Dr. Kofi Dsane-Selby (also known as Kofi Nyann Dsane-Selby, 1931 - 18 July 2017) was a former Ambassador of Ghana during the Busia and Kufour regimes. [1] [2] [3]
He hailed from Saltpond in the Central Region of Ghana. He attended Mfantsipim School and completed in 1950. [4]
He was a medical doctor by profession. [1] He was also a former President of the Ghana Medical Association. [2] He was also a former chairman for Asante Kotoko in the 1960s. [4]
He was a founding member of the New Patriotic Party. [5] He contested for the NPP's flagbearership in 1992 and also in 1996 during the party's primaries. [6] [7]
He was the Ambassador of Ghana to France from 1970 to 1972. [8]
He was married to Rosamond Dsane-Selby and they had eight children. [2] [9] His father was Ekow Nyanka Selby and his mother was Madam Lydia Okan Kai Dsane. [3] [10] He was a Freemason and a Methodist. [4]
In 2008,he received the Order of the Star –Companion Award due to his contribution to Ghana's politics,public service and healthcare. [2]
Selby died on 18 July 2017 at Korle Bu Teaching Hospital in Accra. [1] On 10 September 2017,he was buried in Cape Coast. [11] [12]
John Kofi Agyekum Kufuor is a Ghanaian politician who served as President of Ghana from 7 January 2001 to 7 January 2009. He was a Chairperson of the African Union from 2007 to 2008 and his victory over John Evans Atta Mills at the end of Jerry Rawlings' second term marked the first transition of power in Ghana from a democratic party to another democratic party. Kufuor's career has been spent on the liberal-democratic side of Ghanaian politics,in the parties descended from the United Gold Coast Convention and the United Party. As a lawyer and businessman,he was a minister in Kofi Abrefa Busia's Progress Party government during Ghana's Second Republic,and a Popular Front Party opposition frontbencher during the Third Republic. In the Fourth Republic,Kufuor stood as the New Patriotic Party's candidate at the 1996 election,and then led it to victory in 2000 and 2004. Having served two terms in power,he retired from politics in 2008. He is popularly known as the Gentle Giant.
