Kokborok Sahitya Sabha (KBSS) was formed on 8 October 1972, under the leadership of Alindralal Tripura. Since then, it has been working on the development of Kokborok, a Tibeto-Burman language of Tripura (Twipra). KBSS has its offices in Agartala, the state capital.
The current President of the organization is the writer and performer Nanda Kumar Deb Barma.[ citation needed ]
Kokborok (or Tripuri) is a Tibeto-Burman language of the Indian state of Tripura and neighbouring areas of Bangladesh. Its name comes from kok meaning "verbal" and borok meaning "people" or "human", It is one of the ancient languages of Northeast India.

Kokborok Day is a festival celebrated in the Indian state of Tripura to celebrate the development of the Kokborok language. It is observed on 19 January every year. The Kokborok language is an official language in Tripura. This day is chosen to commemorate its initial recognition as an official language in 1979. The activities include cultural programmes and literary activities.

Sudhanwa Debbarma was an Indian Kokborok writer, Political leader and member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist). He was the former Speaker of Tripura Legislative Assembly. He was the veteran leader of Ganamukti Parishad. He was a member of Tripura Legislative Assembly from Takarjala (1977-1988).
Nanda Kumar Deb Barma is a Tipra playwright, poet, and lyricist from Tripura. He is known for literature in Kokborok language and Kokborok Drama. Nanda Kumar Deb Barma is author of novels such as Rung (2001), and compilations of works such as Thungnuk Bwchap (2015). He has been one of the active advocates for Kokborok development of literature and education and is the president of Kokborok Sahitya Sabha.
The Meitei language, also known as the Manipuri language, is one of the seven officially declared minority languages, besides Kokborok and Bengali, recognised by the Government of Tripura. Its promotion and development are done by the Directorate of Kokborok & Other Minority Languages, established in August 2012.
