Klaus Scharioth (born October 8, 1946) is a former German diplomat. From 2006 to 2011 he served as Germany's ambassador to the United States. Since 2011 he has been dean of the Mercator Fellowship on International Affairs. [1] He is also a Professor of Practice at the Fletcher School at Tufts University [2] and a commentator on relations between Germany and the United States. [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
Scharioth was born in Essen, located in the Ruhr Area in western Germany. He studied law in Bonn, Freiburg and Geneva and political science, sociology and psychology at The College of Idaho in Caldwell, Idaho. He is also a graduate of the Fletcher School, where he studied international relations, international law and international economics and received an MA, an MALD and his PhD. He is married with three children.
His first posts were in Quito, Ecuador (1979–1982) and at West Germany's Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York City (1986–1990). In the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs itself, he has served in the Asia, press and State Secretary's offices (1977–79), in the policy planning staff (1982–1986), and in the international law division (1990–1993).
Scharioth was Director of the Private Office to the NATO Secretaries General Manfred Woerner, Willy Claes and Javier Solana in Brussels, Belgium, from 1993 to 1996. In the Foreign Ministry he thereafter held posts as Head of the Defense and Security Policy Division (1996–1997), and as Head of the International Security and North America Directorate (1998–1999). Klaus Scharioth was appointed Head of the Office of Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel in 1998. Under Joschka Fischer Scharioth became Political Director (1999–2002) before serving as State Secretary of the German Foreign Office from 2002 to 2006.
Scharioth presented his ambassadorial credentials to George W. Bush on March 13, 2006. In August 2011 he was succeeded by Peter Ammon.
Scharioth has received honorary doctoral degrees from the College of Idaho, [10] Chatham University and Old Dominion University. [11] He has received Estonia's Order of the Cross of Terra Mariana (Class II) [12] and the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany. [13]
Horst Köhler is a German politician who served as President of Germany from 2004 to 2010. As the candidate of the two Christian Democratic sister parties, the CDU and the CSU, as well as the liberal FDP, Köhler was elected to his first five-year term by the Federal Convention on 23 May 2004 and was subsequently inaugurated on 1 July 2004. He was reelected to a second term on 23 May 2009. Just a year later, on 31 May 2010, he resigned from his office in a controversy over a comment on the role of the German Bundeswehr in light of a visit to the troops in Afghanistan. During his tenure as president, whose office is mostly concerned with ceremonial matters, Köhler was a highly popular politician, with approval rates above those of both Chancellor Gerhard Schröder and later Chancellor Angela Merkel.

He served as Dean of The Fletcher School at Tufts University and served as United States Special Representative for North Korea Policy from March 2009 to October 2011. He served three times as a U.S. Ambassador, to Tunisia (1979–1981), to the Philippines (1984–1987), and to South Korea (1997–2001). In 1987, he received the American Academy of Diplomacy's Diplomat of the Year Award.
Miroslav Lajčák is a Slovak politician and diplomat, former Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Slovak Republic. In addition, Lajčak also served as President of the United Nations General Assembly for the 72nd session from 2017 until 2018.
Phyllis Elliott Oakley is a diplomat who served as U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Population, Refugees, and Migration (1994–97) and Assistant Secretary of State for Intelligence and Research (1997–99). She was married to former Ambassador Robert B. Oakley and is a member of the American Academy of Diplomacy and the Council on Foreign Relations. Oakley is a graduate of The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, at Tufts University.
Angela Kane is a German diplomat and was formerly the UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and Under-Secretary-General for Management in the United Nations.
Farah Pandith is an American academic. She was appointed the first-ever Special Representative to Muslim Communities in June 2009 by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The position was made specifically for her after she briefed Secretary Clinton about her work in the Bush Administration. She had the rare distinction of being a political appointee for two Republican presidents and President Obama. When she was the Special Representative she traveled to almost 100 countries. After serving under both Secretaries Clinton and John Kerry, she left government. She said she came to Washington after 9/11 again and wanted to serve – she left after more than a decade in public service. She worked at USAID and then went to the National Security Council and then the U.S. Department of State. When she left in 2014, she returned to her home state of Massachusetts.
Carlos Pascual is a Cuban-American diplomat and the former U.S. Ambassador to Mexico and Ukraine. He served at the U.S. Agency for international Development from 1983 to 1995, and at the White House National Security Council from 1995 to 2000, ultimately as senior director for Russia, Ukraine and Eurasia. He was the State Department Coordinator for U.S. Assistance to Europe and Eurasia, and subsequently the Coordinator for Reconstruction and Stabilization from 2003 to 2005. Later he served at the Brookings institution and was appointed Special Envoy and Coordinator for International Energy Affairs at the State Department's Bureau of Energy from 2011 to 2014.

The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy is the graduate school of international affairs of Tufts University, in Medford, Massachusetts. The School is one of America's oldest graduate schools of international relations and is well-ranked in its masters and doctoral programs. As of 2017, the student body numbered around 230, of whom 36 percent were international students from 70 countries, and around a quarter were U.S. minorities.
