In 2013, the district's boundaries before 1992 were used in the creation of the devolved Homa Bay County.

Busia District was an administrative district in the Western Province of Kenya. It bordered Kakamega District to the east, Bungoma District and Teso district to the north, Busia District, Uganda to the west, and Lake Victoria to the south.

Machakos District was an administrative district in the Eastern Province of Kenya. Its capital was Machakos. The district had an area of 20,402 km2.

The Kibwezi–Kitui–Kandwia–Usueni Road, also B7 Road (Kenya) is a road in Kenya, the largest economy in the East African Community. The road connects the town of Kibwezi in Makueni County to the community of Usueni in Kitui County. Since its upgrading, the road has opened up many villages and rural-urban settings to business and agricultural activities.
