Koilkuntla is a town in Kurnool district of the Indian state of Andhra Pradesh. It is located in Koilkuntla mandal. [1]

Geography

Koilkuntla is located at 15°14′00″N78°19′00″E / 15.2334°N 78.3167°E / 15.2334; 78.3167 . [2] It has an average elevation of 185 meters (610 feet). 85 km south of Kurnool town. There is a famous temple called Panduranga Swamy Temple which is established by king Penukonda Rajullu in 1560-1570.It has pond in front of the temple. The lady named Koilla guided the king to build the temple and due to the pond in front of the temple, the town was named as Koilkuntla. There is a confluence of Kundu river and Juleru river near Sagameswara temple in east side and in west side mosque. And in the centre of Koilkuntla, the south side is having Sidheswara temple and in north side mosque. That is why they are called as union of two religions of Hindu and Muslim. In 1847 Narasimha Reddy fought against the British and he was hanged to death by the British emperor near taluka office in Koilkuntla. In 1870 Buda Vengal Reddy helped poor people in native of uyallavada thalluka Koilkuntla, so, Queen Victoria gave swarna Kanakam to him. This happened in the year 1850–1870.

The Kundu River is a tributary of the Penna River in the Rayalaseema region of Andhra Pradesh, India. Originating as a spring near the village of Uppalapadu in Orvakal Mandal of Kurnool District, it goes through many changes before merging with the Penna at Adinimmaya Palli village of Kadapa District. It is known for frequent floods that bring heavy damage to the Nandyal and Koilkuntla areas, and hence it is popularly called the "Sorrow of Nandyal." But nowadays Nandyal town became a big town with huge population so that the drainage water is discharged to the Kundu river without prior treatment. Industrialists focused their vision at more and more profits and they polluted the river to the maximum extent. The villagers who are living at down flow of the river from Nandyala are suffering with different skin diseases. The pollution impacts even animals health too. In ancient times this river was known as the Kumudvathi. There is a saying in Rayalaseema that whoever drinks the water of the Kundu will gain enormous courage to face enemies. The valley of the Kundu is known as Renadu and is symbolic of the term "Renati Pourusham."
