The Kortenbach & Rauh Kora 1 was an unusual twin boom, pusher configuration motor glider, designed and built in Germany in the 1970s and intended as a training aircraft.

Design and development

The Kora was a two-seat side by side motorglider, intended as a trainer. Its long span, high aspect ratio wing gave it a respectable gliding performance. The overall layout was unusual, with a central pod fuselage in front of a pusher configuration engine and with its empennage on twin tail booms. It had a powered aircraft style tricycle undercarriage. [1]

The Kora was an all-wood aircraft and its constructors, Kortenbach & Rauh, were best known as furniture makers. It had a cantilever high wing with a constant chord centre section and tapered outer panels. Schempp-Hirth airbrakes opened over the upper, inner wing surfaces from mid-chord. The central pod was broad, housing a cockpit 1,200 mm (47 in) wide under a starboard-side opening, two piece canopy which reached from the wing leading edge almost to the nose. Instructor and pupil sat side-by-side, with the 48 kW (64 hp) Limbach SL 1700EC1 air cooled flat four piston engine behind them, where the wing became broader to allow propeller clearance. [1] [2]

Two slender, tapering booms ran rearwards from the wing, each ending at a straight edged fin which tapered both above and below it. A tapered, straight edged tailplane was carried on top of the fins, projecting outwards. The rudders and one piece elevator were rectangular. [1]

Two prototypes were built, the first flying ion 13 September 1973. This had a fully retracting tricycle undercarriage with mainwheels retracting rearwards into the tail booms and the nosewheel rearwards into the fuselage pod. The second prototype, which flew in 1976, retained the retractable nosewheel but had fixed, spatted mainwheels on thin, cantilever, spring steel legs mounted on the lower fuselage to save weight and reduce complexity. [1] The extra drag reduced the glide angle from 31.4 to 30 and increased the minimum sink rate from 0.76 m/s (150 ft/min) to 0.85 m/s (167 ft/min). [2] [3]

The second prototype was still undergoing flight tests early in 1978, when no decision on production had been reached despite orders for some twelve aircraft. [1] It remained on the German civil aircraft register in 2010. [4]

The TeST TST-13 Junior is a single-seat touring motor glider with a nose-mounted engine, built by TeST in Czech Republic. It is an all composite design which succeeded the TeST TST-9 Junior motor glider in production, incorporating some features of the TeST TST-10 Atlas sailplane, including its wing.

The Alpaero Exel is a French single seat, single engine pusher pod-and-boom kit-built ultralight motor glider. About 10 had been produced by 2005.

The LIBIS-17 was a two-seat sailplane for advanced glider training. It was built in Yugoslavia (Slovenia) in the early 1960s and achieved production.

The Akaflieg Darmstadt D-39 was a single-seat motor glider derived from the D-38 sailplane. Built in Germany in the late 1970s, it was not intended for production and only one was constructed.

The Aérostructure Lutin 80, earlier known as the PLM 80, is a small, single seat motor glider with a low power pusher configuration engine, designed and built in France in the 1980s. Only two were completed.

The Akaflieg Stuttgart fs28, nicknamed Avispa is a single engine, twin boom pusher configuration light sports and utility aircraft designed at the University of Stuttgart in West Germany in the 1970s. Unusually, it has an inverted V-tail. The sole example remained active as of 2010.

The Farner HF Colibri 1 SL was an unusual canard motor glider with a unique control system, designed and built in Switzerland in the late 1970s. Only one was constructed; much modified during the 1980s, it was still flying in 1990.

The Blessing Rebell was a one/two seat motorglider designed for amateur construction in Germany. Only one was built, flying for the first time in 1973 in a pusher configuration. It was later modified and flew in 1980 as a tractor aircraft.

The VFW-Fokker FK-3 is a single seat competition glider, built in Germany in the late 1960s. It had success at the Italian and Austrian national contests of 1968, resulting in a short production run the following year.

The IIL IS-8 was a two-seat sailplane designed by Iosif Șilimon and built in Romania in 1960. They served with Romanian gliding clubs.

The IIL IS-9 was a low powered, experimental pod and boom style motor glider, designed and built in Romania in the late 1950s.

The IIL IS-10 was a high-performance, single-seat glider, designed and built in Romania in the early 1960s. It was the first Romanian aircraft to use laminar flow airfoils.

Rotorvox C2A

The Rotorvox C2A is a two-seat, pusher configuration autogyro developed in Germany.

Politechnika Warszawska PW-4 Pelikan

The Politechnika Warszawska PW-4 Pelikan was a motor-glider variant of the two seat Polish PW-3 Bakcyl glider. Only one flew.
