Knutsen NYK Offshore Tankers (KNOT) is the second largest shuttle tanker operator in the world. KNOT is a joint venture between Norwegian-based Knutsen OAS Shipping and Japanese-based Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK), and was set up in 2010 following NYK's acquisition of 50 per cent of the shuttle tanker fleet from Knutsen OAS Shipping. The two companies have a separate joint venture regarding liquefied CO2. [1]

Today KNOT has a fleet of 25 advanced shuttle tankers, 3 new buildings, and one Floating Storage and Offloading Unit (FSO). It operates in numerous places, including the North Sea and Brazil. [2]

A subsidiary, KNOT Offshore Partners LP (KNOP), a master limited partnership, was listed on the New York Stock Exchange in April 2013. KNOP several shuttle tankers in the fleet. [3] It also has the option to acquire all of KNOT's new shuttle tankers.

In 2009 the company had an onshore staff of 64 to handle projects and operation of the fleet, 430 administrative employees offshore and about 800 foreign employees.


A double acting ship is a type of icebreaking ship designed to travel forwards in open water and thin ice, but turn around and proceed astern (backwards) in heavy ice conditions. In this way, the ship can operate independently in severe ice conditions without icebreaker assistance but retain better open water performance than traditional icebreaking vessels.

J. Lauritzen(JL) is a Danish shipping company with worldwide operations headquartered in Hellerup, Denmark. JL is a private company wholly owned by the Lauritzen Foundation, a Danish commercial foundation that is also the main shareholder (around 40%) of DFDS, one of Europe's largest ferry shipping and logistics company.

Karen Knutsen is a shuttle tanker built in 1999. It was originally named Knock Whillan flying a Liberian flag. On 15 July 2003 it was renamed Karen Knutsen and reflagged to Isle of Man on 22 December 2003. Its home port is Douglas. It is owned by Knutsen O.A.S. Shipping AS and managed by KNOT Management AS.
